The Federal Trade Commission is announcing a finalized rule to make it easier for people to cancel subscriptions and memberships they just don’t want anymore. When the proposed rule was announced last year, Khan said, the agency got about 16,000 comments expressing how canceling subscriptions had become a headache at best. Khan and the FTC have already taken legal action against Amazon’s Prime division over accusations that it is luring customers into subscriptions that the FTC alleges are extraordinarily difficult to cancel. “Some members have the ability to cancel their membership online based on their membership type and location of their home club,” it said. Nelson said she’d be grateful for the changes Khan and the FTC are proposing.

The US and Canada drive 70% of Netflix's revenue growth and are crucial for its future ad expansion. AdvertisementBy now, it's become a common refrain in Hollywood: Netflix has won the streaming wars. Amazon threw a wrench into Netflix's advertising ambitions by steamrolling into the market earlier this year. With subscriber growth potential limited in the US because Netflix is already quite saturated in the market, Netflix needs to ramp up ad revenue. While Netflix's ad tier growth is steadily adding inventory, those tech deals will take a couple of years to ramp up.

Unrivaled, the new and upcoming pro women's basketball league, signed an exclusive, multiyear media rights deal to air its games on TNT and truTV, as well as streaming platform Max. The heightened interest in the WNBA led to the league's most recent media rights deal being valued at $2.2 billion for 11 seasons, CNBC previously reported. The WNBA's media rights deal is negotiated as part of the NBA's agreement. The media rights deal with Unrivaled gives Turner Sports the opportunity to keep basketball on its air if it is not successful in its lawsuit. Star broadcaster and NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley recently said he wouldn't leave TNT Sports even if the company doesn't have NBA media rights in the future.

One of the National Football League's toughest competitions doesn't take place anywhere near a football field. For the seventh year in a row, data scientists and analytics buffs will be invited to test their mettle against each other in the league's Big Data Bowl, powered by Amazon Web Services. The competition's goal is to distill the copious amounts of data collected from every player during every NFL game into stats and insights that the league and its teams can learn from. The Big Data Bowl was first introduced by the NFL in 2018 and quickly became a fertile proving ground for teams to find bright minds to add to their front offices. This year's competition challenges participants to use data collected before the ball is snapped to help predict what an offense or defense is going to do during a given play.
