A Lufthansa Airbus A350 diverted to Luanda, Angola, after suffering an engine issue on Saturday. Passengers were stuck on the plane for hours after landing, and their passports were confiscated. Lufthansa told Insider it sent a team of technicians to inspect the aircraft. The airline told Insider the passengers were given a hotel room, where they "were looked after around the clock by Lufthansa staff." However, NTV reported some passengers were offered flights for days or even weeks later, but Lufthansa told Insider that all passengers will have left by Monday — three days after the diversion to Luanda.

The death of a pilot who fell out of a twin-engine plane in North Carolina in July was an accident, according to his autopsy report. The autopsy said the plane then encountered turbulence and Crooks told the pilot he was not feeling well. Crooks declared an emergency and coordinated with air traffic controllers at Raleigh-Durham International Airport, according to the report. After Crooks fell from the plane, the commanding pilot alerted air traffic controllers and went searching for Crooks, the report says. I think he got that when he was a sophomore,” Crooks told the station.

The National Weather Service confirmed that tornadoes hit the ground in Mississippi on Tuesday evening and Alabama was in the forecast path of the storms during the overnight hours. The national Storm Prediction Center said in its storm outlook that affected cities could include New Orleans; Memphis and Nashville in Tennessee; and Birmingham, Alabama. Additional reports of property damage near Columbus were received by the Weather Service, according to Lance Perrilloux, a forecaster with the agency. Travel analyst Henry Harteveldt applauded airlines for their on-time performance over the Thanksgiving holiday. Before the pandemic reshaped the aviation industry as we know it, Thanksgiving was the US' busiest holiday for air travel. United Airlines told Insider that it flew more than 476,000 customers on Sunday, and the Thanksgiving holiday period was the carrier's third-busiest behind 2018 and 2019. Although the historically unreliable holiday flight operations may have scared people away from flying over Thanksgiving, Harteveldt told Insider the successful week is a win for US carriers. "They have to continue to operate reliably during the next few weeks, during the Christmas and New Year's period, and throughout 2023 and beyond," Harteveldt told Insider.

New York (CNN Business) Sunday marked the busiest day at US airports since the start of the pandemic — and though bad weather caused widespread flight delays, relatively few flights were canceled outright. About 2.6 million people were screened at Transportation Security Administration checkpoints Sunday. Unfortunately for passengers, once they made it through the TSA checkpoints they found widespread delays mostly related to weather. US airlines had 6,600 delayed arrivals on Sunday, according to tracking service FlightAware — about 26% of scheduled flights — with the average delay at about 51 minutes. Still, only 178 flights by US airlines were canceled altogether on Sunday, representing less than 1% of scheduled flights.

The Air Line Pilots Association, the union which represents Envoy's pilots, didn't comment. Envoy Air Flight 3556, an Embraer E175, flying for parent company American Airlines ' American Eagle returned to Chicago O'Hare International Airport at 7:57 p.m. local time, 37 minutes after departing for Columbus, Ohio, according to FlightRadar24. "We're going to need paramedics," said the person on the recording, who seemed to be another pilot on the flight.

Spirit Airlines has temporarily cut 37 routes from its network starting in January. The airline is calling the cuts temporary, with plans to restore many of them in 2023. Starting in January, the low-cost carrier will nix 37 routes from its map, including destinations in the US and abroad, according to Cirium data. Although Spirit is pulling some routes from Florida, Spirit EVP and CCO Matthew Klein said in the earnings call that "while we are seeing the constraints on our Florida network, we are able to reallocate that to other parts of the country." The vintage aircraft in Saturday's deadly collision at a Dallas air show, as expected, lacked flight data recorders, making social media crucial to the investigation, a federal official indicated Sunday. Kennedy International and Newark Liberty International. The decision allows JetBlue to hold on to valuable flight rights at some of the most congested U.S. airports. JetBlue sought the waiver in July, saying its "workforce and flight operations are under extraordinary strain, leaving little margin for operational challenges caused by airport construction, (air traffic control) delays and weather," the FAA said. The relief, which runs retroactively through Oct. 29, will allow JetBlue to hold on to some slots, which are takeoff and landing authorizations. Delta had asked the FAA to waive minimum slot requirements because of issues including New York airport construction, significant crew sick time, severe weather and air traffic control delays and cancellations.

Over-water routes require airlines to carry enough life rafts to accommodate all occupants of the airplane in the event of a loss of one raft of the largest rated capacity. Florida is a major part of U.S. air traffic and for some airlines, like JetBlue Airways (JBLU.O) and Southwest Airlines (LUV.N), 40% or more of daily flights typically touch a Florida airport. Airlines and Buttigieg clashed for months over summer woes that led to tens of thousands of flight disruptions and prompted the department to pressure airlines to do more to boost service to passengers. U.S. banks and financial institutions processed roughly $1.2 billion in likely ransomware payments in 2021, a new record and almost triple the amount in 2020, according to a federal financial crimes watchdog. The report reflects a sweeping government effort to identify and report ransomware attacks following the hacking of U.S.-based Colonial Pipeline's IT network in May 2021. FinCEN said there were 1,489 ransomware incidents costing nearly $1.2 billion last year, a substantial rise from $416 million in damages recorded in 2020, according to the report. The agency said four of the overall top five ransomware attacks reported during this period are tied to Russia. In March, Biden signed a measure requiring some businesses to report certain cyber incidents and ransomware payments to the Cybersecurity, Infrastructure and Security Agency.
