The growing reliance on 401(k) plans as a source of urgent cash is further evidence of consumer financial stress heading into the 2024 election year. Despite high GDP and low unemployment, some Americans are clearly facing a cash crunch and struggling to pay the bills. Bank of America said the number of 401(k) participants taking hardship distributions increased by 27% from the first quarter of this year. Bank of America found 401(k) contribution rates were steady during the third quarter at 6.5%. Just under 3% of those age groups are cutting back on their retirement savings.

The S&P 500 looks on track to have the strongest earnings season since the third quarter of 2021. Earnings are telling markets four things about the state of the economy, Bank of America says. Bank of America in a note on Monday pointed to so-far resilient earnings season, despite earlier concerns on Wall Street over a sustained slowdown in corporate profits. Meanwhile, revenue per worker in the S&P 500 is approaching its highest level since 2008, despite sales slowing down. Investors, though, are still waiting on the rest of S&P 500 firms to report their financials over the next few weeks.

The margins were between 4 and 10 percentage points, with a survey sampling error of between 4.4 and 4.8 points per state. The only state where voters said they would choose Biden over Trump was Wisconsin, where the president led the Republican front-runner by 2 points, within the margin of error. During the 2020 election, Biden won all six of these battleground states, albeit some by very slim margins. These issues will be top of mind for voters next year; 57% of respondents said economic issues would be the most important factor in their vote. The survey points to troubling signs ahead for the Biden reelection campaign.

Market-churning economic news is lacking this week, but that doesn’t mean Wall Street and the economy can rest easy. The political news heats up, with Donald Trump set to testify in his civil fraud trial in New York. And elections take place across the country on Tuesday that could show where the country stands politically one year out from the 2024 election. Meanwhile, a softer-than-expected jobs report on Friday had some analysts saying the economy was headed for a downturn. “The unemployment rate rose just a tenth to 3.9% in October versus September which the BLS called little changed,” he said.

“The legal cases have increasingly become a big part of the campaign strategy,” a Trump campaign adviser told CNN. The line between Trump’s political campaign and his legal operation gets blurrier by the day. But those plans are reliant on trial schedules that are out of their hands, forcing Trump’s campaign team to respond to potential summons with little lead time. ‘Cross that bridge when we get there’Trump is surrounded by what is widely viewed as his most disciplined political campaign team to date. Trump’s legal peril is a necessary issue that has to be dealt with in the eyes of many of his advisers.
