A self-proclaimed hardware hacker modded his AirPods Max to have a USB-C charging port. It's rumored that Apple's next generation of the headphones will ditch the Lightning port for USB-C. AdvertisementOne engineer is giving AirPods Max owners one less reason to upgrade to the new model that Apple is expected to eventually announce — if they're the DIY type. But Pillonel wasn't willing to wait, dubbing his modified headphones the "World's First USB-C AirPods Max" in his video description. While it then added the port to many of its devices, including iPads and accessories, the MacBook has used a USB-C port for years.

Apple appears to be tapping out as car companies scramble to adjust EV plans. AdvertisementThe Apple car is dead (apparently). Apple reportedly cancels plans to build a car

Apple will wind down its team working on electric cars, called Special Projects Group, according to Bloomberg. The news signals that Apple will cease its secretive effort to build a car to rival Tesla . The program employed thousands of employees but never fit with Apple's core business of electronics and online services, and raised questions about what companies Apple would tap to manufacture a car. Reports of Apple's ambition to build a car first surfaced in 2014 after the company recruited automotive engineers and other talent from car companies. Some Apple employees in the company's car division may move to a generative artificial intelligence team, according to Bloomberg.

CNN —Netflix wants its customers to stop paying for its streaming subscription through Apple’s App Store. Members billed through Apple may soon be prompted to change their payment plan, a new addition to Netflix’s help site reads. Netflix stopped accepting Apple payments for new and rejoining customers in 2018, but Netflix’s policy change means existing customers who had been grandfathered into paying through Apple will now have to make the switch. Previously, Apple had prohibited many iOS apps from skirting the 30% charge by accepting payments outside of Apple’s proprietary payment system. Apple’s in-app purchase fees have been the subject of ire from app developers for years.

Get ready for a more volatile Dow with the Amazon addition
  + stars: | 2024-02-26 | by ( Robert Hum | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
Will a more volatile Dow Jones Industrial average follow suit after Amazon's addition? Amazon joins the Dow Monday, as the 127-year old index adds a much higher-beta stock that could bring some bigger moves with more frequency going forward. Remember, that for every $1 any Dow stock moves, the index moves roughly 6.5 points. But contrast Amazon's moves to even Walmart, which had essentially the same share price pre-split as Amazon (WMT $175.56, AMZN $174.99). Apple had a share price of about $127 when it was added in March 2015 (price based on pre-2020 4-for-1 split levels).

The company has discussed making a smart ring, though it's not actively working on the product, Bloomberg reported. It's also exploring whether it should make smart glasses and put tiny cameras onto AirPods that could bring AI benefits, the report said. Apple has issued a number of patents for smart glasses and smart rings in the past dating back at least 10 years. Apple has also had early discussions about creating smart glasses as a possible alternative to AirPods, the report said. A smart ring would also be a competitor for Oura, and newcomer Samsung's upcoming Galaxy smart ring that it plans to release later this year, which is designed to keep track of health metrics.

It was a good run, but the era of the Magnificent Seven is over for the stock market. "I don't see these seven names rising together," said the analyst who coined the nickname for the group. AdvertisementThe Magnificent Seven are looking a little less magnificent, and aren't really even a band of seven anymore. In a note titled "R.I.P the Magnificent Seven Era," Mike O'Rourke, chief market strategist from Jones Trading, said the group's dominance over the stock market is coming to a close. Back in April 2023, when O'Rourke invented the moniker (although some say it was BofA's Michael Hartnett who coined the term), the Magnificent Seven contributed to a stunning 88% of year-to-date gains.

A centerpiece of that plan is “MLS Season Pass,” a sleekly designed streaming package that ditches the fragmentation other sports suffer from and lets fans stream globally every game — without blackouts — in the Apple TV app. The package costs $14.99 per month or $99 for the season and slightly less ($12.99 per month or $79 for the year) for existing Apple TV+ subscribers. “Once people tuned into the product, they were watching longer than our linear versions in past years,” Camilo Durana, executive vice president of MLS’ Apple partnership, properties and events, told CNN. On Wednesday, Apple released a new Sports app that shows live MLS scores and pushes people to watch them on “MLS Season Pass” on the Apple TV app. That matches a third-party report from analytics firm Antenna showing that “MLS Season Pass” was getting 6,000 new signups a day before Messi arrived but soared to 110,000 signups a day after he signed.

Apple Music is turning up the heat in its competition with music streaming rival Spotify. Apple Music Replay, which provides a summary of users' listening habits, is now available monthly — offering more frequent summaries compared to the yearly Spotify Wrapped. Apple says you'll need to go to a website, replay.music.apple.com, and log in with your Apple ID to access your monthly stats. But note that if you haven't listened to "enough music," you won't be able to see your Replay, Apple says. Apple Music Replay has previously been available at the conclusion of a calendar year, and is available in the app itself.

Apple releases free new sports app for iPhone
  + stars: | 2024-02-21 | by ( Kif Leswing | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +5 min
The app, called Apple Sports, does one thing well: show sports scores from all the major teams and leagues. Apple services chief Eddy Cue said the company designed the app to be fast and simple for multiple quick checks per day. This new app, which won't come pre-installed on iPhones, is tightly integrated with Apple's other Services apps, such as the TV app and News app. It works for sports Apple carries, as well as games on streaming services that are connected to the Apple TV app, many of which still require a cable subscription but will increasingly be available from over-the-top streamers. Apple will also have features that will allow users to follow college basketball's March Madness tournament in the app, Cue said.

The company on Wednesday launched Apple Sports, a free app for the iPhone that delivers real-time scores, key statistics, and live betting odds. At launch, users will have access to live data from the NBA, NHL, and MLS, among other leagues. On Wednesday, Apple will launch a new app. Apple has in recent years struck deals with various sports leagues, such as the MLB and MLS, to stream games on its Apple TV+ streaming service. While Apple Sports can alert users to where a game is being broadcast, it will not stream games directly inside the app, instead pointing users to the correct app to watch the action.

Just consider three core holdings in the portfolio: Apple , Starbucks , and Nvidia . Nvidia generates 21% of its overall revenue from Mainland China, while Apple gets 19%, and Starbucks 9%. Xiamen-based Luckin Coffee, for example, overtook Starbucks in market share in China during 2023, with double the retail locations there. However, Nvidia still dominates the AI chip market in China, and it's difficult to see its rivals catching up anytime soon. The company has twice re-engineered chips for the Chinese market to comply with U.S. rules.

Michael M. Santiago | Getty ImagesThe so-called "Magnificent 7" now wields greater financial might than almost every other major country in the world, according to new Deutsche Bank research. The meteoric rise in the profits and market capitalizations of the Magnificent 7 U.S. tech behemoths — Apple , Amazon , Alphabet , Meta , Microsoft , Nvidia and Tesla — outstrip those of all listed companies in almost every G20 country, the bank said in a research note Tuesday. Of the non-U.S. G20 countries, only China and Japan (and the latter, only just) have greater profits when their listed companies are combined. Deutsche Bank analysts highlighted that the Magnificent 7's combined market cap alone would make it the second-largest country stock exchange in the world, double that of Japan in fourth. However, this level of concentration has led some analysts to voice concerns over related risks in the U.S. and global stock market.
