Tracy Chapman continues to make history with her 1988 hit “Fast Car” after winning song of the year at Wednesday’s Country Music Awards. Thank you to the CMAs and a special thanks to Luke (Combs) and to all of the fans of ‘Fast Car,’” Evans said on behalf of Chapman. The CMA win is a remarkable achievement given “Fast Car” debuted 35 years ago, and saw a resurgence in popularity in July after country star Luke Combs released a cover of the hit single. Combs’ cover went on to reach No. Chapman, who is the sole writer of “Fast Car,” also reached No.

At Paul Taylor, a Drum Circle and a Fierce Sisterhood

It’s easy to imagine what Keigwin was after: introducing the noise-making excitation of a percussive score and flaunting its liveness. For a better use of a percussive score, Taylor audiences can look this season to Ulysses Dove’s “Vespers,” which the company debuted on Saturday. It begins with a woman sitting on a cafe chair, and the way that Jada Pearman sits up straight speaks volumes. The six Taylor women — especially Pearman and Madelyn Ho, who are having breakthrough seasons — become one fierce sisterhood. Where “Vespers” shows how a percussive score can be effectively channeled, Lauren Lovette’s new “Echo” shows how sharing focus with live musicians can work.

Newer entrants like "Girl math" and "Girl dinner" have joined those that have been around for years, like "Girlboss." But, the snail girl trend has gotten pushback online — with many people commenting that they're over all the "girl" trends. The girl math hashtag has more than one billion views and tons of videos of young women explaining how they use girl math to feel better about their finances. "The online trends are kind of like an inside joke and an abbreviation for much larger context," Lintz told Insider. Snail girl: Snail girls are the antithesis of girlbosses.

The job market or spending? The spending argument: But there have been instances in which spending weakened before the job market. “I think it starts with the perception of the labor market,” Drew Matus, chief market strategist at MetLife Investment Management, told CNN. The ticket-industry giant said it has sold a record 140 million tickets so far this year, up 17% year-over-year and has already surpassed the 121 million tickets sold in all of 2022. In the third quarter, Ticketmaster sales surged 57% to $833 million and 90 million fee-bearing tickets were sold in the period.

Nicolas Cage is not afraid to go big. “It’s not going to be the same old, same old.”But at some point, that bigness is exactly what audiences came to predict from him. Cage could sense that shift but felt powerless to stop it: How should a star react when the public’s changing perception starts to turn like a tidal wave? Cage sent up his persona by playing a heightened version of himself in last year’s “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” but found even more to mine in “Dream Scenario,” which has its limited release next Friday. Still, once those collective dreams become nightmares, the hapless professor is helpless against the public backlash.

“Luke,” the man said, “this is Coach Knight.”His voice had grown fainter, but the intimidating tenor of Bobby Knight, the former basketball coach, was still there. Epplin had sent Knight a copy of his book, “Our Team,” after learning that he was a huge fan of the Cleveland baseball team, now called the Guardians. So he tracked down Knight’s address, sent him a copy of the book and included his contact information. Epplin, who grew up in a household with strong ties to the University of Illinois, a sworn enemy of Knight’s Indiana Hoosiers, was surprised to hear from Knight. He was also slightly concerned about which way the conversation would go: Knight sounded frail, but he was known as a chair-throwing, unrepentant, volcanic personality on the basketball court.

It’s not a race, but Lauren Lovette seems to be running, not walking, to create a body of work for the Paul Taylor Dance Company. Last year, after becoming Taylor’s resident choreographer, she presented two new works; this week, as part of the Taylor season at Lincoln Center, she added two more, including the world premiere of “Echo” on Thursday. Dancers, all men, mainly bare chested, began a gliding procession toward the stage, migrating along all the pathways of the theater — the sides, the aisles. This kind of offbeat entrance isn’t exactly new to dance, but Lovette used it in a meaningful way: It was almost primal, as if the music were calling for the dance. One couldn’t exist without the other in this artistic reverberation or, as she named it, echo.

That would be the second consecutive meeting the Fed keeps rates unchanged. But that doesn’t mean the Fed is done hiking rates. Still, hawkish Fed officials — those who back a more aggressive approach to addressing inflation — believe there’s more room to raise rates. RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — After slapping their mug inside every elevator in the state, an elected North Carolina regulator will go back to being faceless. Dobson told WRAL-TV on Monday he authorized removing the photo to make space for a new sentence on the elevator safety forms that mark each inspection. Predecessor Cherie Berry — a Republican like Dobson — pioneered the elevator inspection certificate photo, likely helping her at election time for nearly two decades. It earned her the moniker “elevator lady” and “elevator queen,” spurring a social media handle parody and even a song. Dobson attributed the delays to rapid growth in North Carolina and the challenge of keeping inspector positions filled.

If there is a war of the generations, we older Americans are winning it. As evidence, I present two remarkable charts, which are my versions of charts made by the Center on the Economics and Demography of Aging at the University of California, Berkeley. The charts show a big increase since 1960 in the consumption of goods and services by people over 60, with the biggest increase among people 75 and older. The charts show average consumption per individual, not total consumption by the (growing) cohort of the old. Rightly or wrongly, Congress is choosing spending on the old over spending on the young.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — A judge removed himself from the Young Dolph murder case Friday after he was ordered to do so by a Tennessee appeals court, which questioned whether he could be impartial to a man charged with killing the rapper two years ago. Shelby County Criminal Court Judge Lee Coffee asked the court clerk to assign a new judge in the high-profile case. Johnson and Cornelius Smith have pleaded not guilty in the killing of Young Dolph, whose real name was Adolph Thornton Jr. Coffee said he made the call “in court, on the bench, with another case before the Court,” according to the appeal ruling. The appeals court reversed Coffee's denial of the recusal motion and said that a new judge should be reassigned.

Speaker Mike Johnson said on Thursday evening that his personal worldview and policy positions are dictated by the Bible, in his first extended interview since assuming the job second in line to the presidency. While Mr. Johnson played a pivotal role in former President Donald J. Trump’s efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election, Mr. Hannity did not ask him a single question about it in the lengthy broadcast. Mr. Hannity famously told Mr. Trump to stop talking about the 2020 election. “I am a Bible-believing Christian,” he told Mr. Hannity. GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — The Green Bay Packers are like a finicky old car that needs several hits to the ignition before finally making some progress. That helps explain why the Packers (2-4) carry a three-game skid into Sunday's home matchup with the Minnesota Vikings (3-4). But it’s tougher to pin down why the Packers struggle so much at the start of games. “I think guys kind of take a breath and, as the game goes on, they just feel more comfortable and start executing better,” Stenavich said. Love believes once the Packers get that “monkey off your back” by making a big play early, the first-half points might start coming in bunches.
