Ukraine's air force shot down 34 Russian drones in an overnight attack, officials said. Ukraine is now using new air defense systems from the United States and Germany. Russia has used the Shahed-136 drones in a series of destructive attacks on Ukrainian cities in the last year. In one attack, Shahed-136 drones struck two energy facilities in Odesa, leaving 1.5 million people in Ukraine without power for several days. But while Iran is increasing its supply of drones like these, Ukraine has increased its air defense capacity to better defend against them.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv needs more weaponry to combat Russian air strikes just as its allies start to look more closely at their own depleted arms stocks. "Our warriors need more means of destroying Russian missiles, [Iranian-made] 'Shaheds' and other combat drones, as well as Russian aircraft," Zelenskyy said in his nightly address. The president added that he was "grateful to everyone in the world who is already helping and is willing to ramp up assistance to our country with the means that can provide more protection against Russian terror." There are concerns that the appetite among international allies to continue supplies of weaponry is waning. Elections in Slovakia, Poland in the next week, and in the U.S. next year, could herald seismic political shifts that change how much weaponry Ukraine receives.

After a long hiatus, Wagner Group mercenaries are back on the battlefield, Ukraine's military says. These fighters appear to be some of the best within the Russian ranks, but the threat is still low without their leader, Kyiv's military says. It's been several months since Wagner mercenaries last saw combat in eastern Ukraine. They captured the city in May, but amid the bloody campaign led to tensions flared between Wagner and the regular Russian military, ultimately leading to the mutiny.

One variant that could help Kyiv is the M39 cluster missile, which has nearly 1,000 submunitions. Rice has lobbied for Washington to send cluster munitions since July 2022, and his efforts have also focused on cluster rockets and missiles. Fewer of these were produced compared to the older M39 cluster variant, military research indicates. That's what ATACMS cluster missiles will help do, he said. With longer-range M39 ATACMS missiles packed with far more explosive submunitions, this becomes even more of a deadly challenge for Moscow's army.

Thousands of Ukrainian kids, including infants, have been forcibly taken to Russia. AdvertisementAdvertisementThousands of Ukrainian children are missing, having been taken by Russian troops since the invasion began last year — and there are conflicting reports about what has happened to them. Because Russian forces have targeted Ukrainian orphanages and other vulnerable populations, the number of taken children is likely "significantly higher," according to the Yale report. An official estimate from the Ukrainian government puts the total number of forcibly displaced kids at just under 20,000. Russia operates at least 43 known facilities dedicated to providing "re-education," military training, and pro-Russia academic instruction to Ukrainian children forcibly removed from their homes, the Yale report indicated.

Lawmakers return to Washington on Tuesday with just a handful of days to avert a government shutdown and a treacherous path forward to keep the government funded as landmines crop up on all sides. It’s an extremely precarious situation, with the consequence of a shutdown looming if lawmakers can’t fund the government by midnight Saturday. House leadership is aiming to move forward on the four full-year spending bills, which are chock-full of conservative policies and face no prospects in the Senate. Even so, whether that fail safe would come in time to avert a shutdown remains to be seen. The White House has asked Congress for roughly $40 billion in funding for Ukraine, domestic disaster relief and border security.

WASHINGTON (AP) — With a government shutdown five days away, Congress is moving into crisis mode as Speaker Kevin McCarthy faces an insurgency from hard-right Republicans eager to slash spending even if it means curtailing federal services for millions of Americans. Against the mounting chaos, President Joe Biden warned the Republican conservatives off their hardline tactics, saying funding the federal government is “one of the most basic fundamental responsibilities of Congress." With five days to go before Saturday's deadline, the turmoil is unfolding as House Republicans hold their first Biden impeachment inquiry hearing this week probing the business dealings of his son, Hunter Biden. With just days remaining before a shutdown, several of the holdouts say they will never vote for any stopgap measure to fund the government as they push for Congress to engage in the full-scale debate.

The Ukrainian election is complicated by the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia. While being interviewed on "Face the Nation," Zelenska said the political aspirations of her husband, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, have not consistently garnered her personal support. "Even when he ran for the first time, I didn't fully endorse it," Zelenska told CBS correspondent Margaret Brennan. Kremlin predicts Putin's continued political successRussia's next presidential election is also set for 2024, though it remains unclear whether the country will hold formal voting proceedings. Peskov, in early August, said Russia "theoretically" doesn't need to hold presidential elections because it's "obvious" that Vladimir Putin will win "with more than 90 percent of the vote."

The Pennsylvania senator's spokesman told NBC News, "We are in the process of returning the money in envelopes stuffed with $100 bills." The first US Abrams tanks have arrived in Ukraine, bolstering its military with advanced gear. Russia propaganda made a comical claim in early 2023 to have destroyed an Abrams before any arrived. AdvertisementAdvertisementOn pro-Kremlin Telegram channels earlier this year, jubilant posts claimed the Russian military had blown up Abrams tanks in battle and boasted that they "burn like matches." This was another feature of the weapons which Russian propagandists seized on in a bid to undermine them, Reuters reported. The tanks have arrived in time to be used in Ukraine's intensifying counteroffensive, with the Ukrainian military seeking to exploit a recent breach in Russia's defensive lines in Zaporizhzhia.
