REUTERS/Michael Swensen Acquire Licensing RightsDETROIT, Sept 22 (Reuters) - The Detroit Three automakers and the union representing the companies' U.S. hourly workers on Friday entered the final hours to reach new labor agreements before the current coordinated strike expands to include more plants. Fain has said the Detroit automakers have not shared their huge profits with workers while enriching executives and investors. The automakers have proposed 20% raises over 4-1/2 years, while the UAW is seeking 40%. Unifor, which represents about 5,600 Canadian auto workers, had been threatening to go on strike at all three Ford plants in the country.

NEW YORK (AP) — The United Auto Workers' strike is getting bigger. Currently, UAW workers hired after 2007 don’t receive defined-benefit pensions. During walkouts, workers are set to receive about $500 a week in strike pay — far short of what they earn while they’re working. During a 40-day UAW strike in 2019, GM lost $3.6 billion. The UAW strike is also testing President Joe Biden’s claim that he’s the most pro-union president in U.S. history.

New York CNN —The United Auto Workers union is expanding its strike against GM and Stellantis but said that progress in negotiations with Ford means it won’t expand the number of Ford workers on the picket lines. “At noon Eastern today, all parts distributions centers at General Motors and Stellantis will be on strike,” he said. Still the announcement of progress at Ford raised hopes that the strike, at least at there, could be brought to a relatively quick end. But the UAW’s expanded strike is now targeting the parts distribution centers for GM and Stellantis. As of 10:30 am ET, Stellantis (STLA) is up 0.98%; Ford (F) is up 3.57%; and GM (GM) is up 0.7%.

People attend a UAW rally to support striking workers outside an assembly plant in Louisville, Kentucky, U.S., September 21, 2023. The UAW, which represents 46,000 GM workers, 57,000 Ford employees and 43,000 Stellantis workers, kicked off negotiations with the companies in July. Contract talks between the UAW and the Detroit automakers in past years had gone on until the strike deadline and beyond. In fiscal 2019, GM's fourth-quarter profit took a $3.6 billion hit from a 40-day UAW strike. The UAW is pushing automakers to eliminate the two-tier wage system under which new hires can earn far less than veterans.

Emily Elconin | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesUnited Auto Workers President Shawn Fain on Friday invited President Joe Biden to join the picket line as striking workers expanded their walkout to dozens more General Motors and Stellantis facilities. "We still have serious issues to work through, but we do want to recognize that Ford is showing that they're serious about reaching a deal," the UAW president said. Biden sided with the striking workers last Friday when the UAW launched its initial targeted strikes against three facilities in Michigan, Missouri and Ohio. Record profits at Ford, General Motors and Stellantis "have not been shared fairly, in my view, with the workers," Biden said during a brief address last Friday. "The reason we ask for 40% pay increases is because in the last four years alone, the CEO pay went up 40%. U.S. companies, in contrast, use grant date value of stock packages awarded to executives during the reporting year. AdvertisementAdvertisementThat's because in some years, talking about a CEO's "realized pay" can obscure exorbitant pay packages approved by company boards. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe CEOs of GM and Ford also saw their compensation packages peak in 2021, before declining slightly in 2022. However you slice the numbers, the gap between CEO pay and rank-and-file workers at all three companies is gigantic.

Headline economic issues and benefits such as hourly pay, retirement benefits, cost-of-living adjustments, wage progression and work-life balance remain central to the discussions. Here's a general overview of where the union and companies stand on key issues. Wage tiers — putting autoworkers into distinct pay ranges or classifications — is a tricky, moving target. The companies and union have defined tiers differently during past negotiations as well as during the talks this year. UAW leaders are specifically concerned with vehicle production commitments at Stellantis, which has proposed closing, selling or consolidating 18 facilities.

For the first time in its 88-year history, the UAW is on strike at all three of the Detroit companies at once. "We have a bigger point to make," Wegener said, noting the strike sends a larger message about inequality across the industry. In fact, the United Auto Workers-led strike at the Detroit 3 is shaping up to have an outsized effect on the entire automotive industry. "If the UAW does dig their heels in and does well here, it's highly likely that they will get other auto workers who are not UAW auto workers to be very interested," Ambrose Conroy, CEO of consultancy Seraph, said. Even the branding of the strike, which Fain has called the "Stand Up" strike, is a play on the UAW's highly influential 1937 sit-down strike at GM.

Hundreds of people line up outside the Kentucky Career Center, over two hours prior to its opening, to find assistance with their unemployment claims, in Frankfort, Kentucky, U.S. June 18, 2020. Though demand for labor is slowing, overall labor market conditions have remained tight despite higher interest rates. "The U.S. labor market continues to outperform expectations," said Eugenio Aleman, chief economist at Raymond James. The so-called continuing claims declined 21,000 to 1.662 million during the week ending Sept. 9, also the lowest level since January, the claims report showed. Continuing claims remain historically low, a reminder that labor market conditions are still tight.

REUTERS/Rebecca Cook/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Sept 21 (Reuters) - Americans broadly back striking workers in the auto industry and Hollywood, according to a two-day Reuters/Ipsos poll completed on Wednesday that found significant support among both Democrats and Republicans. Some 72% of self-identified Democrats said they backed the auto workers strike and 79% said they supported the Hollywood strike. The poll found that 48% of Republicans backed the auto workers strike, while 47% opposed it. Other candidates like Nikki Haley and Tim Scott have said the auto workers are asking for too much. Two-thirds said pay for CEOs and workers should go up equally -- a central talking point of the UAW strike.

Striking United Auto Workers members picket outside the Stellantis Jeep plant in Toledo, Ohio, U.S. September 19, 2023. The UAW last week launched unprecedented, simultaneous strikes at one assembly plant each of General Motors (GM.N), Ford (F.N) and Chrysler parent Stellantis (STLAM.MI). The city is home to Ford's Louisville assembly plant and its Kentucky truck plant. Ford CEO Jim Farley has previously said the Kentucky truck plant, which assembles F-Series trucks, is the company's most profitable plant globally. But union leaders say Trump's record in the White House speaks for itself. While the United Auto Workers union has withheld an endorsement in the 2024 presidential race, its leadership has repeatedly rebuffed Trump. Despite Trump's history of success in courting blue-collar workers in previous elections, union leaders say their members would do well to believe their own eyes. As president, Trump largely sat on the sidelines during a 40-day walkout at a General Motors plant in 2019. “President Trump has always been on the side of American workers,” his campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said in a statement.

Talks continued between union representatives and company management on the sixth day of a coordinated walkout, a day after Ford (F.N) averted a strike by Canadian workers. The UAW launched a strike against Ford, General Motors (GM.N) and Stellantis last week, targeting one U.S. assembly plant at each company. UAW workers also want to end a tiered wage structure that they say has created a large gap between newer and older employees, forcing some to work two jobs to make ends meet. We’re serious about this,” said Victor Holloway, 24, of Westland, Michigan, who has worked at the Ford plant in Wayne, Michigan, since 2021. U.S. President Joe Biden is wearing a red tie on Wednesday in solidarity with UAW workers, the White House said.

DETROIT, Sept 20 (Reuters) - Talks were ongoing on Wednesday between union representatives and company management in the sixth day of the United Auto Workers strike at the Detroit Three automakers, a day after Ford (F.N) averted a walkout by Canadian workers. The UAW launched a strike against Ford, General Motors (GM.N) and Chrysler parent Stellantis (STLAM.MI) last week, targeting one U.S. assembly plant at each company. The UAW's coordinated U.S. action led to about 12,700 workers going on strike last week. Ford reached a last-minute deal to avoid a walkout at its Canadian operations late on Tuesday. Unifor, which represents about 5,600 Canadian auto workers, had been threatening to go on strike at all three of Ford's plants in that country if a deal was not reached by late on Tuesday.

The nearly week-old United Auto Workers strike against Ford (F.N), General Motors (GM.N) and Stellantis (STLAM.MI) is viewed as a signal of the strength of the U.S. labor movement that has garnered national support from Americans. The UAW members from two striking plants gathered in Toledo were rolling out for the one-hour, 45-mile (72 km) drive to Wayne, Michigan, where Ford workers also walked off the job last week. In Michigan, Ohio and Missouri, the three states where workers are currently striking, models made by the Big Three dominate the leaderboard of new auto registrations. The United States is still the second-largest car market in the world, trailing only China. Union membership has fallen steadily over several decades in the United States.

Stellantis provided a glimmer of hope for a breakthrough by giving the union a new contract proposal. It was not clear whether the Stellantis offer would satisfy union President Shawn Fain, who vows to announce new strike targets on Friday unless there is “serious progress” toward agreements with GM, Stellantis and Ford. So far UAW workers are striking at just three factories — one for each company, including a GM assembly plant near St. Louis. The workers are covered under a different contract than those that UAW is negotiating with the three big automakers. If ratified, it would cover more than 5,000 workers and provide a model for similar deals at GM and Stellantis operations in Canada.

New York CNN —Looming over the United Auto Workers strike: Automakers’ continued migration to the anti-union South. Jobs at nonunion EV battery facilities pay less than the roughly $32 an hour that veteran UAW workers make. Since 1990, the South’s share of auto jobs has doubled from around 15% to 30% today, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence. Mostly nonunion EV jobs and manufacturing investments are surging in Southern states led by Republicans. The South has picked up 66% of planned EV jobs, while projects in Midwestern states such as Michigan, Indiana, Kansas and Ohio have combined for 26% of planned jobs, according to S&P Global.

Striking United Auto Workers members Laura Zielinski and Aisha Cochra hold their strike signs outside the Stellantis Jeep plant in Toledo, Ohio, U.S. September 19, 2023. The fledgling auto workers strike, if it lasts and broadens out, could be just that. A prolonged nationwide strike could put already-low inventory under heavy strain, posing "significant" upside risk to auto prices. The United Auto Workers strike against the 'Detroit Three' automakers General Motors, Ford and Stellantis entered its fifth day on Tuesday. Annual inflation has plummeted this year and by some measures now has, or is close to having, a "2" handle - the central bank's 2% goal is within sight.
