Former President Donald Trump won't have his day in court in October a Georgia judge ruled Thursday, saying the high-profile defendant could sever his case from two co-defendants who want to move more quickly. Trial for two defendants – lawyers Kenneth Chesebro and Sidney Powell – will go ahead as scheduled Oct. 23. Those two invoked their right to a speedy trial, but other defendants have not yet done so. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis argued in a filing Tuesday night to try all 19 defendants at once. Several of the defendants, including Chesebro, Powell, former Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani and former Trump White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, want to be tried separately.

The Atlanta-based airline said it plans to cap the number of entries to its Sky Clubs starting Feb. 1, 2025 for holders of the American Express Platinum Card as well as the Delta Reserve American Express Card. Those holding the Platinum Card will be allowed six visits per year, while the Delta Reserve Card holders will get 10 annual visits. Defendants have been filing a slew of motions for separate trials, faster trials, trial in a different jurisdiction or – in Trump's case – no trial at all. But the flurry of paperwork could delay the trials, aiding Trump's efforts to push off any resolution until after the 2024 elections. "The RICO conspiracy charge ensures any trial would share the same evidence and witnesses,” Willis wrote. Prosecutors in all of the cases against Trump have apparently anticipated the efforts to draw out the cases. Putting all 19 defendants on trial next month, however, is a bigger legal and logistical task – and one the judge appears skeptical could happen.

CNN —Week 1 of the new NFL season is in books and there are no shortage of talking points. This year’s influx of rookies made their first steps in the NFL over the weekend with varying success. Most notably was the serious-looking injury suffered by Aaron Rodgers on his New York Jets debut on Monday Night Football. It is the second serious injury Dobbins has suffered in his short NFL career after he tore his ACL, ruling him out of the 2021 season entirely. CNN —The special grand jury in Fulton County investigating the 2020 presidential election in Georgia recommended charges against Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and former GOP Sens. David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler of Georgia, according to the special counsel grand jury report released Friday. Graham, who appeared before the special grand jury last year after a court battle over his testimony, spoke with Georgia election officials after the 2020 election. CNN —The Fulton County special purpose grand jury investigating former President Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss in Georgia recommended charges against 39 people, the unredacted grand jury report made public Friday shows. The lengthy list of recommended charges underscores how widespread the special grand jury’s investigation was into efforts to overturn the 2020 election. The indictment also included 30 unindicted co-conspirators alleged to have taken part in the conspiracy, including some people the special grand jury recommended charges against. The special grand jury report was only a recommendation, and the district attorney decided which charges to bring to a grand jury last month before the indictment was returned. The charges against the fake electors were among the most contested in the special grand jury report.

"(There) is no justification in the Constitution for Congress to interfere with a state criminal matter," Willis wrote. Trump, 77, has been criminally charged in four cases this year, two of which were brought by U.S. Special Counsel Jack Smith. US consumers are done splurging, Fed report suggests
  + stars: | 2023-09-07 | by ( Bryan Mena | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
Washington, DC CNN —After a summer of robust consumer spending, America’s bars, hotels and restaurants say the era of post-pandemic splurging by US consumers has likely drawn to a close. “Consumer spending on tourism was stronger than expected, surging during what most contacts considered the last stage of pent-up demand for leisure travel from the pandemic era,” the report said. Consumer spending rose 0.8% in July, the strongest monthly spending gain since January. But that strength in leisure spending began to level off toward the end of August, the latest Beige Book shows. Still, leisure spending varied by region, with some reporting a noticeable slowing and others saying it is holding steady.

CNN —Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis wants to keep the identities of jurors who may be chosen to hear the Georgia 2020 election interference case secret, after grand jurors who issued the indictment against Donald Trump and his allies were doxed online, according to a new court filing. “Based on the doxing of Fulton County grand jurors and the Fulton County District Attorney, it is clearly foreseeable that trial jurors will likely be doxed should their names be made available to the public,” according to the filing. The names of the grand jurors were included on the indictment as a matter of practice for indictments in Fulton County. The Atlanta district attorney asked a judge Wednesday to keep jurors' names secret in the criminal trials of former President Donald Trump and 18 other defendants on Georgia election conspiracy charges. Fulton County DA Fani Willis in her motion also asked that courtroom cameras not show the jurors during any trial, and bar the publication of written descriptions of the people on a jury. Willis cited the exposure of the purported names of the 23 members of the grand jury that indicted Trump and his co-defendants. The DA used the term "doxing," which is making public personal information about individuals, often with the intent of causing them emotional distress or physical harm. She said that police protected the grand juror to "prevent harassment and violence against them" after conspiracy theory websites published their supposed names and home addresses.
