From San Diego to Georgia I traveled over long stretches of empty road that connected small rural communities. Christian values, love of God and country, are supposed to be an inoculation against bad things. Yet almost every per capita statistic — teen pregnancy, gun deaths, infant mortality, spousal abuse, drug use, alcoholism, poverty — shows an inherent, not extrinsic, problem in rural America. Rural residents, as Mr. Krugman points out, live on the “destruction side of the equation,” but technology alone is not to blame.

☆ More than a third of teens say they spend too much time on their phones, new study finds

Around 40% of teenagers say they have cut back on their time on social media, according to a report published Monday by the Pew Research Center. Nearly the same proportion of teens acknowledge that they spend “too much” time on their smartphones (38%) and social media (27%). However, some revealed mixed emotions, as 44% of the teens surveyed said they feel anxious when they’re without their phones. Many parents also say they are keeping tabs on their teens’ smartphone and social media use, with half of parent respondents reporting they’ve looked through their children’s phones, particularly parents of younger teens. (And in most cases, their children seem to know it: 43% of teen respondents said their parents had looked through their phones.)

But I've decided not to track my high school senior when he's out and about — even when he's behind the wheel. I'm not naïve: I know my son won't always make the correct decisions. But he will; that's life. What my son gains far outweighs what I lose by opting not to use a tracking app. I don't always need to know where he is, but he'll always know where I am should he need me.
