Opinion | Juan Gabriel, My Mother and Me

In the thick of the pandemic I moved back to El Paso, Texas, on the U.S.-Mexico border, where I’d been raised, for what I thought would be a temporary stay. I found myself being more discreet around my family in El Paso and Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, where I was born. My favorite songs to sing were those by the iconic Mexican showman Juan Gabriel. Juan Gabriel’s tender femininity was a radical quality in a Mexico entrenched in machismo and homophobia. He managed to embody his Mexican roots while also exuding queerness — two ideas that were for so long at odds in our culture.

But the new law has also provoked questions about how it will be applied, whether it can effectively protect women from sexual exploitation and whether it risks criminalizing break-ups. Audrey Dmello, director of Majlis Law, a women’s rights NGO in India, supports the new law. She argues “promise to marry” rape cases are under-reported and needed to be tackled through legislation. “Having such a law gives women validity as to what happened to them,” she told CNN. Potential concernsThe new law distinguishes “promise to marry” cases from rape – but some lawyers say the parameters are still vague.

I instantly regretted my decision because I knew my son needed me. The chances of my husband getting a job that would pay enough to cover the cost of childcare were very low. My children needed their mother, and I needed my children. When I was focused on work and they needed my attention, I would redirect them to ask their dad instead. I realize now that all those years, I was bringing my stress and fear from work into my family life.

A deadly Israeli strike on a school turned shelter in northern Gaza on Saturday exposed an agonizing dilemma for civilians in Gaza seeking safety after 10 months of war. They could stay at the schools turned shelters, hoping for a modicum of security in the desperate conditions of Gaza. Or they can flee, knowing that the shelters themselves can become targets. Conditions are atrocious, residents have said, but the schools, which offer walls and access to limited plumbing, are attractive for the simple reason that the alternatives are worse. And diseases are spreading fast in squalid, crowded camps and the ruins of former homes.

Google unnerved Silicon Valley last week when it agreed to pay $2.5 billion to license Character.AI's technology, hire its two superstar cofounders and 20 percent of employees. The deal came after AI developers Adept and Inflection both effectively sold themselves to Amazon and Microsoft, respectively, in recent months. It was only last year Character.AI raised $150 million in venture funding, which valued the company at $850 million. Its appeal as a chatbot that uses AI to make virtual characters that interact with users seems decidedly niche. Related storiesMost of the founders and investors Business Insider spoke to for this story say Google has little interest in Character.AI's actual product.

Tourists are flocking to Costa Rica, with visitors trying to get a taste of the Blue Zone lifestyle that promises better-than-average health and longevity. Researchers from Stanford have studied the Nicoya Blue Zone. "It's not uncommon to see people in Nicoya live to be in their 90s, but we're seeing that number slip back down into the 80s." AdvertisementStill, if you're in the region, you will probably see a lot about the Blue Zone as a selling point driving more tourism. "A lot of people are using it for their business — Blue Zone this, Blue Zone that — I'm sure they know what it means, but the lifestyle is something that's fading, unfortunately, because it was all the old-timers keeping it alive," Jones told BI.

Prior to the company’s demise, it had looked like Europe was poised for something of a night train revolution. Despite this demand, the hurdles for startups like Midnight Train trying to enter the market to meet it remain virtually insurmountable. Formidable obstaclesEuropean Sleeper is one of the few new night train operators to begin services, but the company has struggled to find rolling stock. “Politicians must be clear: the night train market will be effectively closed for a very long time,” he says. With the honorable exception of Nightjet, which plans to expand rapidly over the next five years, European night train services have yet to match the hype.

It’s called a sector rotation, and it happens all the time as part of the natural course of a business cycle. The US economy is still pretty strong, growing at an annualized rate close to 3% in the most recent quarter. But it’s not as if Americans have stopped going to restaurants — they’re just being a bit more discerning when they do. Instead, they’re going to Texas Roadhouse, where they can sit down and have some service with their meal. Or they’re swinging through Chipotle, which saw sales shoot up 11% last quarter at stores open at least a year.

Underneath the blast door stands one of the most powerful weapons in the US inventory, a Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile. But unlike the other two parts of the triad – strategic bombers and ballistic missile submarines – the ICBM launch facilities are fixed positions. Last year, the commander of US Strategic Command told Congress that China has more land-based ballistic missile launchers than the US. Russia has been carrying out military exercises involving its tactical nuclear weapons, as President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly threatened to use nuclear weapons since invading Ukraine. That complexity, Schlabach argued, drives the need for modernizing the ballistic missile fleet.
