For decades, scientists have studied lifespan to determine the impact of the factors that dictate how humans age. Lifespan and healthspan will always overlap in some way, but there is a major difference between the two, says Alan Cohen, associate professor at the Butler Columbia Aging Center at Columbia University. Here's how each term is defined and how diet may play a role in lengthening them both, according to Cohen. Healthspan vs. lifespan: What's the difference? There are different aging metrics, so one diet won't decrease aging across the board.

ATHENS, Dec 28 (Reuters) - A 4.9 magnitude earthquake shook the island of Evia in central Greece on Wednesday and was felt in Athens, according to the Athens Geodynamic Institute. The tremor, with a depth of about 10 kilometres, struck around 1224 GMT in the wider area of Messapia. "It was felt very strongly... and lasted long," Messapia Mayor George Psathas told Skai radio. Seismologists told Greek media that the area had been hit by earthquakes about 20 years ago. Greece is often rattled by earthquakes, most causing no serious damage.
Depending on what you discuss with your therapist, the end of a therapy session can trigger emotions like sadness or exhaustion. Maybe the next day or two, your body feels a bit sore, you're a bit tired. In therapy, you're doing hard work. That's why it's extremely important to decompress after an intense conversation during therapy, even for just five to 15 minutes, says Kaplan. Here are some practices she recommends penciling into your calendar immediately after a therapy session, especially after difficult conversations.
"I'm a health and wellness reporter," I responded "So, you're a vegetarian, aren't you?" Just how many life changes have I made as a result of my health reporting? But I learned from Dr. Kelman that if you're not letting your toothbrush air-dry, you're actually increasing the likelihood of bacteria building up. I read on and learned that the warning was for the holiday lights that were built in to the tree. While researching, I discovered that most holiday lights have lead and phthalates on their wiring, which can be very harmful for young children and pregnant women.
My younger, more disciplined sister hates resolutions: "Why wait for a calendar date to do something that's good for you? Make the decision to be better now," she says, as I eat Christmas cookie dough and promise to give up sugar starting Jan. 1. We need to better understand how habits are formed. So, how do you implement healthier habits without thinking too hard? When it's hard to exercise or eat perfectly or if you just really, really crave takeout from a single-use plastic container, forgive yourself.
Lambert started in her home state of Michigan, joining four lawsuits on behalf of Trump supporters. As Trump zeroed in on vote-rigging allegations in Michigan, Lambert emailed the White House, according to her July 2021 video interview with two right-wing websites. Cotton and Penrose also were involved in examining breached voting machines in Michigan for DePerno and Lambert, according to the Michigan attorney general investigation. In the process, the commissioners were accused of flouting a court order by allowing a forensics company to inspect county voting equipment. In August 2021, a federal judge reprimanded Lambert, Powell and seven other lawyers who joined the failed lawsuit seeking to overturn Michigan’s vote after Trump’s 2020 defeat.
In 2019, Jenean LaCorte put down her paintbrush and picked up a tattoo needle. In a major shift, she went from painting murals to making 3D nipple tattoos for people who've had mastectomies, as a full-time medical tattoo artist. But as cool as her job sounds, it came with a price; committing to the new job meant accepting a pay cut. She now makes about $30,000 a year, which is less than what she made as a painter. Still, LaCorte wouldn't change a thing, and says being a medical tattoo artist matters more to her than her salary.
Most Americans aren't wearing face masks anymore — and their timing isn't great, says a leading infectious disease expert. Just 26% of Americans reported in October that they're wearing masks outside of their homes. Covid alone currently accounts for 386 deaths per day, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The flu and RSV likely add to that figure, though the agency doesn't report the number of deaths per day for those viruses. "Everyone needs to know that masking really does protect individuals against all three viruses," Hijano says.
After the mass layoff of Twitter employees on Nov. 3, a group of former workers turned to the platform's virtual feature for live conversations to process. This inspired him and other former "tweeps," a nickname for Twitter employees, to cultivate a space where those who were laid off could express themselves. Fired Twitter employees turned to 'Twitter Spaces' to raise their spiritsImmediately following the layoffs, many tweeps met up on Google Hangout and spoke via Signal, Terrell says. #TweepTherapy attendees have ranged from former Twitter employees to journalists and even the mayor of Boston, he adds. The first session on "Twitter Spaces" after the mass layoff lasted for 5 or 6 hours, Terrell says.
Jeannie Mai Jenkins, a TV host on syndicated talk show "The Real," kept her Aunt Linh's multiple sclerosis (MS) diagnosis a secret from her other family members, until her aunt was ready to tell them herself. Once her family became aware of her aunt's condition, they decided to change how they approached the holidays. Those taxing gatherings also influenced Mai Jenkins to get involved with Express4MS, a new campaign that aims to provide visibility into the journeys of people living with the disease. Ultimately, her family made adjustments that could help people with conditions beyond MS, too. "If you have someone in your family who has a condition of any kind, keep this in mind," she adds.
You might want to think twice before reaching your hands under a hot-air dryer after using a public restroom. Because you could be covering your freshly cleaned hands — with more bacteria. A 2018 study conducted a test to determine if hand dryers in public bathrooms could be dispensing bacteria onto people's hands. To investigate this, researchers exposed petri dishes to the air in bathrooms in various conditions, and brought the dishes back to their lab to see if bacteria was growing on them. But, "petri dishes exposed to hot air from a bathroom hand dryer for 30 seconds grew up to 254 colonies of bacteria (though most had from 18 to 60 colonies of bacteria)."
Renee Semarge has had long COVID symptoms for a year now, and it's making work much harder. Much of long COVID is a mystery to healthcare professionals — why it happens, how to treat it — but data shows that it has affected millions of Americans. Many other workers, however, may be hesitant to reveal that they have long COVID. Long COVID treatments "have eaten our savings"Semarge's candor about her condition at work is a departure from what her father always taught her. Long COVID treatments, she said, "have eaten our savings.
Practicing self-care in your everyday life doesn't have to be tedious, or even expensive. In many cases, it can actually be free, or pretty close to it. "This is a part of what's called mindfulness." Karper recommends practicing mindfulness by simply tapping into your five senses before emptying your pockets. Here are some ways you can do just that.

That's according to two studies that were published in August and November of this year, which researched how exposure to younger kids and common colds may impact outcomes for adults after contracting Covid-19. Exposure to kids may lower your risk of hospitalization from Covid-19The study, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) in August, discovered an association between people who were exposed to young children and lower risk of severe illness from Covid-19. And researchers compared the severity of outcomes from Covid-19 for people without children and people with children in three different age ranges: 0-5, 6-11 and 12-18. The findings showed that chances of Veteran Affairs patients contracting Covid-19 decreased by 80% to 90% if they tested positive for any of the common coronaviruses between February 2020 and February 2021. This means developing a common cold may shield people from Covid-19 infection, even if for a short period time.

Over 60% of Americans hardly ever wake up feeling energized or rested, according to a 2020 survey conducted by RestoreZ. But not all hope is lost, because there are behaviors that can increase your alertness in the morning and keep you alert for the rest of the day, according to Raphael Vallat, a postdoctoral researcher at the Center for Human Sleep Science at U.C. Vallat recently co-authored a Nature Communications study that observed certain habits that can improve energy after a night's sleep. To determine what activities kept people energized, individuals were asked to record how alert they felt after waking up and throughout the rest of the day. These were the behaviors that were associated with alertness immediately after getting out of bed and beyond.
Having a cute and cuddly pet can be an experience like no other. But for some people, furry animals can trigger their allergies. And the symptoms aren't always as simple as sneezing every now and then, Parikh tells CNBC Make It. But if you have allergies, it doesn't mean that you won't ever be able to adopt a furry friend, Parikh says. Here's what she recommends doing to make sure you're adopting the "purr-fect" companion.
Financial incentives are a great way to get more people on board with pretty much anything, even vaccination efforts. The Bay State is offering $75 gift cards to residents who receive their omicron-specific boosters by December 31 at select vaccine clinics, for as long as supplies last. For children or teens under 18 years old, an accompanying adult must be present to receive the gift card(s)," the site states. WashingtonSimilarly, but on an even larger scale, the governor of Washington, Jay Inslee, wants to offer $1,000 to state workers who get the updated Covid-19 booster. These 4 stores are offering discounts for getting boosted against Covid-19If you're not a resident of Massachusetts or Washington state, there are some financial incentives you may be eligible to receive.
"Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me" spotlights the singer-actress's battle with managing anxiety and depression while performing on her "Revival" tour in 2016. Following what her team thought was a stellar rehearsal before one of her shows, Gomez broke down in tears due to her lack of confidence in her performance. "I get the voice that comes in my head that says 'You missed this,'" she told her team in her documentary on AppleTV+. Coupled with monitoring her lupus and being bombarded by paparazzi asking about her ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber and her relationship with alcohol, Gomez's mental health became too much for her to manage. Soon after, she checked into a mental health facility and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
In his new book, "The Blue Zones American Kitchen: 100 Recipes to Live to 100," Dan Buettner "identified the world's longest-lived areas (blue zones) and studied the patterns and lifestyles that seem to explain their populations' longevity." Blue zones are defined by Buettner as populations with the highest rates of living to 100 – or becoming centenarians – and the highest middle-age life expectancies. "The people in the blue zones live up to a decade longer than average Americans and spend a fraction of what most [of] the rest of us do on health care," Buettner wrote. Many of these communities have more opportunities to walk from place to place and tend to stress much less than most Americans. But, after analyzing over 150 dietary surveys that capture "the daily eating habits of people in the blue zones over the past 80 years," these were the most common foods included in their diets.
At the height of the pandemic, Americans across the country were wiping down their groceries with antibacterial wipes for protection from Covid-19. Actually, Covid-19 can live on the surfaces of certain groceries for an entire week, according to a new study conducted by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) in the U.K. Researchers purposely deposited the virus on produce and packaging like vegetables, baked goods and canned drinks, to observe how long Covid could live on their surfaces. FSA concluded that the proportion of foods or food packaging with Covid-19 contamination on their surfaces "is extremely low, but not negligible." Here are the foods that Covid lived on the longest and how you can be the most protected from the virus as you consume your groceries.
