North Korea fired multiple short range ballistic missiles into waters east of the Korean peninsula on September 12, Seoul's military reported, days after the nuclear-armed North marked a state anniversary. After North Korea fired several ballistic missiles toward the Sea of Japan, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said Thursday that he "strongly condemns" the move, adding that Tokyo has already "lodged a protest" with the Hermit Kingdom. Needless to say, the launch of ballistic missiles by North Korea is a violation of the UN Security Council resolutions," Kishida said. North Korea fired several short-range ballistic missiles off its east coast towards the Sea of Japan Thursday morning local time, according to the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff. Read previewA Navy SEAL unit that killed Osama bin Laden is busy preparing for a possible Chinese invasion of Taiwan, the Financial Times reported, citing people familiar with the preparations. SEAL Team 6, an elite military special missions unit, has spent more than a year planning and training for a potential Chinese invasion of the island at its Dam Neck base in Virginia Beach, per the FT. People familiar with its planning did not provide details to the FT about what specific missions it is preparing for. These include the rapid modernization of its armed forces over the past two decades, and drills around Taiwan. According to a June report from the American think tank RAND Corp, the US — if it decided to defend Taiwan from a Chinese invasion — may have to do it alone as several of its biggest allies are unlikely to commit troops.

Gold prices edged higher on Thursday, with traders focusing on the upcoming U.S. economic data that may offer further insights into an expected reduction in the Federal Reserve's interest rate next week. Data on Wednesday showed that U.S. consumer prices rose marginally in August, but underlying inflation showed some stickiness, which could discourage the Federal Reserve from delivering a half-point interest rate cut next week. CPI data showed no major inflation spikes, which is supporting gold prices to hold above $2,500 and suggesting no immediate changes to Fed policy, Wong added. Palladium climbed 1.3% to $1,021.84, its highest since July 8, following comments on export regulations from Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The El Niño of 252 million years ago would have originated in the Panthalassic Ocean, a body of water much larger than today’s Pacific that could hold more heat, which in turn would have strengthened and sustained El Niño effects. The planet had experienced similar episodes earlier but they hadn’t triggered a mass extinction. A prolonged and intense El Niño also explained why extinctions had begun on land before they occurred in the ocean, the study said. This data showed how temperature rose at different latitudes as the mass extinction unfolded. El Niño events today are known to cause coral bleaching and mass mortality of fish, the study noted, but the ecological impact and future trajectory of El Niño events in a warming climate are unknown.

When Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang spoke to Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon on Wednesday, the banker raised this relationship — and how precarious it is due to rising tension in the Taiwan Strait. This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. Last year, Huang said he felt "perfectly safe" relying on manufacturing in Taiwan. Huang went on to praise TSMC for scaling up to meet the demand that created Nvidia's "hockey stick" earnings in recent years.

TOKYO — U.S. opponents of a Japanese steelmaker’s $14.9 billion bid for U.S. Steel cite concerns about national security and a reluctance to relinquish a storied American company. That could complicate efforts to strengthen ties with Japan, a key U.S. ally, in an effort to counter China’s growing influence in the Asia-Pacific and around the world. Washington has also been pushing Tokyo to align itself with U.S. export controls that limit China’s ability to produce advanced semiconductors. The opposition to the deal “also places Japan in the unenviable company of China in terms of Washington’s politicization of economic issues,” Kingston said in an email. Other U.S. Steel employees have rallied in support of the deal, which was announced last December.

But more than half the global population isn’t eating enough of these and five other nutrients also crucial for human health, according to a new study. More than 5 billion people don’t consume enough iodine, vitamin E or calcium, found the study published August 29 in the journal The Lancet Global Health. Billions of people don’t consume enough of at least seven micronutrients present in hundreds of foods, according to a new study. For these reasons, the research team estimated the prevalence of inadequate intakes of 15 micronutrients among 185 countries, or 99.3% of the population. “Therefore, iodine might be the only nutrient for which inadequate intake from food is largely overestimated,” the authors said, referring to their findings.

The group released the survey last week with two nonprofit organizations, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders for Civic Empowerment Education Fund and Asian American Futures. The survey authors interviewed 1,253 Asian Americans across six of the largest Asian ethnic groups in California. Ramakrishnan said the results are relatively consistent with Asian American voters in the past. Still, there continues to be a misconception that appealing to Asian Americans, which often requires multilingual outreach, is too expensive, Ramakrishnan said. But hiring more Asian Americans on campaigns could help solve that issue.

The call was the first time in years that the two regional military commanders have engaged in a formal conversation. Citing multiple recent “unsafe interactions” between China’s People’s Liberation Army and U.S. allies, Paparo said the Chinese military had an obligation “to comply with international laws and norms to ensure operational safety,” the readout said. Paparo also urged the Chinese military to reconsider what he said was its use of “dangerous, coercive and potentially escalatory tactics in the South China Sea and beyond,” it added. SINGAPORE — Global markets are severely overplaying an oil supply glut, said Jeff Currie, chief strategy officer of energy pathways at private equity giant Carlyle. China's crude oil imports in 2023 had notched a record high. China's oil demand has been declining on the back of a slump in industrial inputs, according the International Energy Agency. On the supply side, black oil production in the U.S., one of the world's top crude oil producers, has been "flat" this year, Currie said. Support locally-owned businesses instead of visiting chain restaurants. Eat at a one-of-a-kind local spot instead of the chains you have back at home. Ashley ProbstTwo popular mainland chain restaurants, Chick-fil-A and Raising Cane's, opened on Maui this past summer — but from what I heard, some locals weren't pleased because these fast-food chains could take business away from locally owned businesses. To me, it seems like a waste to fly all the way out to Hawaii just to eat the same things you might have access to at home. Instead, I recommend supporting local businesses and taking the opportunity to enjoy authentic Pacific-island fare.
