The Palisades nuclear plant in Michigan has closed a $1.5 billion loan to support the first reactor restart in U.S. history, the Department of Energy announced Monday. Palisades' owner, Holtec International, hopes to restart the plant in the fourth quarter of 2025, subject to approval by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Demand for nuclear power is growing as the U.S. seeks carbon-free energy to meet rising electricity demand while meeting its climate goals. In the case of Palisades, the power is spoken for by Wolverine Power Cooperative, a nonprofit that provides electricity to rural communities in Michigan. Palisades will support 600 jobs in Covert Township near Lake Michigan and provide enough power for 800,000 homes, Turk said.

Some of it had to do with the old joke being that Best Buy was nothing but an Amazon showroom. CEO Corie Barry is a no-nonsense heavyweight who mastered the supply chain for Best Buy during the pandemic. As the JPMorgan recent upgrade on Best Buy said, most investors don't realize how awful this period has been for Best Buy. California governor vetoes contentious AI safety bill
  + stars: | 2024-09-29 | by ( Story Reuters | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
Reuters —California Governor Gavin Newsom on Sunday vetoed a hotly contested artificial intelligence safety bill, after the tech industry raised objections, saying it could drive AI companies from the state and hinder innovation. The AI industry is growing fast in California and some leaders questioned the future of these companies in the state if the bill became law. Developers of AI software operating in the state would have also needed to outline methods for turning off the AI models, effectively a kill switch. Alphabet’s Google, Microsoft-backed OpenAI and Meta Platforms, all of which are developing generative AI models, had expressed their concerns about the proposal. Newsom separately signed legislation requiring the state to assess potential threats posed by Generative AI to California’s critical infrastructure.
