FBI Director Christopher Wray bragged about the agency's recruitment when informed of its low popularity. Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz claimed the bureau was trusted more under the notorious leadership of J. Edgar Hoover. Gaetz grew agitated with Wray after a series of aggressive questions about Hunter Biden and the FBI's January 6 investigation. "People trusted the FBI more when J. Edgar Hoover was running the place than when you are. "I certainly didn't perjure myself," Wray shot back Gaetz, who had accused him of lying to lawmakers.

Republicans who got lots of corporate cash in 2020 were less likely to object to the election results. In short, Miller's research found that the more corporate PAC money a House Republican received over the course of the 2020 election cycle, the less likely they were to vote to object to the certification of the 2020 election results in Arizona or Pennsylvania. Additionally, the likelihood that a House Republican would vote to object went down roughly 11 points with every additional $500,000 they received in corporate PAC money. In the wake of January 6, several corporations halted contributions to lawmakers' who had voted to object to the election results — though many later resumed making donations. A chief proponent of the notion that the 2020 election was stolen who objected to the results in both Arizona and Pennsylvania, Gaetz has sworn off corporate PAC money.

Gaetz said he's happy the fight is being led by two younger lawmakers, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Dan Crenshaw. "Not collecting Social Security," Gaetz told the Post about his colleagues, Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a New York Democrat, and Dan Crenshaw, a Texas Republican. But Crenshaw said Gaetz told him that the duo was being dismissed. "He was like, 'I needed you to do this,'" Crenshaw told the Post of Gaetz's pitch. "'Otherwise it's just typical Gaetz, typical AOC.'"

While meeting with the prime minister of India and tech CEOs, Biden made a joke. "I started off without you, and I sold a lot of state secrets and a lot of very important things that we shared," Biden said before adding, "Now, all kidding aside." Now, Republican legislators are sharing a spliced clip of it in an attempt to discredit the president. The interaction led to a laugh from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the president's audience. In the days following Biden's press conference, select Republican legislators spread the clip without Biden saying "all kidding aside" to attack his credibility.

Six months since the House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, assault on the Capitol completed its work, a far-right ecosystem of true believers has embraced “J6” as the animating force of their lives. They attend the criminal trials of the more prominent rioters charged in the attack. They gather to pray and sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” on the outer perimeter of the District of Columbia jail, where some two dozen defendants are held. Last week, dozens showed up at an unofficial House hearing convened by a handful of Republican lawmakers to challenge “the fake narrative that an insurrection had occurred on Jan. 6,” as set forth by Jeffrey Clark, a witness at the hearing and a former Justice Department official who worked to undo the results of the 2020 election. The 90-minute event was a through-the-looking-glass alternative to the damning case against former President Donald J. Trump presented last year by the Jan. 6 committee.

Vance announced a hold of all Department of Justice (DOJ) nominees on June 13. 2 Republican John Thune is holding DOJ appointments in response to federal charges against former President Donald Trump. Republicans have condemned the Justice Department for the charges over Trump’s handling of classified documents, Reuters reported (here), (here). Ryan Wrasse, communications director for Thune, said the claim that Thune is holding DOJ nominees is “completely false.” Wrasse also addressed this in a June 13 tweet (here). There is no public evidence of Thune holding DOJ nominees in response to the Trump indictment, and Thune’s spokesperson has denied the claim.

WASHINGTON, June 14 (Reuters) - The U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday rejected a Republican effort to censure Representative Adam Schiff, a Democrat who played a leading role in the first impeachment of then-President Donald Trump in 2019. The Republican-controlled chamber defeated the motion by a vote of 225 to 196, with 20 Republicans joining 205 Democrats in opposition. Schiff is running for California's Senate seat in 2024 and sent a fundraising email based on Wednesday's censure move. Republican Representative Paul Gosar was censured in 2021 after he posted a cartoon video that showed him killing Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the first time the censure had been used in a decade. In a letter to Democratic colleagues, Schiff called the motion "not only a terrible misuse of House precedent and resources, but a clear attack on our constitutional system of checks and balances."

[1/2] U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) speaks to reporters on Capitol Hill in Washington, U.S., June 8, 2023. If we don't have that, there are going to be fights," Representative Ralph Norman told reporters after he and several other members of the House of Representatives met with McCarthy. "We had a very productive meeting tonight," McCarthy told reporters after the meeting. The House is scheduled to begin voting on delayed Republican bills on Tuesday, starting with a floor rule governing debate and votes on passage. But the hardliners are also looking to expand their influence over the House Republican agenda.

Trump's allies and enemies took to Twitter en masse to weigh in on his second indictment. The common refrain from Democrats and Trump's opponents within the GOP was that nobody was above the law. The MAGA faithful rallied around a twice-indicted Trump, and pointed fingers at Joe Biden. They claim the indictment distracts people from a $5 million bribe that Biden received. Greene tweeted on Thursday: "This is what Joe Biden got paid $5 million to do. President Donald Trump will be back in the White House and Joe Biden will be Hunter's cellmate," he wrote. Sen. Marsha Blackburn from Tennessee tweeted: "Now that President Biden is reportedly involved in a $5 million bribery scheme with a foreign nation, what does the DOJ do?

President Joe Biden vetoed a GOP-led effort to block his student debt relief. The Supreme Court is also due to consider the legality of Biden's plan by the end of June. "But when it comes to hard-working Americans trying to get ahead, dealing with student debt relief, that's where they drew the line," he said. Conservatives have argued that the debt-relief measure is unfair on people who didn't go to college but still have debts. But despite Biden's veto, the debt-relief measure is not home and dry.

Hard-right Republicans pressed their mutiny against Speaker Kevin McCarthy into a second day on Wednesday, keeping control of the House floor in a raw display of their power that raised questions about whether the speaker could continue to govern his slim and fractious majority. Mr. McCarthy, who enraged ultraconservative Republicans by striking a compromise with President Biden to suspend the debt limit, has yet to face a bid to depose him, as some hard-right members have threatened. But the rebellion has left him, at least for now, as speaker in name only, deprived of a governing majority. “House Leadership couldn’t Hold the Line,” Representative Matt Gaetz, Republican of Florida and a leader of the rebellion, tweeted on Wednesday. In a remarkable act of intraparty aggression, about a dozen rebels ground the chamber to a halt on Tuesday by siding with Democrats to defeat a procedural measure needed to allow legislation to move forward, and business cannot resume until they back down and vote with their own party.

A group of hard-line Republicans hijacked the House floor on Tuesday, grinding legislative business to a halt for several hours in a striking display of ire at Speaker Kevin McCarthy for making a deal with President Biden to suspend the debt limit and banding together with Democrats to muscle it to passage. The mutiny, staged by nearly a dozen members of the ultraconservative House Freedom Caucus as leaders sought to bring up legislation to guard against restrictions on gas stoves and other federal regulations, reflected the bitter acrimony lingering in the Republican ranks after passage of the debt limit measure last week. It indicated that, even as right-wing lawmakers suggest they are not yet inclined to try to oust Mr. McCarthy from his post over the compromise, they plan to use their clout in the closely divided House to make the speaker’s job impossible unless he bows to their will. “We’re concerned that the fundamental commitments that allowed Kevin McCarthy to assume the speakership have been violated as a consequence of the debt limit deal, and the answer for us is to reassert House conservatives as the appropriate coalition partner for our leadership, instead of them making common cause with Democrats,” Representative Matt Gaetz of Florida told reporters.

Far-right House members are not pleased with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy's debt ceiling compromise. Eleven conservative GOP members nuked McCarthy's bans on banning gas stoves, sending his plans up in flames. The Gas Stove Protection and Freedom Act would have barred the Consumer Product Safety Commission from using federal funds to regulate gas stoves or issue safety guidance that would ban them or make them more expensive. To peel back the layers here: The folks who have championed gas stoves versus induction stoves in the culture wars voted against H.Res. 463 — a procedural vote to establish rules on a floor vote for two gas stove-related bills — to punish McCarthy.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, the controversial House Republican from Georgia, blasted Steve Bannon and other far-right figures in a series of messages to Rep. Matt Gaetz, according to texts obtained by The Daily Beast. "Steve and I aren't patching things up," Greene texted to Gaetz, per the Daily Beast. "She took a job from me when she publicly accused me of being crazy," Loomer said to The Daily Beast. She told Gaetz her town hall got "standing ovations" and that "Steve, Loomer, and anyone else coming after me won't beat me." When reached for comment, Rep. A growing number of conservative lawmakers are opposing Biden and McCarthy's debt-ceiling deal. They argued it does not include enough spending cuts, with Rep. Chip Roy calling it a "turd-sandwich." Lawmakers need to pass a bill to raise the debt ceiling before the US defaults as early as June 5. Both Biden and McCarthy said over the weekend that this deal is the best option for Americans. And McCarthy wrote on Twitter on Saturday that "I just got off the phone with the president a bit ago.
Republicans have refused to raise the debt ceiling without reducing the deficit. The US could default on its debt in less than a week unless Congress raises the debt ceiling. House Democrats blame this "reckless hostage taking" on Republicans. House Democrats have flipped the switch. House Democrats are blaming their Republican colleagues for rejecting Democratic proposals to reduce the deficit.
Some GOP lawmakers don't want McCarthy to budge on any of their demands in a debt ceiling deal. The US could default on its debt as soon as June 1, and the parties have yet to reach a deal. McCarthy and Biden met on Monday evening to once again attempt to reach a deal on raising the debt ceiling. And even with an economically catastrophic default looming, some GOP lawmakers don't want McCarthy to budge on Republican demands to reach a deal. Many progressive lawmakers have criticized compromising with Republicans on the debt ceiling, reinforcing Biden's repeated statements that raising the debt ceiling should be a bipartisan and clean process, without any spending cuts attached.
Tucker Carlson was kicked off Fox News ahead of a monologue about January 6, per his biographer. Carlson reportedly planned to talk about Ray Epps, who is falsely accused of sparking the insurrection. Epps is the subject of a false conspiracy theory that he's an FBI plant. Carlson has nonetheless repeatedly promoted the conspiracy theory on his show, as have far-right Republican lawmakers including Sen. Ted Cruz and Reps. Matt Gaetz, Thomas Massie, and Marjorie Taylor Greene. Carlson and Fox News are negotiating the terms of Carlson's exit from the network.
