CNN —Add to the list of Taylor Swift and Beyoncé’s accomplishments an unlikely new mission: Helping to save movie theaters, as theater owners – apparently tired of waiting for Hollywood to mount a rescue mission – have seemingly opted to take matters into their own hands. Swift’s deal with AMC to play a concert movie based on her “Eras Tour,” opening October 13, will be followed by Beyoncé’s plan to do the same with her “Renaissance World Tour,” destined to hit theaters in December. Taylor Swift performing in August during her "Eras Tour." Getty ImagesWhether this amounts to a stopgap measure or a full pivot into a new opportunity for theaters remains to be seen. For now, the twin power of Beyoncé and Swift could represent the unlikely heroes for which theaters – having spent the last few years grappling with existential questions about the future – have been waiting.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — It started as a crude sketch — a circle with a stick person inside. He and MSG Ventures CEO David Dibble were trying to create a plan to give the entertainment venue industry a facelift in Las Vegas. “That’s cool,” said Glenn NP Nowak, an architecture professor at the nearby University of Nevada, Las Vegas. However, the Sphere is the most expensive entertainment venue built in Las Vegas, eclipsing the approximately $1.9 billion, 65,000-seat Allegiant Stadium sports facility that opened in 2020. Actors used to get voice-over work in traditional ways, through their agent. I did a voice-over courseI found an online course in 2016 called Voiceover Kickstart. I had no idea my voice would attract a lot of corporate work, but it did. When I was getting consistent corporate work, I was able to build my brand in response to that, both on and off the platform. From that, I've been getting unexpected opportunities in types of work that I'd never thought I would be doing, such as audiobooks.

A group of bull sharks lived in a freshwater golf course pond for over 17 years. Sharks in a golf course pond is odder still. They are somewhat of a scientific marvel because they've lived in freshwater longer than any other bull shark that scientists have observed. ATLANTA (AP) — Baseball's best team has some major pitching concerns heading into the final week of the regular season. Strider remains confident in his team, no matter who is healthy for the playoffs. Without Fried, the Braves would have to turn to someone they never expected to use for a playoff start. Morton (14-12) definitely is out until at least the best-of-seven NL Championship Series, which begins Oct. 16 and would require four starters. NEW YORK (AP) — Rupert Murdoch, the 92-year-old Australian media magnate whose creation of Fox News made him a force in American politics, is stepping down as leader of both Fox's parent company and his News Corp. media holdings. Fox said Thursday that Murdoch would become chairman emeritus of both companies, effective at board meetings in November. Stock in Fox Corp., while positive this year, began to decline early in 2022, due in part to lawsuits and investor anxiety over the loss of viewers to smaller media outlets. While Murdoch never ran for political office, politicians in the United States and Britain anxiously sought his approval. Murdoch dismissed them as isolated instances that were “largely political because we're conservative.”Shares of News Corp. and Fox rose Thursday in early trading.

Members of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild walk the picket line outside of Fox Studios in Los Angeles, California, on August 9, 2023. Film and TV production ground to a halt 100 days ago when writers downed their pens, only to be joined on the picket lines in mid-July by actors. Writers and producers are near an agreement to end the Writers Guild of America strike after meeting face to face on Wednesday, people close to the negotiations told CNBC. While optimistic, the people noted, however, that if a deal is not reached the strike could last through the end of the year. This appears to be the closest the two sides have come to a resolution since the more than 11,000 film and TV writers went on strike beginning May 2.

And Apple has long been seen by some analysts as the most obvious acquirer of all or part of Disney. Iger said he considers the studio, streaming, and parks businesses (where the company recently set plans to invest $60 billion over the next decade) to have the most value. It would be hard to imagine operating the parks or streaming businesses without owning the popular franchises that fuel them. Last Saturday’s final between Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka exemplified some of the very best and very worst of the tournament. Their contrast of styles was on display for all to see: Sabalenka’s power and single-mindedness against Gauff’s ability to endure and problem-solve. Gauff’s win, however, was immediately understood as symbolizing American core values such as determination, grit and self-belief. This reflexive American triumphalism turns any final into little more than a prologue, with more and better promised in the future. It just sells the product; a grasping for greatness in the moment instead of simply letting the moment be.
