REUTERS/Loren Elliott Acquire Licensing RightsTAIPEI, Aug 17 (Reuters) - Taiwan Vice President William Lai has promised during a visit to San Francisco to take peace as his "lighthouse" and democracy as his guide, on the final leg of a trip that China has condemned. China, which claims Taiwan as its territory, has denounced the transit stops in the United States and called Lai a "troublemaker". "Taiwan is a crucial partner in U.S. efforts to maintain global peace and stability, including in the Taiwan Strait," Rosenberger said. The United States has no formal ties with Taiwan but is bound by law to provide the island with the means to defend itself.

Bill Miller expects a strong second-half showing from the US stock market. The Miller Value Partners founder sees a rosy economy and defeated bears driving stocks higher. "It's entirely possible that we're going to get back to a 2% inflation rate by the end of this year," Miller said during a recent live call hosted by Miller Value Partners. Miller noted that a robust first-half showing from stocks is usually followed by a similarly strong second half. The veteran fund manager predicted stocks would head higher, as bearish institutional investors swallow their doubts and pile into equities to catch up to their peers.

August 16 - The American League Central-leading Minnesota Twins will try to complete a two-game series sweep of the Tigers on Wednesday afternoon in Minneapolis. Olson is just 2-5 with a 4.45 ERA in 13 career games (10 starts) but has handled the Twins easily. The homer to right-center off reliever Will Vest was Wallner's ninth of the season and his first major league grand slam. It was the longest grand slam hit by a Twin during the Statcast era (since 2015). Wallner's grand slam took some of the spotlight away from Detroit's Miguel Cabrera.

CNN —On the eve of his Hall of Fame induction, NBA legend Dirk Nowitzki has said that his daughter is “mostly embarrassed” about any “hoopla” surrounding her dad. Alongside the German, two-time NBA champion Pau Gasol, four-time NBA champion Tony Parker, San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich, Dwyane Wade and the 1976 U.S. Olympic Women’s basketball team, among others, will be inducted. However, at a press conference on Tuesday, Nowitzki admitted that his impending inauguration has not yet fully resonated with his children. Nowitzki scored 35,223 points across 21 seasons in Dallas, playing 1,667 games for the only NBA team he ever featured for – only John Stockton played more games for one team across his career. His crowning moment arguably came in 2011 when he led the Mavs to the NBA title, the organization’s first and only championship in its history.
