For much of 2021, my 11-year-old son and I had a bedtime ritual: brush teeth, watch Leslie Jordan videos, read. Our nightly Leslie Jordan check-ins had become more than just punchlines and stories. A gay actor and comedian, Jordan would toe the line with sexual innuendo one day (have you seen his Back Door Donuts post? With all due respect to social skills therapists, a Jordan video proved much more fun than our usual lessons about tone of voice and body language. “But is he married or is he gay?” Daniel asked, and around and around we went one night.
CNN —Scrolling through Leslie Jordan’s Instagram account could make you smile, laugh, and, now, cry. Instagram brought Jordan more fame and offered his audience a platform to connect with a sassy, funny, uncle-type many needed during a dark time. Jordan told the Washington Post in 2020 that he had returned from California to his native Chattanooga on family business and decided to stay to shelter in place with his loved ones. Jordan grew an Instagram following of nearly 6 million people over who reveled in his jokes, observations and stories. You’ve got to help one another.”Jordan’s final post before he died, posted Sunday, gave some chills in light of what was to come.

But new planes are in short supply, they warned, limiting growth and keeping fares high. JetBlue Airways said Tuesday that it was supposed to receive 29 planes from Airbus next year but will only get about 22. That means airlines that had parked planes and slashed growth are now struggling to expand. Boeing and Airbus, which didn't immediately comment, are set to report results on Wednesday and Friday, respectively. Raytheon's Pratt and Whitney engines fly on both Boeing and Airbus planes, and its Collins Aerospace unit supplies both manufacturers.
A JetBlue Airways Corp. plane prepares for landing at LaGuardia Airport in New York, U.S., on Tuesday, April 18, 2017. JetBlue Airways eked out a $57 million profit for the third quarter as strong travel demand and higher fares helped the carrier cover more expensive fuel and other costs. The New York-based airline's revenue rose 30% during the quarter from the same period last year to $2.56 billion, in line with analysts' estimates. Larger U.S. carriers have been upbeat about travel demand and largely outperformed analysts' expectations on resilient travel demand, particularly on the return of international trips. The airline forecast fourth-quarter unit costs, excluding fuel, to be up as much as 10.5% from three years ago.

Spirit Airlines shareholders have approved a takeover by JetBlue Airways after a six-month battle to create the country’s fifth-largest carrier, a deal that now faces a high hurdle with federal regulators. Spirit announced the results of the vote after a special shareholder meeting on Wednesday. In April, JetBlue made a $3.8 billion all-cash offer for Spirit, derailing Spirit’s plan for a cash-and-stock deal to merge with Frontier Airlines. The airlines now must convince federal regulators that that agreement won’t harm competition and drive up fares for consumers, a major hurdle in getting the takeover approved. If the takeover is approved, JetBlue plans to do away with the Spirit brand, known for its ultra-low airfares and bare-bones service with fees for add-ons like carry-on bags.

United Airlines is planning another big schedule increase for trans-Atlantic travel, in a bet that consumers will continue to shell out for international trips, some of which they had put off for years. Next summer, United says it will fly to 37 cities in Europe, Africa, India and the Middle East, a total it said is more than other U.S. airlines combined. London's Heathrow Airport warned Tuesday that travel demand is "uncertain." It will also offer flights from Washington Dulles International Airport to Berlin on a Boeing 767, starting May 25. That guidance is an increase from its July forecast for a 10% to 12% increase. American forecast a pretax margin of 4.5%, above an earlier estimate of no more than 4%. American is set to report quarterly results before the market opens on Oct. 20.
The cost of shipping air freight around the world is slumping, but some companies say the world's shift to flying goods around the world will keep the market attractive for years. Air freight is a tiny part of the overall cargo market, but supply chain problems, travel restrictions and voracious consumer spending pushed the niche to the forefront during the pandemic. Boeing and Airbus are both selling freighter versions of their newest wide-body planes, which are more fuel-efficient than older cargo jets, and demand to convert older passenger planes into freighters has been so strong some slots are booked up for years. Traditional ocean freight companies like Maersk have recently gotten into the air cargo market. And passenger airlines have reaped the rewards of strong cargo demand during the Covid pandemic to supplement traditional revenue streams.
Summer's over, but the European travel season isn't

This photograph taken on August 7, 2018, shows an American Airlines Airbus A330-243 aircraft on the tarmac at Roissy-Charles de Gaulle Airport, north of Paris. It's a welcome shift for airlines as they seek to drum up revenue after travel restrictions and concerns about Covid-19 sapped demand for many European trips in 2020 and 2021. Lucrative business travel segments have been slower to return than leisure, making these trips all the more crucial. "I think there's no question that people's appetite for going to Europe has gotten longer," said Kyle Potter, executive editor of Thrifty Traveler, a travel and flight deal website. Plus, a strong U.S. dollar is making fall trips to Europe more attractive, driving down costs of everything from shopping in Milan to high-end dining in Paris or London for many U.S. travelers.
