Wayfair is cutting 13% of its global workforce as the digital home goods retailer looks to trim down its structure, cut out layers of management and reduce costs, it announced Friday. The company plans to lay off around 1,650 employees, including 19% of its corporate team, with a focus on people in management and leadership positions, the company said. The restructuring – the third Wayfair has implemented since summer 2022 – is expected to save the company about $280 million, it said. The layoffs come after Hasbro , Etsy and Macy's all announced cuts to their workforces as retailers contend with slowing demand and an uncertain economy. As a result, Wayfair has needed to make cuts to ensure its staffing levels are proportionate to how much business it's doing.

In comments to a Kentucky House panel, Adams bluntly urged lawmakers to “not go backwards” as he defended the law allowing three days of no-excuse, in-person early voting. Adams' remarks were aimed at a Senate bill that would end the early voting days. “I’m keeping an open mind because I never was a big fan of early voting to begin with,” he said Friday. “There’s nothing bad and everything good with the way Kentucky adopted and implemented early voting,” University of Kentucky law professor Joshua A. Douglas said in an email Friday. Adams' office said that would draw just a tiny fraction of the electorate, making it no substitution for the current three days of no-excuse, in-person early voting.

Washington CNN —The two Georgia election workers who won a nearly $150 million judgment against Rudy Giuliani accused the former Trump lawyer and New York mayor in a court filing Thursday of unfairly taking advantage of the bankruptcy system. However, filing for bankruptcy gave Giuliani an immediate pause from having to pay debts he owes. He is also looking to appeal the jury verdict in proceedings outside of bankruptcy court, which would require permission from the bankruptcy judge. After hearing testimony from Freeman, Moss and experts, a DC jury awarded the extraordinary sum for the harm he did to them. Moss and Freeman noted in their filing Thursday that Giuliani continued to defame them, even this month, by repeating the falsehood that they counted fraudulent votes in the 2020 presidential election.

I had to talk my way through the door because they were measuring you before you went in. In fact, Kidman says she took the lessons she learned from those rejections and passed them on to her children. Performance coach Steve Magness previously told CNBC Make It that even a simple grammatical shift can boost your resilience.

What weight tells us about our health

(CNN) — If you’ve been paying attention to health news recently, you may have noticed a subtle but real shift in the way society discusses body weight. Beyond health care dollarsDespite changing attitudes about larger bodies, excess weight does carry a price. From a health care standpoint, it costs the country a lot of money. According to a study published in the journal The Lancet in 2020, 27% of total health care expenditures in 2016 — about $730.4 billion — could be attributed to “modifiable risk factors” for preventable health conditions like cardiovascular disease. That was eight years ago, when our total health care expenditure was $2.7 trillion, according to the study.

But aid officials expressed concern. The sanctions that come with the formal designation are meant to sever violent extremist groups from their sources of financing. Aid groups during the height of Yemen's war issued repeated warnings that millions of Yemenis were on the brink of famine. Aid groups said that step could have the effect of criminalizing ordinary trade and assistance to Yemenis. At home, the designation helps the Houthis' message to Yemenis that the U.S. is the cause of their suffering, Al-Omeisy said.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Emmy Awards telecast on Fox reached a record low audience of 4.3 million viewers, as the long-term trend of diminishing ratings for the show continues. That show, which honored both TV and movies and had bigger stars in attendance including Taylor Swift, had 9.4 million viewers. The height-of-the-pandemic Emmys in 2020 on ABC, with no in-person audience and remote nominees, set a new low at the time with 6.1 million viewers, but the show bounced back the following year with 7.4 million for CBS. The last time the Emmys reached more than 10 million viewers was 2018, when it drew in 10.2 million. The show had 21.8 million viewers in 2000, a level it's unlikely ever to reach again.

CNN —Drinking a glass or more of 100% fruit juice each day was linked to a small increase in weight in children and adults, according to a new analysis of prior studies. In such a context, fruit juice is a much better choice than soda, for many reasons,” said Katz in an email. How juice impacts the bodyFor some, the concern over 100% fruit juice may be baffling — fruit is healthy, right? Eating a whole apple, for example, doesn’t spike blood sugar levels because fructose, the sugar found naturally in fruits and some vegetables, is released slowly into the blood. In children, each additional serving per day of 100% fruit juice was associated with a 0.03 higher body mass index, or BMI, change, according to the study.

It was the latest difficult episode for New York’s subway system, in many ways the backbone of the city, which has struggled in the early going of 2024. Already this year, there have been two train derailments, one of which injured 26 people and led to significant service disruptions for days. And last week, a teenage boy was killed in what authorities said was a “subway surfing” incident, in which thrill-seekers ride atop cars. Shootings on subway trains are rare and make up a fraction of the city’s overall gun crime. In November, two people were shot on a moving subway car in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn.

I want meals to be a time we are all present togetherI know taking kids out for meals is stressful and chaotic. I will often cart a bag full of crayons and blank paper because my kids love to draw. We have tons of Wikki Stix — short sticks covered in non-toxic wax — that allow them to make creations beyond coloring. I'm not here to say my way is better than anyone else's way, and I don't judge people who do choose to use screens during meals. For our family, it means no screen time during meals, which might also mean I will never have a warm meal again.

5 charts that explain why stocks took off last year

Stocks ended on a high note last year, but were tested by the Federal Reserve’s interest rate hikes, banking turmoil, debt ceiling worries and war in the Middle East. Many early-year consensus predictions about what 2023 would bring — including a recession and several rate cuts — didn’t pan out. CNN spoke with five investors about the biggest lessons they learned and how they’ve helped shape their 2024 outlooks. Fundamentals have to start matteringThe S&P 500 index gained 24% last year despite an earnings recession, often defined as at least two straight quarters of corporate profit losses. Fourth-quarter earnings, which kick off on Friday with results from big banks, are expected to grow about 1% in the fourth quarter of 2023.

I was surprised this week to note the large number of health-care names represented on the new highs list. Here are three stocks in the health-care sector that could provide further upside potential based on their improving technical characteristics. That all changed in November, when BSX finally broke above this well-established resistance level, pushing into the upper $50s this month. From November 2022 to June 2023, AMGN dropped from around $295 to $215, shedding about 27% of its value in just seven months. With any breakouts like this one, it's important to watch the previous resistance level which often serves as price support going forward.

These genetic variants may have subsequently proved beneficial to European populations in making the shift from hunting and gathering to farming. “DNA from hunter-gatherers is present at higher levels in Northeastern Europe, which means the region has an elevated genetic risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease,” Barrie said. Similarly, the ancient genetic information shed light on the evolutionary history of traits such as height and lactose tolerance. And for most traits, MS included, the genetic effects are the result of multiple genetic variants,” he said. “Ultimately, we can’t say that MS came from Bronze Age populations, but these populations’ movements and environments contribute to differences in MS risk today.”

CNN —The disappearing “magic islands” on Saturn’s largest moon Titan have intrigued scientists since NASA’s Cassini mission spotted them during flybys a decade ago. Titan, larger than both our moon and the planet Mercury, is the only moon in our solar system with a thick atmosphere. The sea is 50% larger than Lake Superior and is made up of liquid methane, ethane and nitrogen. An artist's illustration shows a lake at the north pole of Saturn's moon Titan, including raised rims spied by Cassini. CNN —Two stubborn fasteners trapped invaluable material sampled from an asteroid — but after a monthslong process, it has finally been released, NASA announced Thursday. The space agency already harvested about 2.5 ounces (70 grams) of rocks and dust from its OSIRIS-REx mission, which traveled nearly 4 billion miles to collect the unprecedented sample from the near-Earth asteroid called Bennu. But NASA revealed in October that some material remained out of reach in a capsule hidden inside an instrument called the Touch-and-Go Sample Acquisition Mechanism — a robotic arm with a storage container at one end that collected the sample from Bennu. The sampler head is held shut by 35 fasteners, according to NASA, but two of them proved too difficult to open. What the asteroid sample has revealed so farAs of Thursday afternoon, NASA said the trapped sample material had not yet been revealed.
