NA PHO, Thailand—Four days after Hamas militants tore through southern Israel, a mournful procession of local officials here in Thailand’s bucolic east came to tell the family of Wichai Kalapat that the 28-year-old fruit farmer was among those killed. His girlfriend, Kittiya Thuengsaeng, hung a picture of him outside her front door. On Saturday, Wichai appeared, Lazarus-like, in footage from a prisoner exchange. Shortly before midnight, his bewildered siblings happened to glimpse him, smiling from the back of a white Red Cross landcruiser, in a picture on Facebook , reluctant to believe it was him until his face appeared on a video call hours later.

Those on trial say that plan was simply part of the pluralistic, oppositional politics that has long been permitted in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong government has repeatedly denied the national security law is suppressing freedoms. They hail from multiple generations and a wide political spectrum - from moderate democrats to those who advocate for Hong Kong’s self-determination. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang offered a glimpse into his unusual management style, including having "50 direct reports," in an interview with CNBC's Andrew Ross Sorkin on Wednesday. Huang says that he has so many direct reports — most executives only have 10 or so — because it keeps Nvidia from developing unnecessary layers of management. "The more direct reports a CEO has, the less layers are in the company. "The people that report to the CEO should require the least amount of pampering and so I don't think they need life advice. I don't think they need career guidance," Huang said.

Ukraine is already racing to catch up with Russia when it comes to electronic warfare. Electronic warfare, or EW, involves weapons or tactics using the electromagnetic spectrum. Pavlo Petrychenko, drone commander with Ukraine’s 59th Motorized Brigade, says destroying Russia's electronic warfare systems is crucial to Ukraine's war effort. Otherwise, there’s a real risk that electronic warfare systems can work against you, downing your own drones, Fedorov added. It’s a future where “electronic warfare capabilities, tactics are integrated into conventional force operations,” she added.

An Israeli Merkava tank manoeuvres near the Israel-Gaza border, amid the temporary truce between Hamas and Israel, as seen from southern Israel, November 28, 2023. "You cannot have the sort of scale of displacement that took place in the north, replicated in the south. The official said the campaign needed to be "deconflicted" from power, water, humanitarian sites and hospitals in south and central Gaza, meaning avoid attacks on those types of infrastructure sites. A second U.S. official said Washington would like to see the humanitarian pause extended as long as possible. The officials said aid deliveries to Gaza were currently running at about 240 truckloads a day but this was nowhere near enough to meet needs.

His face was pale and gaunt, his legs were wrapped in a blanket, and his eyes never seemed to make contact with the family members huddled around him. But on Tuesday, Jimmy Carter was there, in the front row of a church in Atlanta, just a few feet from the coffin holding Rosalynn Carter, his wife of 77 years. Mr. Carter, 99, was some 164 miles from his home in Plains, Ga., where he had been in hospice care since February. He was brought into the church in a wheelchair, as the crowd of mourners at the memorial service looked on, many of them catching their first glimpse of him in nine months. That he would make such a trek in his condition was, to some, shocking — and, to his family, worrisome.

A Red Cross convoy carrying Israeli and foreign hostages heads to Egypt from the Gaza Strip on Sunday. CNN —An innovative experiment flying aboard NASA’s Psyche mission just hit its first major milestone by successfully carrying out the most distant demonstration of laser communications. The tech demo was designed to be the US space agency’s most distant experiment of high-bandwidth laser communications, testing the sending and receiving of data to and from Earth using an invisible near-infrared laser. NASA/JPL-CaltechIt’s not the first time laser communications have been tested in space. The first test of two-way laser communication occurred in December 2021 when NASA’s Laser Communications Relay Demonstration launched and went into orbit about 22,000 miles (35,406 kilometers) from Earth. And the Artemis II spacecraft will use laser communications to return high-definition video of a crewed journey around the moon.

CNN —The James Webb Space Telescope has looked into the heart of the Milky Way galaxy, unveiling new features and mysteries within the chaotic region that could help astronomers unravel more details about the early universe. Astronomers used Webb to glimpse Sagittarius C, or Sgr C, an active region of star formation located about 300 light-years from the galaxy’s central supermassive black hole Sagittarius A*. A light-year, equivalent to 5.88 trillion miles (9.46 trillion kilometers), is how far a beam of light travels in one year. Astronomers are still trying to determine what has created the vast amount of energized gas, which surpasses what would normally be released by young massive stars. “Webb has provided us with a ton of data on this extreme environment, and we are just starting to dig into it.”
