China's foreign exchange regulator said on Friday it will comprehensively use policy measures to stabilize market expectations, at a time when the yuan currency faces renewed downside pressure. China's currency has lost about 4% to the dollar this year, one of the worst performing Asian currencies, pressured by widening yield differentials with the United States and signs of a faltering economic recovery. "In future, the yuan exchange rate has the conditions to maintain basically stable at reasonable and balanced levels," said Wang Chunying, spokeswoman at the State Administration of Foreign Exchange. We will adhere to comprehensive policies, focus on stabilizing expectations, and take different measures based on actual conditions to provide the market with a stable environment and expectations." She said previous rounds of external shocks had equipped regulators with the experience, tools and measures to deal with such situations.

They rose by $12.74 billion from the week earlier - the biggest gain in four months - having risen by a total of $3.08 billion in the prior two weeks. "A major portion of the week-on-week jump in forex reserves is driven by revaluation gains due to dollar weakness and reduction in U.S. Treasury yields," said Gaura Sen Gupta, India economist at IDFC FIRST Bank. The current level of forex reserves, along with the RBI's forward foreign exchange book of $19.3 billion, is enough to cover over 11 months of imports, Reuters' calculations showed. In the week for which the forex reserves data pertains, the rupee had logged its best week in four. KARACHI, Pakistan, July 20 (Reuters) - Pakistan is to proceed with the sale via tender of a contract to manage Islamabad airport after consultations with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the Ministry of Finance said on Thursday. In March Pakistan had kicked off the outsourcing of operations at three major airports and the ministry said Islamabad airport was the first of these to be affected, as the country seeks to generate foreign exchange reserves for its ailing economy. In a statement the ministry said it had been unanimously agreed for the outsourcing of operations at Islamabad airport to go ahead in order to improve service delivery in line with best industry practices. Officials say Pakistan has been in talks with Qatar to jointly run the terminals at Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore airports. The Qatar Investment Authority pledged to invest $3 billion in Pakistan after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif visited Doha late last year.

BHP Group's logo adorning the side of its global headquarters in Melbourne on February 21, 2023. BHP Group on Thursday reported its highest ever annual iron ore production, helped by the continued ramp up at its South Flank operations in Western Australia but flagged it faces rising costs. BHP's iron ore production in Western Australia was aided by improved rail performance at the mines, but production was partially hit by unfavorable impacts from tropical Cyclone Ilsa in the quarter. It said iron ore production from Western Australia, on a 100% basis, was 72.7 million tonnes (Mt) in the three months to June 30, a touch lower than Visible Alpha estimates of 73 Mt, according to UBS. The company expects fiscal 2024 output for Western Australia iron ore between 282 million and 294 million metric tons, the mid-point of which is 0.9% higher than annual production of 285.3 million metric tons for fiscal 2023.

The dismissal of Rohan Ramchandani's civil lawsuit by U.S. District Judge Victor Marrero was disclosed in a docket entry on Thursday in Manhattan federal court. Marrero plans to release his written decision after Citigroup and Ramchandani agree which information should be kept confidential. One year later, Ramchandani sued Citigroup, saying it fired him without cause in January 2014 amid a global probe into foreign exchange price fixing, and then shared false and "gravely derogatory" claims against him with law enforcement. Ramchandani accused Citigroup of entering its plea in part to shift blame away from senior managers and officers. The case is Ramchandani v. Aussie surges after strong jobs data; China's yuan jumps

"Ultimately, it's another strong set of employment figures which keeps the pressure on a data-dependant (Reserve Bank of Australia) to potentially hike rates in August." The offshore yuan last bought 7.1901 per dollar, while the onshore yuan strengthened past 7.18 per dollar to a session-high of 7.1620. RATES OUTLOOKIn the broader currency market, sterling was nursing deep losses after a sharp fall in the previous session following Britain's inflation data, which undershot market expectations. "The market I think is a bit more reasonable now with its expectations for rate hikes by the BoE. "We thought (the fall) was too strong, so it looks like the dollar has regained some of those losses," said CBA's Capurso.

ABUJA, July 20 (Reuters) - Nigeria's naira traded at a record low of 860 per dollar on the black market on Thursday, according to traders, weakening below its official rate a month after the country devalued the currency and ahead of a central bank policy meeting next week. The naira has been swinging widely on the official market since the devaluation. It touched a new low of 853 naira per dollar on Wednesday, according to OTC market regulator, FMDQ Exchange. The currency closed at 742 naira against the dollar on the official market on Thursday, Refinitiv data showed. Dollar shortages on the official market have seen customers turning to the black market, helping to widen the gap between the spot rate and the black market, one trader said.

JOHANNESBURG, July 20 (Reuters) - A BRICS currency will not be on the agenda of the bloc's summit in South Africa next month, but Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa will continue to switch away from the U.S. dollar, South Africa's senior BRICS diplomat said on Thursday. "There's never been talk of a BRICS currency, it's not on the agenda," Anil Sooklal, South Africa's Ambassador at Large: Asia and BRICS, told a media briefing. "What we have said and we continue to deepen is trading in local currencies and settlement in local currencies." This has pushed countries to find alternatives to the dollar, especially among non-U.S. allies. "BRICS started a process that has been expedited as a result of the conflict, as a result of unilateral sanctions," Sooklal said.

Regulator cancels license of FTX's Australian business

July 19 (Reuters) - Australia's securities regulator said on Wednesday it had cancelled the license of the local arm of collapsed U.S. cryptocurrency exchange FTX, effective from July 14. The Australian Securities & Investments Commission (ASIC) had last November suspended the license until May, taking back FTX's permit to deal in derivative and foreign exchange contracts to retail and wholesale clients. FTX Australia can continue to provide limited financial services for terminating existing derivatives with clients until July 12, 2024, the regulator said on Wednesday. The license cancellation has no effect on requirements for FTX Australia to continue as a member of Australian Financial Complaints Authority, and to have arrangements for compensating retail clients, it added. Inflation is falling, with the headline consumer price index (CPI) measure slowing to 3.0% in June from 4.0% in May. The current debate is whether more rate increases might be needed to ensure "disinflation" continues or if doing more could cause unnecessary damage to the economy. Core PCE was last reported at 3.8% for May. But none of the inflation gauges polled by Reuters - CPI, core CPI, PCE and core PCE - were expected to reach 2% until 2025 at the earliest. A slight majority of economists who answered an additional question, 14 of 23, said wage inflation would be the most sticky component of core inflation.

NEW YORK, July 14 (Reuters) - Cooling U.S. inflation is accelerating a decline in the dollar, and risk assets around the world stand to benefit. Because the dollar is a linchpin of the global financial system, a wide range of assets stand to benefit if it continues falling. Raw materials, which are priced in dollars, become more affordable to foreign buyers when the dollar declines. "For markets, the weaker dollar and its underlying driver, weaker inflation, is a balm for everything, especially for assets outside the U.S.," said Alvise Marino, foreign exchange strategist at Credit Suisse. NEW YORK, July 13 (Reuters) - Large companies are spreading out their counterparty risk and increasing screening of their banking partners in response to the recent banking crisis that has been a "wake-up call", according to an industry survey to be released on Thursday. Multinational companies and those with sales overseas use banks, or counterparties to the transactions, to trade foreign exchange and hedge currency risk. "All of a sudden there's a wake-up call," said Eric Huttman, CEO at MillTechFX, the specialist currency arm of Millennium Global. Huttman said his firm has added dozens of clients since the banking crisis and all of them have spent more time asking about its counterparty selection process. The Treasury Department said on Thursday that Andrea Gacki, an architect of the Biden administration’s sanctions program, would become the director of the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network in September. Her appointment is expected to bolster an agency that is central to the U.S. government’s efforts to crack down on money laundering and sanctions evasion, particularly given the number of new penalties imposed in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. That has led to a vast effort by Russia to evade sanctions using shell companies, foreign exchange transactions and other complex financial maneuvers that the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, known as FinCEN, is trying to stop. Ms. Gacki is currently the director of the Office of Foreign Assets Control, a unit within the Treasury Department where she has designed and imposed sanctions on countries such as Iran, North Korea and, most recently, Russia. In her new role at FinCEN, she will be leading another division within the Treasury that is responsible for cracking down on money laundering, cybercrime and sanctions evasion.

Morning Bid: As yields and the yen go, so goes the dollar
  + stars: | 2023-07-11 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Traders in Asia nudged both yields and the dollar a whisker lower on Tuesday, with an eye on Wednesday's U.S. inflation data. Two-year and ten-year Treasury yields are back below 5% and 4%, respectively. The yen is in the driver's seat in foreign exchange markets, as investors pull back on high-yielding bets in emerging markets that have been funded by cheaply borrowed yen. Such trades are placed by selling yen for dollars and then dollars for emerging-market currencies such as the peso or the real, so reversing them requires selling dollars for yen. The yen has risen to the strong side of 141 per dollar for the first time in three weeks.

ISLAMABAD, July 11 (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia has sent $2 billion to Pakistan's central bank, the South Asian nation's finance minister said on Tuesday, another boost for its ailing economy after an IMF bailout. "I thank Saudi Arabia on behalf of the prime minister and army chief," Finance Minister Ishaq Dar said in a recorded video statement. Saudi Arabia pledged the money and then waited for the aid package from the International Monetary Fund to go ahead before depositing it with the State Bank of Pakistan. The financial support will help to shore up the central bank's depleted foreign exchange reserves, which had dipped to cover barely a month of controlled imports. Islamabad secured a last-gasp $3 billion IMF bailout on the last day of June.
