Goldman Sachs thinks it's time to ease exposure to Exxon Mobil after the oil giant's massive multiyear run. The firm downgraded the oil giant's stock from buy to neutral on Monday, with a $125 per share price target, or 5.6% upside compared to Friday's $118.34 close. Goldman Sachs analyst Neil Mehta noted the firm upgraded Exxon in December 2020. That hot run makes Exxon today a less engrossing pick among oil stocks, he said. Still, Goldman remains optimistic on the overall forward outlook on oil prices.
Some companies, including Exxon Mobil Corp (XOM.N), have been dumping assets in the Gulf, the nation's primary offshore source of oil, and are instead targeting capturing and storing carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases underground. The region, soon could became contested ground for oil, carbon sequestration and renewable energy, say analysts. The gain reflects a flurry of new platforms from Shell (SHEL.L), BP (BP.L), Chevron (CVX.N) and others, budgeted before the pandemic hit global demand and made companies reduce investments. Reuters GraphicsAt this week's Offshore Technology Conference (OTC), which annually attracts more than 50,000 people, nearly a quarter of the presentations will involve offshore wind, renewables, carbon capture and energy transition, say organizers. Oil development will still dominate the basin, but should coexist with CCS and renewables such as offshore wind and solar.

Companies Exxon Mobil Corp FollowHOUSTON, May 1 (Reuters) - Exxon Mobil Corp (XOM.N) is not giving up on oil exploration in Brazil, the company's country chief Alberto Ferrin said on Monday during the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) in Houston. "I would say very crystal clear that Exxon Mobil is not quitting exploration in Brazil at all," Ferrin said, disputing a U.S. newspaper report published last month. Brazil's government, regulators and the company's exploration partners are aware it has no intentions of leaving. Exxon is searching for exploration opportunities such as the one it encountered in Guyana, where it has had an 89% success rate, Ferrin said. "Brazil offers those exploration success enablers that we look for globally, no doubt about that.

Signed last week by several environmental analysts from Ibama, the report also recommended the agency stop processing environmental licenses for the block. The oil block, FZA-M-59, was auctioned off by oil regulator ANP to Petrobras in 2013. According to Ibama's report, Petrobras' environmental studies still have "inconsistencies" even after a series of reviews. Petrobras and Ibama did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Another document seen by Reuters showed Werneck Sanchez Basseres, Ibama's environmental licensing coordinator for offshore oil and gas exploration, said he agreed with the report's assessment.
BRASILIA, April 29 (Reuters) - Brazilian state-run oil firm Petrobras (PETR4.SA) said on Saturday that it is awaiting the government's stance on its request to drill a well at the mouth of the Amazon River Basin, following a technical recommendation by the country's environmental agency to reject the proposal. "We're technically ready, waiting for the official position on our drilling campaign in the region," he added. But a technical report from Brazil's environmental agency Ibama has advised against the request, citing discrepancies in environmental studies, inadequate measures for communicating with indigenous communities, and insufficiencies in Petrobras' plan to safeguard the region's wildlife. The technical report will serve as the basis for the environmental agency's ultimate determination on whether or not to authorize activities in the area. Longtime investor and trader Jim Lebenthal said the real opportunities lie outside of the popular tech sector during this earnings season. "The most earnings beats have not been from technology stocks," Lebenthal said Friday. "The biggest beats both in terms of frequency and in terms of size has come from materials, energy and industrials." The investor noted that many stock in these sectors haven't actually responded well to major earnings beats, such as Cleveland-Cliffs , General Motors and Exxon Mobil. That's where the earnings growth is the biggest and that's where the opportunities are the greatest," Lebenthal said.
Exxon burns brighter on Permian and Guyana

NEW YORK, April 28 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Exxon Mobil (XOM.N) burned brighter in the first quarter, thanks to the Permian Basin and Guyana. The $485 billion oil giant earned $11.4 billion, or twice as much as it did the same period a year ago. The first gusher came from Texas, where Exxon pumped 615,000 barrels a day from the shale basin. Last quarter, Exxon took 375,000 barrels a day from offshore, and it has a target capacity of 1.2 million barrels by 2027, 20% more than the Permian. Shale wells quickly deplete, so the company may need to eventually top up in the Permian.
Exxon delivers a record first-quarter profit on higher output

Exxon Mobil on Friday reported a record first-quarter profit that was more than double from a year ago and topped Wall Street estimates as rising oil and gas output overcame a pullback in energy prices from high levels. Oil companies are riding that wave of relatively higher oil and gas prices with earnings benefiting from strong demand and cost-cutting tied to efforts to counter Covid-19 lockdowns three years ago. "We delivered a first-quarter record despite the fact that energy prices and refining margins are softening a bit," Chief Financial Officer Kathryn Mikells said in an interview. Its oil and gas production rose by nearly 300,000 barrels per day (bpd) compared to year-ago levels excluding asset sales and its exit from Russia. Higher volumes partially offset a 16% drop in oil prices from a year ago.

Exxon's net hit $11.4 billion while Chevron earned $6.6 billion and with analysts expecting the strong results to continue this year. Exxon CEO Darren Woods says he is happy to see cash balances rise so the company is well-positioned for a cycle downturn. "The question is obviously when, but that will come," Woods said, after saying he would "expect to see cash balances higher" in times when the markets are on the top end of the cycle. "We don't intend to hold $15-plus billion of cash on our balance sheet," he said, describing too much cash on the books as "economically inefficient for us to hold it, and it is not our cash, it is our shareholders' cash."
