Call Don Draper, Venu Sports may have a marketing problemThe Disney , Fox and Warner Bros. Discovery jointly-owned streaming service said Thursday it will launch this fall at $42.99 per month. That's much more expensive than Netflix , Max, Peacock or any other major subscription streaming service. Venu will give consumers access to a bundle of networks: ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, SECN, ACCN, ESPNEWS, ABC, Fox, FS1, FS2, BTN, TNT, TBS, and truTV. They could also get a digital antenna to pair with Venu, but antenna uptake among younger viewers may be a tad oxymoronic.

What would you pay for a streaming service that gave you lots — but not all — of the biggest sports programming on TV? Most crucially, it won't include lots of NFL games, since the package doesn't include CBS, which has the national rights to AFC games on Sundays. Take the NFL out of traditional TV and there's almost nothing left at this point. If you wanted a streaming service that had all of the NFL games on traditional TV, you'd need a service like YouTube TV, which currently costs $73 a month. That's partly because the TV companies that are part of the bundle kind of believe that, and partly because they have a delicate relationship with pay TV distributors like Comcast.

Venu Sports, the sports streaming joint venture between Disney's ESPN, Warner Bros. The high-end pricing — common in direct-to-consumer sports streaming services — was expected in part so it wouldn't shake up any carriage agreements with traditional pay TV distributors. Live sports remain the highest rated TV programming and are the most costly part of the pay TV bundle. Users who sign up for Venu at $42.99 a month will have access to that entry pricing for 12 months, Venu noted Thursday — signaling there could be price increases ahead. The upcoming bundle will be priced at $16.99 a month with ads, and $29.99 a month ad-free.

Reynolds revealed on an episode of "Hot Ones" that he had once planned to promote an intentionally bad-sounding movie called "Alpha Cop" as a ruse. As Reynolds pointed out on "Hot Ones," marketing a fake movie would help with leaks of what was being cooked up for the next Deadpool movie. "Ryan's idea was, the $100-plus million that studios spend on marketing a big Marvel movie, fuck that, let's do 'Alpha Cop,'" Wernick said. There was even an 'Alpha Cop' poster made. Amazon is raiding TV rivals, including NBCU and Disney, for talent to boost Prime Video ad sales. Prime Video ads launched in January, leveraging sports and scale. Amazon faces challenges integrating video ad sales and sharing viewer data with advertisers. The e-commerce giant started running ads in its Prime Video streaming service in January. That's given Amazon a leg up over established TV players and Netflix, whose ads business has grown slowly for the past two years and has already shaken up its ads leadership twice.

How YouTube Took Over Our Television Screens

Two years ago, YouTube abandoned its audacious plan to beat Hollywood at its own game. So it canceled the shows and fell back on the user-created content that had made it a household name. Now, YouTube consistently ranks as the most popular streaming service on U.S. televisions, surpassing the companies it once tried to emulate. Since Netflix started offering original content in 2012, TV networks have jumped into the streaming race, trying to outflank one another with major upfront investments. Netflix alone spends $17 billion a year on new series and movies as well as on older fare from other companies’ libraries.
