With the data from 2022 in and final, we’ve been poring over the data — including our experiment in Wisconsin — to identify opportunities for improvement. The big Wisconsin mail experiment — where we paid voters up to $25 dollars to take a mail survey — didn’t reveal anything especially alarming about our typical Times/Siena polls. On many measures — gun ownership, evangelical Christianity, vaccination status — the Times/Siena poll looked more conservative than the mail poll. The Wisconsin study did offer ambiguous evidence that Times/Siena phone respondents lean a bit farther to the left than the respondents to the mail survey. We’re reordering our questionnaires to let us look at and potentially use respondents who drop out of a survey early.

Delivering affordable electric vehicles (EVs) has become a priority for car makers worldwide as the shift to cleaner driving has come with high prices, due largely to battery costs. In 2022, Chinese car makers had a 9% share of Europe's EV market, nearly double the previous year's figure, according to forecasts by consultancy Inovev. Tavares said Western car makers needed to use "the same weapons" as their Chinese rivals, sourcing parts in lower cost countries and striking partnerships with battery suppliers that offer the best combination of energy, cost and weight. Once-dominant Western automakers are also striving to regain ground in China itself, the world's largest car market, after losing share to local manufacturers. Mercedes-Benz (MBGn.DE) said on Thursday it was sticking to its strategy and would not engage in a price war to "buy" market share in China.

There are also signs of unease within Israel over moving from one fossil fuel to another. Environmentalists say that the dominance of gas in powering the Israeli economy and the influence of the petroleum industry mean that insufficient resources are going into developing clean energy. “We are hostages in a way,” said Elad Hochman, executive director of Green Course, an advocacy group. As for Chevron, though it does not disclose financial results from its Israeli operations, its executives say it is a profitable business that can be a springboard for expansion. “It is a very nice, attractive position,” Mr. Neff, the Chevron president, said, adding that the company has the opportunity “to grow our business substantially in the next few years.”Gabby Sobelman contributed reporting.

Laura Modi wasn't looking for a reason to quit her job as she walked the aisles of her local pharmacy at 3 a.m. — she just wanted to find something to calm her crying newborn. Instead, hidden between a rack of magazines and discounted bottles of sunscreen, she found a multi-million dollar business idea: organic baby formula. It was 2016, and Modi had given birth to her daughter just five days earlier. In 2017, when Modi's daughter turned one, she decided to quit her job as Airbnb's head of hospitality and set out to create a baby formula with cleaner ingredients. In 2022, Bobbie's revenue topped $84 million, despite last year's nationwide shortage of baby formula, which was triggered by supply chain issues and the discovery of the life-threatening pathogen cronobacter in powdered formulas.

[1/2] Samples of rare earth minerals from left: Cerium oxide, Bastnaesite, Neodymium oxide and Lanthanum carbonate at Molycorp's Mountain Pass Rare Earth facility in Mountain Pass, California June 29, 2015. Its rare earths production jumped to 4,300 tonnes last year from 400 tonnes in 2021, the USGS said. Vietnam will develop three to four new mines after 2030, aiming to raise its raw rare earths output to 2.11 million tonnes by 2050, the document showed. "The objective of the plan is for the country to develop a synchronised and sustainable industry of rare earths mining and processing," it said. Rare earths are a group of elements that have applications in electronics manufacturing and batteries, making them important for the global transition towards cleaner sources of energy and in defence.

There's no need to identify the country, all you need to do is control the item," a Japanese industry ministry official told Reuters. Two of them, deposition machinery maker Kokusai Electric and Japan's leading chip tool maker Tokyo Electron (8035.T), said they expect Japan's controls to have a limited business impact. COORDINATIONDovetailing Japan's controls with those of the U.S. and the Netherlands will require close coordination. He has met with Japanese trade officials and believes Tokyo is committed to curbing certain exports. Tokyo remains worried that targeting China will provoke damaging retaliation, such as a ban on Japanese electric cars, a third Japanese industry official said.

A brewery in California is using recycled wastewater to make beer, the New York Times reports. The company is using technology designed by NASA for astronauts to recycle water in space. Recycled wastewater tends to actually be cleaner than the water breweries can get on-site, multiple brewery owners told the Times. Last year, Stanford professor William Mitch published a study showing that wastewater recycled using reverse osmosis resulted in a product as clean as groundwater, sometimes even more so. Just last month, NASA reported that scientists on the International Space Station had successfully recycled 98% of their wastewater for the first time.

Philadelphia locals are divided over a crackdown that could remove 85% of Airbnb and Vrbo listings. A local Airbnb host said it's unfair and doesn't support it, even if it means less competition. The move could eliminate 85% of short-term rentals, or nearly 1,700 pads, according to the city's own estimate. It's a tiny window that seems unfair, local host Rob Brown told Insider. As a local, she's also experienced disturbances with short-term rentals in the area.

The world’s advanced economies have committed to phasing out coal over the next seven years. But not Japan, which stands alone in insisting it can make coal less damaging to the planet. Nowhere is that more evident than at the nation’s largest coal-fired power plant in Hekinan, a small city in central Japan where 400,000 tons of jet-black piles are spread across a plot the size of 40 soccer fields. Starting next spring, Jera, the company that owns the site, wants to demonstrate that it can blend ammonia — which does not emit carbon dioxide when burned — with coal in its boilers. The use of this new technology is prompting a debate over whether it is better to find cleaner ways of using coal, or to scrap it as soon as possible in favor of renewable energy.

BlackRock named Aramco CEO Amin Nasser to its board Monday. Nasser leads the world's largest oil producer, which is mainly owned by the Saudi Arabian state. Its decision to name Aramco CEO Amin Nasser to its board Monday provides further ammunition for those critics, signaling that the firm might not be as socially conscious as it says it is. That is the wrong player here, unless [BlackRock CEO] Larry Fink really wants to blur their image on the ESG front," Jeffrey Sonnenfeld, the Yale professor and management expert, said on CNBC Tuesday. Some users told the Journal they prefer Apple Maps over Google Maps for its design and usability. Rabinowitz mow finds that Apple Maps offers public transit directions that are faster and more creative than those from Google Maps, the Journal reported. Apple Maps, he said, also takes into consideration commuting disruptions like subway outages better than its competitor does. She has since begun choosing it over from Google Maps, as she says Apple Maps has a more clear and legible display. Google Maps, he said, might be better for those who want to use their personal data to inform what information gets displayed.

BRUSSELS, July 19 (Reuters) - EU antitrust regulators have extended their deadline for a decision on Amazon's (AMZN.O) $1.7 billion acquisition of robot vacuum cleaner maker iRobot (IRBT.O) to Dec. 13 after the companies requested more time. "The deadline for the (European) Commission to take a decision has been extended by additional 20 working days in agreement with the notifying party," the EU competition enforcer said in a statement. Companies can ask for an extension of up to 20 working days. The EU watchdog earlier this month warned that the deal may reduce competition in robot vacuum cleaners and also reinforce Amazon's position as an online marketplace provider. The impact of the climate crisis is now affecting people every day, with record temperatures seen globally and extreme weather events becoming increasingly common. Florent Berard, Schneider ElectricThe stakes could not be higher, Berard said, as the world is at an "inflection point." To mitigate the worst effects of the climate crisis, Berard said it's important to look at how we drive the right behaviors. Visualized on a smartphone, the intelligent panel provides invaluable insights into a home's real-time energy consumption. This means a net-zero built environment must be a marriage of the past and present, combining sustainable design and sensitive retrofits with smart digital solutions.

But now a tantalizing possibility is emerging: Can America both tame inflation and keep its labor market gains? Data last week showed that price increases are beginning to moderate in earnest, and that trend is expected to continue in the months ahead. Housing costs are slowing in inflation measures, something that economists have expected for months and that they widely predict will continue. New and used car prices are cooling as demand wanes and inventories on dealer lots improve, allowing goods prices to moderate. And even services inflation has cooled somewhat, though some of that owed to a slowdown in airfares that may look less significant in coming months.

Natural gas, long seen as a cleaner alternative to coal and an important tool in the fight to slow global warming, can be just as harmful to the climate, a new study has concluded, unless companies can all but eliminate the leaks that plague its use. It takes as little as 0.2 percent of gas to leak to make natural gas as big a driver of climate change as coal, the study found. That’s a tiny margin of error for a gas that is notorious for leaking from drill sites, processing plants and the pipes that transport it into power stations or homes and kitchens. The bottom line: If gas leaks, even a little, “it’s as bad as coal,” said Deborah Gordon, the lead researcher and an environmental policy expert at Brown University and at the Rocky Mountain Institute, a nonprofit research organization focused on clean energy. “It can’t be considered a good bridge, or substitute.”The peer-reviewed study, which also involved researchers from Harvard and Duke Universities and NASA and is set to be published next week in the journal Environmental Research Letters, adds to a substantial body of research that has poked holes in the idea that natural gas is a suitable transitional fuel to a future powered entirely by renewables, like solar and wind.

Clothing repairs are favored by sustainability advocates, but they can be expensive. Beginning in October, the country's government will give a 7 euros, or about $7.79, discount for heel repairs and between €10 and €25 for clothing repairs, Le Monde first reported. Sustainability advocates favor clothing repairs as one way to slow the climate crisis and create a circular economy, in which we reuse existing resources and reduce waste. The organization found that the repairs can be expensive — stains cost an average of $17.34 to remove and other repairs cost up to $34. In April, the government doubled-down on discounts for citizens who repaired their home appliances instead of throwing them away.
