I don't know if that's a newsflash for anybody here," Republican Representative Scott Perry said. Republican Representative Jodey Arrington, who has been floated as an alternative, said he was backing Jordan for now. That plan would give more authority to Republican Representative Patrick McHenry, who is filling the speaker's chair on a temporary basis. House Democrats and the White House have said they are open to the idea, but Republicans rejected it on Thursday. He helped to engineer government shutdowns in 2013 and 2018 and helped to push Republican Speaker John Boehner into retirement in 2015.

Israel on Friday ordered the evacuation of more than 20,000 residents from Kiryat Shmona, one of the biggest towns on its northern border following a heavy cross-border exchange of fire in the area the day before. Survival was uppermost in the minds of Lebanese civilians from the Lebanese village of Dhayra, west of Israel's Kiryat Shmona. Nissim Tsabaria, an elderly Israeli who walks with a stick, waved goodbye to neighbours as he clambered into his car. Local authorities on both sides of the border are hastily seeking accommodation for the growing numbers of refugees, who leave their homes in cars crammed with suitcases. US Republican Representative from Ohio Jim Jordan speaks during a press conference at the US Capitol in Washington, DC, on October 19, 2023. He alluded to the 15 rounds of voting that former Speaker Kevin McCarthy needed before securing the gavel. "There's been multiple rounds of votes for speaker before — we all know that," Jordan told reporters at a press conference Friday morning, before the vote. "End the attachment to the extremist Jim Jordan and join with Democrats in finding a bipartisan path forward," Jeffries told reporters. CNN —Republican Rep. Jim Jordan is pressing ahead with his speaker bid despite facing stiff opposition from within his own party and no clear path to win the gavel. In a news conference Friday morning, Jordan made it clear he has no plans to abandon his bid. We can’t open the House until we get a speaker,” Jordan said. Some Republicans who oppose Jordan have decried what they described as a pressure campaign against them by allies of the Ohio Republican. There was also an emotional discussion over the threats some Jordan holdouts are facing.

[1/3] A man assists his elderly father to get into a car so that he can be evacuated from Kiryat Shmona, near Israel's border with Lebanon, in northern Israel, October 20, 2023. Survival was uppermost in the minds of Lebanese civilians from the Lebanese village of Dhayra, west of Israel's Kiryat Shmona. The House of Representatives remained leaderless on Thursday without a clear path to elect a speaker after Rep. Jim Jordan's bid to secure the gavel failed in two consecutive votes this week. Jordan has said he plans to remain in the speaker race, but his bid appears dead in the water with more than 20 Republicans opposed to him assuming leadership of the chamber. Jordan has said he will remain in the race "until we get a speaker." Republicans have a narrow majority in the House, which means Jordan or any other GOP candidate can only afford to lose four votes within the party. There is discussion among some Republicans about empowering Rep. Patrick McHenry of North Carolina as speaker until the party can coalesce around a permanent replacement.

The $15.50 per month price for Netflix's most popular streaming option in the U.S. will remain unchanged, as will a $7 monthly plan that includes intermittent commercials. The increase left Netflix with about 247 million worldwide subscribers, well above the 243.8 million projected by analysts surveyed by FactSet Research. Netflix has picked up more than 16 million subscribers through the first nine months of the year, already eclipsing the 8.9 million subscribers that it added all of last year. The crackdown also has boosted Netflix’s in another way – current subscribers can share their accounts with someone living outside their households by paying higher monthly fees. The higher prices for Netflix's premium plans also seems likely to divert more subscribers into the ad-supported option.

Following the NSC's appeal, Israeli airlines arranged flights from Istanbul late on Wednesday for Israelis who want to leave Turkey. Protesters held fresh demonstrations near consulates of Israel and the United States in Istanbul on Wednesday evening. The U.S. House of Representatives gaveled into session Tuesday to vote on whether Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, will become its next speaker. The vote on Jordan's candidacy is scheduled to begin around 12:30 p.m. The deeply divided Republican conference has so far been unable to coalesce around a candidate for speaker after McCarthy's ouster. Jordan has said he wants the House to keep voting Tuesday until it chooses a speaker, suggesting Jordan intends to wear down his opposition on the House floor. The House has been leaderless for two weeks after a faction of eight Republicans led by Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida ousted McCarthy in an unprecedented no-confidence vote.

Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians who heeded the Israeli military’s order to evacuate portions of the Gaza Strip are confronting deadly airstrikes from Israeli warplanes even after they’ve moved. And a grim question hung over the enclave on Tuesday: Was there anywhere safe to go? Last week, after the deadly Oct. 7 cross-border attacks by Hamas, Israel ordered all of Gaza’s northern residents — some 1.1 million people — to abandon their homes ahead of an expected ground invasion of the strip and to head south. Hundreds of thousands obeyed, leaving by car, motorcycle and even on foot. He added that southern Gaza was relatively safer than the north, but not entirely safe.

Good liars aren't nervous about manipulating others; rather, they are confident, dominant and relaxed as they exploit others. Whether expressing happiness, surprise, sadness or contempt, good liars can wrinkle their brows, raise their eyebrows, or bare their teeth in convincing ways that belie their true emotions. Effective liars say enough to be believed, but no more. To avoid sounding dishonest, good liars avoid this reconstruction-on-the-fly strategy of storytelling. A new study showed that mammals in the savanna are more scared of human voices than lions growls. The scientists discovered this by playing sounds from humans, lions, and birds from hidden speakers. They'd then play the sounds of humans, lions, dogs, gunshots, or birds, and record the animals' reactions. Naturally then, the hypothesis is that prey animals would fear humans much more than any other animal. But this is the first study to establish that fear of humans exists in species across the savanna, Zanette said.

US grand strategy can prop up the global order

But the United States can prevent the rules-based order from collapsing if it keeps steering a steady course with regards to Russia and China. If the United States holds firm on its grand strategy, any new geopolitical risks should be similarly contained. One explanation for the current outbreak of crises is that the United States is weaker and more internally divided than it was during the so-called “Pax Americana” era. It could easily drop down the United States’ list of priorities, says Michel Duclos, a former French diplomat who is a fellow at the Paris-based Institut Montaigne. He will struggle to unite the U.S.’s allies as he is not a champion of either the NATO military alliance or the rules-based global order.

At the same time, the major price cuts continue as Musk's primary strategy to drum up more interest in Teslas. Overall, the price cuts over the past year have shaved revenue by much more, Ives estimated. In effect, Black argues that Tesla price cuts are a de facto marketing expense, saying Tesla's share losses among EVs by Tesla this year suggest price cuts alone aren't working.

But Jordan, who chairs the House Judiciary Committee, faced skepticism from those who were angry that his supporters had failed to unite behind Scalise. “If we, as Republicans, are going to be the majority, we have to do the right things the right way. Party lawmakers were due to hear from candidates Republicans at 1 p.m. Hardline conservative Jim Jordan said he would seek the gavel, after narrowly losing to Scalise in a nominating vote on Wednesday. But he faced skepticism from Scalise allies, who were angry that lawmakers had failed to unite behind his bid. A successful candidate would need to secure 217 votes from the splintered 221-212 Republican majority to win the job. Republicans considered and rejected a rule that would require any nominee to lock up 217 of their votes before moving to a public vote on the House floor.

By Sam Tobin and Michael HoldenLONDON (Reuters) - Britain's Supreme Court said on Wednesday it would be a couple of months before it gives its decision on whether the government could go ahead with its plan to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda. Raza Husain, a lawyer representing eight asylum seekers, said those sent there were at risk of being returned to their home countries despite having valid asylum claims. He also argued asylum seekers faced inhuman or degrading treatment within Rwanda. The United Nations' refugee agency also intervened in the appeal, with its lawyers reiterating its "unequivocal warning against the transfer of asylum seekers to Rwanda". The Rwanda plan, struck by then Prime Minister Boris Johnson in April 2022, was designed to deter asylum seekers from making the dangerous journey across the Channel from Europe.

It's the fourth time Chipotle has raised prices in the last two years. The increase meant some customers would pay more than $1 more for their entrees once the price increase took effect in August of the same year. Months before that, in the first quarter of 2022, Chipotle raised its prices by 4%. And Chipotle lovers sounded off in the comment section of a viral TikTok on "the downfall of Chipotle" in July.
