JD Vance speaks at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, on July 17. Will Lanzoni/CNNMany of America’s closest allies were already dreading the prospect of Donald Trump’s return to the White House. Now that the former president has picked JD Vance as his running mate, they potentially have a lot more to worry about. By choosing Vance, Trump has sent a clear signal that, if elected, his America-first foreign policy will be back in force. His nomination puts an end to the hopes by some of America’s allies that Trump might soften his foreign policy stance if reelected.

Germany to slash military aid budget in blow to Ukraine

Around 5.4 billion euros had been allocated to the fund in 2023, the budget outline shows. In recent years, large amounts of this section of the German budget has been allocated to support Ukraine following Russia's attack of the country. It also noted that Germany would continue to support Ukraine for as long as needed, in collaboration with its allies. The government had planned to re-allocate unused emergency debt, which was taken on during the Covid-19 pandemic, to its future spending plans. The German parliament will debate the draft budget when it returns from its summer break in September before it is finalized later in the year.

Former President Donald Trump recounted the assassination attempt that nearly killed him during his Republican National Convention acceptance speech in Milwaukee on Thursday night. "I'm not supposed to be here tonight," said a somber Trump, with a bandage covering his right ear, which was nicked by a bullet. Trump also expressed his "gratitude to the American people for your outpouring of love and support following the assassination attempt." Vance, the Republicans’ vice-presidential nominee, has embraced a vision to lift the American working class with policies that would break radically with Republican economic orthodoxy, and at times with former President Donald J. Trump’s own plans. Now he faces questions from left-leaning and right-leaning economists on whether it would actually work. The broad vision, laid out in the Ohio senator’s acceptance speech on Wednesday night and through interviews and detailed somewhat in the truncated Republican platform, seeks to raise wages and restore American manufacturing in two basic ways: impose across-the-board tariffs on all imports to favor American-made products, and reduce downward pressure on wages by deporting millions of undocumented immigrants and narrowing the path into the country for legal immigrants. Meantime, the Republican platform, adopted just ahead of the convention, pledges to end inflation, increase energy production, stop sending manufacturing jobs overseas, cut taxes for workers and corporations, keep the dollar the world’s reserve currency and protect the largest domestic programs, Social Security and Medicare, from any cuts.

Vance’s Republican National Convention speech capped a night Republicans spent prosecuting what they see as President Joe Biden’s biggest foreign policy failures and their consequences. Republicans used Wednesday night to introduce Vance and his life story to the nation. You owe President Trump answers!” Tennessee Sen. Marsha Blackburn shouted at Cheatle, who continued to walk with her head down and ignore the senators’ criticism. Energy security and energy policy are in the governor’s comfort zone and that was on full display Wednesday night. When Trump finally did call Burgum, the former president told Burgum he would not be his running mate.

Vance was swift to name China the “biggest threat to our country,” in an interview with Fox News Monday as the RNC got underway. He’s made countering what Washington says is a security threat from China a cornerstone of his foreign policy, even as he’s worked to stabilize communications with Beijing. And Beijing – which is grappling with its own economic woes – may be preparing for more friction if Trump takes office. The substance of Biden’s China policy – in terms of sanctions, tariffs and competition – has not been that different from Trump’s, she noted, and Biden has been keener on strengthening alliances and coalitions to counter China together. “But the style of Biden’s China policy is more predictable and stabilizing.

To reread "Hillbilly Elegy" now, as I did this week, is to feel a sense of disorientation. JD Vance the author sounds a lot different than JD Vance the politician. Personally, I first read "Hillbilly Elegy" in college, in an earnest if somewhat contrived attempt to better understand communities unlike mine. On stage, he recounted a story that also appears in "Hillbilly Elegy," where Mamaw bluntly threatens violence against one of Vance's friends. There are hints of this in "Hillbilly Elegy" as well: He served as a public affairs Marine, where he was trained in the art of media relations, including "how stay on message."

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump couldn't be farther apart when it comes to climate action. Trump and his pick for vice president, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio, are both climate deniers. By contrast, the Democrats unveiled a platform that said it would build on the Biden administration's unprecedented spending on renewable energy and the green workforce while cracking down on the oil-and-gas industry. The center conducted the survey with the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication. Much has been made of the political pirouette J.D. Vance executed to secure the embrace of Donald J. Trump, a man he once called “cultural heroin” before seeking his endorsement for the Senate and, Wednesday night, accepting the Republican nomination to be his vice president. Old friends and former classmates have expressed bewilderment at the seemingly irreconcilable versions of Mr. Vance. Mr. Vance used his personal account of overcoming dysfunctional Appalachian family values to tell a larger story about forgotten Americans. In his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, he leaned again into those themes, at one point drawing attention to his mother, “who struggled with money and addiction but never gave up.” She stood in the audience when he continued, “And I’m proud to say that tonight my mom is here, 10 years clean and sober.”

BEIJING — U.S. presidential hopeful Donald Trump's new running mate JD Vance stuck to a hard line on China in his first speech since being selected earlier in the week. "Together we will protect the wages of American workers and stop the Chinese Communist Party from building their middle class on the backs of American citizens," Vance said on the third night of the Republican National Convention. He also called for more factories in the U.S. and restrictions on foreign workers, but did not name specific actions. As the current Ohio Senator, Vance proposed in September a legislation for promoting gas and hybrid-powered cars made in the U.S. and canceling electric car subsidies. The ruling Communist Party of China has been increasingly focused on developing advanced manufacturing and said one of its goals for the year 2035 is to "substantially grow the middle-income group as a share of the total population."

Read previewSen. JD Vance of Ohio on Wednesday railed against decades of American policy in his major national moment as the Republican vice presidential nominee. Like former President Donald Trump, Vance underlined a populist Republican Party to the point that he came out to a Merle Haggard hit that was written in protest of the war in Iraq. In selecting Vance, Trump eschewed the traditional considerations in finding a running mate. "He chose to endure abuse, slander, and persecution, and he did it because he loves this country," Vance said. Reuters —Germany plans to halve its military aid to Ukraine next year, despite concerns that US support for Kyiv could potentially diminish if Republican candidate Donald Trump returns to the White House. German aid to Ukraine will be cut to €4 billion ($4.35 billion) in 2025 from around €8 billion in 2024, according to a draft of the 2025 budget seen by Reuters. Germany has faced criticism for repeatedly missing a NATO target of spending 2% of its economic output on defense. Days after Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced a “Zeitenwende” – German for historic turning point - with a €100 billion special fund to bring the military up to speed. The defense budget is set to receive a meagre €1.3 billion more than in 2024, far below the €6.7 billion requested by Pistorius.
