On television, CNN drew 8.7 million viewers on its flagship channel, including 3 million in the advertiser coveted 25-54 demographic, the network said Friday. The right-wing talk channel Fox News drew 8.8 million viewers, ABC News saw 8.7 million viewers and MSNBC drew 3.968 million viewers. The nearly 48 million who watched Thursday night’s debate on television represents a 35% drop in audience from 2020, when more than 73 million people watched the first debate between Trump and Biden across all television networks. CNN —The confrontation in Atlanta between Joe Biden and Donald Trump Thursday night has a good chance of becoming the most fateful presidential debate in US history. The momentous nature of this debate can only be fully understood against the backdrop of the unprecedented politics of the times. But the tension surrounding this year’s first debate in June, rather than in September or October as usual, is palpable. “The closer the election, the greater the chance that a debate could influence it,” said Aaron Kall, director of debate at the University of Michigan, who has conducted an in-depth study of every presidential debate. Biden has raised the stakes for himself heading into the debate higher than those any modern president faced.

CNN, which will host the first of two debates between President Biden and Donald Trump, is doing its best to gin up the old excitement, but the general feeling is one of unease. Time labels it “the dread election.” Across a wide range of backgrounds and beliefs, Americans describe themselves in similar terms: exhausted, indifferent, depressed. A recently categorized voter, the “double hater,” is the star of a report that identifies Mr. Biden and Mr. Trump as the most disliked pair of presidential candidates in at least 36 years — twice as disliked, in fact, as they were in 2020. In an election this close, if the debates make even a small difference, they could make all the difference. This is why Mr. Biden pressed so hard for an early debate.

In a more defensive environment, we instead gravitate to lower volatility, higher dividend-paying stocks. By October, AT & T had pounded out a series of higher lows, confirming a rotation to a bullish trend. As a long-term trend gauge, I would assume that any price action above this trendline is still within the context of a bullish phase. I've also drawn a short-term trendline in pink, lining up the price lows in April, May, and June. Since an uptrend is formed by a pattern of higher highs and higher lows, then a consistent short-term uptrend would most likely remain above this trendline.

On Wednesday, Nike traded more than two times its average daily options volume. The most active call options were the September 100 calls, 8,000 of which traded at an average price of around $3.22. Declining sales (inflation-adjusted) and market share, leading to declining investor confidence, explain the lower-than-average historical multiple.
