Disinflation — not inflation — will be a key driving force in the economy this year, according to Jefferies. Therefore, investors can find winners this year by looking at the stocks with a positive correlation to inflation cooling down. Jefferies looked at changes in inflation expectations and which equities had the highest correlation to those changes. So Jefferies reasons that these stocks will have the most to gain this year as disinflation takes over. Jefferies gave clients a list of names it believes are quality stocks trading at reasonable prices.
Procter & Gamble Is No Bargain

Procter & Gamble posted underwhelming results on Thursday that, while far from disastrous, provide no reason for optimism on its stock. The maker of Oral B toothbrushes and Bounty paper towels said sales in its second quarter ended in December fell 1% from a year earlier. On an organic basis, stripping out currency fluctuations, sales were up 5%. But that obscures some underlying weakness: Volumes fell across all of its categories, meaning the top line was salvaged through price increases.

After lifting prices to new heights, Procter & Gamble Co. reported lower quarterly profit and declining sales volumes as the rising costs of Tide detergent and other staples prompted consumers to cut back on purchases at the end of 2022. Sales volumes fell 6% at P&G —the biggest quarterly drop in years—with declines at each of the company’s five major business units in the three months ended Dec. 31 compared with a year earlier. P&G increased prices by 10% in the period, helping the company report a 5% boost in organic sales, which exclude currency swings and acquisitions.

The Labor Department's report showed a surprise fall in U.S. weekly jobless claims, highlighting labor market resilience in a higher interest rate environment. "There's virtually no signs of any weakness in the labor market and that's one of the things the Fed's been leaning against to keep rates higher for longer." The S&P 500 (.SPX) and the Dow Jones Industrial Average (.DJI) are now headed for their third straight day of declines. P&G raises sales forecast on price hikes, sees volumes fall

Jan 19 (Reuters) - Tide detergent maker Procter & Gamble Co (PG.N) raised its full-year sales forecast on Thursday and said it plans to continue raising prices despite a drop in sales volumes, warning that high commodity costs were pressuring profits. While the price hikes have been met with less pushback compared to discretionary products, customers have still bought fewer of its products. P&G said organic sales in China, its second largest market, were down 7% due to COVID lockdowns and weaker consumer confidence. P&G said net sales fell 1% to $20.77 billion in the quarter, hurt by the impact of a stronger dollar on overseas revenue but beating Wall Street expectations. It's the first fall in quarterly net sales in a little over five years, according to Refinitiv data.
Some companies, such as P&G, have introduced programs to recruit and retain neurodivergent candidates. Lakes' experience is not uncommon among neurodivergent individuals, which is a term that represents people with neurological types like autism, dyslexia, or ADHD. Workplace culture is beginning to shiftThere's some change on the horizon. "Right now, organizations are doing the groundwork," Lyric Rivera, who identifies as neurodivergent, told Insider. Company culture can support neurodivergent employeesWhile many companies offer programs to support existing neurodivergent employees, advocates like Rivera say the next step is to get more neurodivergent candidates in the door.
Procter & Gamble reported year-over-year declines in revenue and profit on Thursday, as higher prices struggled to offset declining sales volumes. All of the company's divisions reported declining sales volume in the quarter, despite seeing increases in organic sales as a result of higher pricing. P&G executives noted in a call with media that consumer demand is responsible for at least half the 6% sales volume decrease. But it warned those headwinds would continue to squeeze P&G's gross margins, which saw a 160-basis-point decrease during the second quarter versus a year ago. P&G is doubling down on its price hiking strategy even as shrinking consumer demand continues to erode sales volume.
Club holding Procter & Gamble (PG) reported fiscal second-quarter results largely in line with expectations before the opening bell Wednesday. During the December quarter, management returned roughly $4.2 billion to investors via $2 billion share repurchases and another $2.2 billion via dividends. Guidance Management raised their fiscal year 2023 sales guidance, now expecting sales to be in a range of down 1% to in-line. On the bottom line, management reaffirmed EPS guidance to be in line to up 4% versus fiscal 2022 earnings of $5.81 per share, better than the 0.3% growth the Street has been modeling. We made a table (see above) of the reported numbers versus estimates and how each line item compares to the year-ago quarter and the prior fiscal quarter.
Weak economic data is threatening the soft landing thesis. Is the soft landing narrative really changing, or was Wednesday's retail sales and industrial production reports — both well below expectations — an outlier event? Bears are seizing on this to assert that the Federal Reserve has already done so much that they have made a soft landing less likely. The problem: organic sales growth of 5% was entirely achieved by a 10% boost in prices during the quarter. Procter & Gamble (ex-currency) Organic sales: up 5% Price: up 10% Volume: down 6% The recipe for margin pressure is the consumer pushing back against price increases.
Club holding Procter & Gamble (PG): earnings-per-share in fiscal second quarter of 2023 of $1.59 matches estimates; revenue of $20.77 billion slightly beats. Club holding Apple (AAPL) has been holding in at roughly 22x forward earnings estimates compared to the S & P 500's 17.5x multiple. "I just think we need to keep going," Cleveland Fed President Loretta Mester said. And many forecasters are now wary the Fed will err on the side of tighter policy to ensure inflation is slayed. Markets wobbled on the prospect on Wednesday, with the S&P500 (.SPX) staging its biggest decline of the year so far. At 3.32%, 10-year U.S. Treasury yields fell to their lowest since September. An activist investor like Trian Partners' Nelson Peltz on Walt Disney 's (DIS) board could help prod the entertainment conglomerate to address its financial woes and implement much-needed changes to create long-term value for the company and its shareholders. "Lots of angry people ask me why I support Nelson Peltz for the Disney board, and I give a simple answer: What has this board done for its shareholders other than wipe out more shareholder money?" Nonetheless, Disney's board unanimously decided against offering Peltz a seat, according to an SEC filing the company submitted Tuesday. Peltz, whose next step in his fight is to convince voting Disney shareholders he deserves a board seat, has had success serving on several company boards. Wall Street has had a mixed reaction to Peltz's efforts to obtain a board seat.
Ulta Beauty Hires New Marketing Chief

Beauty retailer Ulta Beauty Inc. has tapped Michelle Crossan-Matos, a former Samsung Electronics America marketing leader, as its new chief marketing officer. The chief marketing officer role was previously held by Shelley Haus, who died of cancer last June. Most recently, Ms. Crossan-Matos was chief marketing, citizenship and communications officer at Samsung Electronics America. “I think beauty care is probably going to be one of the most resilient categories, and then I think Ulta Beauty will be even more resilient, just because of the portfolio that Ulta Beauty has and the type of guests that come in—they tend to be much more resilient,” Ms. Crossan-Matos said. Ulta will stay focused on social media, video, beauty tutorials and experience-based marketing in the year ahead, said Ms. Crossan-Matos.

Disney directors unanimously rejected activist investor Nelson Peltz's request to join the board this month, in large part due to his lack of media industry expertise. That would be a stronger argument if Disney's current board members had ample media and entertainment experience when they joined. Peltz's strongest claim for a board seat is probably ensuring that succession planning finally happens in an organized and coherent way – which doesn't appear to be the primary argument he's making. According to a company filing Tuesday, Disney decided not to offer Peltz a board seat because he didn't suggest any specific strategic ideas and had minimal industry experience. But Disney's board is filled with directors whose prior experience have little to do with streaming services, legacy pay TV, theme parks or films.
Now's the time to snap up shares of Church & Dwight as the consumer goods maker is set to gain after a dismal 2022, according to Morgan Stanley. The firm on Monday upgraded the stock to overweight from equal weight and boosted its price target to $91 from $82. But, the firm expects a "sharp fundamental turn in 2023 to above-consensus organic sales and GM results," Mohsenian wrote. Morgan Stanley now expects robust second-half organic sales growth of 6.4%, solidly outperforming 2022 and moving ahead of its peers. Morgan Stanley is lowering its earnings per share estimates to be more in-line with consensus, but wouldn't be surprised to see upside in the second half of the year.
