People walk past an Apple store in the Americana at Brand shopping center on December 26, 2023 in Glendale, California. Apple Intelligence — the collective brandname for all of Apple’s own AI tools — is intended to be more of a personal assistant than anything else. What about your data: Since Apple Intelligence and ChatGPT will be used for largely different purposes, the amount and type of information users send to each AI may be different, too. While Apple users will have to send their personal information and AI queries to OpenAI if they want to use ChatGPT, Apple has said that most of the time Apple Intelligence won’t be sending user data anywhere. As much as possible, Apple will try to process AI prompts directly on your device using smaller AI models.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Jury selection was scheduled to begin Monday in the federal trial of three former Memphis officers charged with violating the civil rights of Tyre Nichols, the 29-year-old man whose fatal beating was caught on police cameras while also triggering protests and calls for police reform. Officers caught up with Nichols and pummeled him in a Memphis neighborhood, police video showed. An autopsy report showed Nichols died from blows to the head and that the manner of death was homicide. The three officers now facing trial, along with Emmitt Martin III and Desmond Mills Jr., were fired after Nichols’ death for violating Memphis Police Department policies. Mills and Martin both have pleaded guilty in federal court and they could testify in the trial.

A shutdown would close federal agencies and national parks, while limiting public services and furloughing millions of workers just weeks before the election. House Republicans have now settled on some lines of attack, which they'll highlight in politically charged GOP hearings and investigations into both Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. House GOP probesAfter spending much of the 118th Congress focused on investigating Biden, House Republicans are now shifting their focus to Democrats’ new presidential ticket. Republicans are also focusing on the botched U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, which the Trump campaign has criticized Harris over. This fuel is set to power the next generation of America’s nuclear reactors — small, modular power stations that are easier and cheaper to build. They require far less upkeep and physical space than the aging fleet of large nuclear power plants. “In order to meet our energy security needs and our climate goals, we do need significantly more nuclear energy deployed.”The nuclear power industry is increasingly looking to smaller reactors, which run on HALEU. The uranium for conventional reactors is enriched up to 5% and HALEU is uranium enriched between 5-20%. Highly enriched uranium is anything more than 20% and is used in weapons or naval submarines.

The DOJ and the states are seeking a breakup of Google's adtech business. Separately, they said that while a separation of Google's ad server and its ad exchange would be good for competition in the adtech market, it might drive ad server costs up for publishers. Google's ad server is "a loss leader, they make all their money in AdX," the exec said, referring to Google's ad exchange that connects buyers and sellers. CNN —The Trump campaign may be “goin’ to Wichita” before the November election, but The White Stripes would prefer former President Donald Trump stop traveling with their music as part of his playlist. The two artists stopped performing together as The White Stripes in 2011. Last month, Jack White said he would seek legal action after Margo Martin, a deputy director of communications for the Trump campaign, shared on social media a since-deleted video of Trump boarding a plane with “Seven Nation Army” playing. Billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates has spent the past couple decades warning the general public about ominous issues, from upcoming "climate disasters" to devastating cyberattacks. "A lot of unrest" in today's world could spark "a major war," he tells CNBC Make It. And even "if we avoid a big war ... then, yes, there will be another pandemic, most likely in the next 25 years." "The country that the world expected to lead and be the model fell short of those expectations," Gates says, referring to the United States. While some progress has been made, with increased spending on pandemic preparedness in the U.S. and elsewhere, Gates says the global response hasn't yet been enough.

London CNN —Local governments across England, Scotland and Wales face a £4.3 billion ($5.6 billion) hole in their finances in the coming year, according to a new report. Many of Britain’s local governments have faced chronic funding shortfalls over the past decade, partly as a result of deep cuts to funds from the central government in the 2010s. “Councils are teetering on the brink of financial disaster,” Unison general secretary Christina McAnea said in a statement. The number of public toilets dropped by 1,629 over the same period, and the number of council-run libraries fell by 1,376, according to Unison. Giving examples of further cuts to come, Unison said Shropshire Council in the West Midlands region of England plans to slashup to 540 jobs.

Dow gets a 500-point boost

The Dow rose 484 points, or 1.2%, on Monday. At one point earlier in the afternoon, the Dow was up more than 600 points. This week, investors will get another look at US inflation data, starting Wednesday morning with the Consumer Price Index report. The Fed has kept interest rates high to bring price hikes under control. Because consumer spending makes up the vast majority of America’s economy, the Fed almost always plunges the economy into a recession when it hikes rates — although that’s obviously not the goal.

CNN —Authorities in Madrid have announced that they will revoke the operating licenses of e-scooter rental companies Lime, Dott and Tier – a move that will see rented e-scooters banished from the streets of the Spanish capital. Lime, Dott and Tier were the companies selected to offer e-scooter rental in Madrid, with permits granted for 2,000 scooters each. The council’s decision means “rental scooters will disappear from the city from October,” it said. A spokesman for Dott told CNN on Monday that the company had received an official notification from Madrid city hall on Thursday. Madrid is not the first city to take action against e-scooter rentals, which have become increasingly divisive.

But it was only when Putin launched his full-scale invasion of Ukraine , in 2022, that Ammosov began to plot the overthrow of his homeland. Successful sales of the Mate XT tri-fold smartphone, which began pre-orders on Saturday, would be another indication of the company’s sustained resurgence. It also comes after Chinese smartphone makers dominated the top five spots domestically on a quarterly basis for the first time ever, she said, pushing Apple to sixth place. “The close timing of Huawei and Apple’s product launches signals the start of a new competitive wave in the Chinese premium market,” Liu told CNN.
