MELBOURNE, June 16 (Reuters) - Australia's peak sports authority has recommended testosterone limits for transgender athletes seeking to compete in elite female competitions as part of guidelines on inclusion released on Friday. The 'Transgender & Gender-Diverse Inclusion Guidelines for HP (high-performance) Sport' recommends transgender athletes have plasma testosterone levels of less than 2.5 nanomoles per litre for two years prior to competition. Transgender inclusion in female competition has become one of the most contentious and divisive issues in sport. Australia's guidelines come months after the national basketball federation rejected a transgender athlete's application to play in a semi-professional league, drawing criticism from LGBTI groups. Eligibility requirements for transgender athletes in elite female competition vary broadly in Australian sports.

Test Cricket’s Last Stand

Not many international sporting contests predate the countries that play them, but few contests are as old as the Ashes. The cricket series between England and Australia was first played in 1882, before Australia was even founded as a nation. On Friday, its 73rd edition will begin in Edgbaston, a suburb of Birmingham, England. Ashes series consist of five so-called Test matches, each of which lasts for up to five days; the series is won by the team that wins more of these games. Because of its interwoven challenge of skill and endurance, Test cricket has long been considered the highest level, and perhaps the purest form, of the sport.

The incident has shocked the city, particularly the student community, with Nottingham home to two universities with more than 50,000 students. The University of Nottingham students were attacked as they returned home from a post-exam party, the Times reported.

Throngs of supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan have been arrested. Key allies have resigned from his party, saying they had been threatened with criminal charges and arrests. As political tensions between Mr. Khan and the Pakistani government have flared in recent weeks and sparked violent nationwide protests, the country’s powerful military has responded by launching a chilling campaign against Mr. Khan’s supporters that aims to hollow out his political party ahead of general elections this fall. The pressure campaign has begun to chip away at Mr. Khan’s momentum, analysts say — the military’s most forceful effort yet to disempower the former leader who was removed from office last year. It’s the latest move in the Pakistani military’s standard playbook to sideline politicians who have fallen out of its favor and preserve its iron hold on the country’s politics.

England made a first-day record 506 runs in 75 overs in the first test against Pakistan in Rawalpindi. "Every Ashes series gets the juices flowing but there's added excitement this time around," former England skipper Nasser Hussain told The Metro. "That's because of the brand and style of cricket this England side are playing. "I think England are marginal favourites just because Australia haven't won over here for such a long time but it's very hard to call. All I know is there won't be too many draws," former England captain Michael Atherton said.

McDonald said Starc was not the only bowler who went for runs against India and that the 33-year-old lent much balance to their pace attack. "Mitch went at a bit more than he generally goes at, but they complement each other really, really well. Cummins also threw his weight behind Starc, tipping him to play a key role in the five-test series in England. The unassuming and soft-spoken German never displayed the same flashy traits as his fellow superstars, instead quietly going about his business - overlooked by many but always an integral cog in the City winning machine. Haaland may have scored 52 times this season but Gundogan has always been a constant threat. In a tense title race where City had played catch-up for months, Gundogan scored twice against Leeds United as City maintained their advantage at the top of the Premier League in the home stretch last month. He then repeated his heroics with a brace against Everton as they kept Arsenal at bay to win a fourth league title in five seasons. Gundogan then stunned arch-rivals Manchester United in the FA Cup with another double, scoring his first by volleying home 12 seconds into the game.

LONDON, June 11 (Reuters) - For Australia captain Pat Cummins, Sunday's crushing victory over India in the World Test Championship (WTC) final signalled a perfect start to what he hopes will be a "legacy defining" stay in England. It's not going to be easy but if we were to win it, that is legacy defining stuff." Their WTC triumph was hailed by the International Cricket Council, who wrote on Twitter: "The all-conquering Australia have now won every ICC Men's Trophy". That bulging trophy cabinet includes five 50-over World Cups, one T20 World Cup, two Champions Trophy prizes and now the WTC mace. June 9 (Reuters) - Walt Disney Co's (DIS.N) Hotstar will offer free streaming of cricket tournaments in India on mobile devices, a move similar to its top rival JioCinema, as it aims to court more users in the cricket-crazy country. Hotstar on Friday said it will offer the Asia Cup and ICC Men's Cricket World Cup tournaments at no cost to users. The company lost the streaming rights for the highly popular Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket tournament to Reliance Industries' (RELI.NS) JioCinema earlier this year. JioCinema, which made the tournament free to watch, clocked a record 1.47 billion digital views in the first weekend of the tournament. While JioCinema is preparing to start charging users for its content, it plans to keep IPL streaming free, Jyoti Deshpande, president of Reliance's media and content business, told Bloomberg in an April Interview.

CNN —In the world of sport, there are many reasons for games to be suspended or postponed. At a cricket festival in Ireland, a game had to be suspended as a swarm of bees descended onto the pitch forcing everyone in the vicinity to hide from the buzzy mob. The live stream showing the event declared “bees stop play” as the presence of the bees near the clubhouse meant the game had to be suspended for 112 minutes before it could be restarted. The local beekeeper arrived at the cricket ground and found the queen bee – rescuing the cricket fans, players, and umpires from the swarm. The Knights ended up winning the game by seven wickets, overcoming their opponents and the 20,000-strong swarm along the way.

The 70-year-old former cricket hero who become prime minister in 2018 has been embroiled in a confrontation with the powerful military since he was ousted in a no-confidence vote last year. Khan was freed days later but new charges against him have been piling up. The military, which denies involvement in civilian politics, initially saw Khan with his conservative, nationalist agenda as a leader who shared their interests. But as prime minister, Khan took steps that angered the generals, in particular in connection with security sector appointments. The prime minister who replaced Khan, Shahbaz Sharif, has rejected his call for an election before one is due by late this year.

After Usman Khawaja fell for a duck, Warner shared a 69-run stand with Marnus Labuschagne, who reached 26 not out, to steady the innings. Shardul Thakur dismissed Warner for 43 in the penultimate over before lunch. Earlier, India did not have to wait long for a breakthrough after captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and inserted Australia on a grassy wicket. After a quiet opening hour, Warner cut loose and hit Umesh Yadav for four fours, including three in a row, in an over. Shardul Thakur had two lbw appeals against Labuschagne turned down and India reviewed both decisions but could not get them reversed.

QUETTA, Pakistan, June 7 (Reuters) - Pakistani police on Wednesday formally named former prime minister Imran Khan in connection with the murder by unknown gunmen of a lawyer seeking sedition proceedings against him. Khan, who has not been charged in connection with the lawyer's murder, has dismissed all the cases against him as concocted by his opponents. Provincial government spokesman Babar Khan said Khan could face formal charges if and when the murder case goes to trial. It was not immediately clear how the link between unknown gunmen and Khan was made. Khan has accused the military and its intelligence agency of openly trying to destroy his party, saying he has "no doubt" he will be tried in a military court and thrown into jail.

Stokes looked in discomfort when he took a catch to dismiss Ireland's Curtis Campher during England's 10-wicket win in the one-off test at Lord's. The 32-year-old has had knee trouble for some time now, restricting his seam bowling in test matches. My weight went on the inside of my knee, I hyper-extended it. It was one of those things, but I am 32 (on Sunday) so that probably explains it," Stokes said. "I have absolutely no doubt that the military courts are meant for me," said Khan, who is out on bail. Amnesty International says Pakistan's military courts have previously shown disregard for due process, lack of transparency, coerced confessions and executions after unfair trials. Warner wants to play his last test in Sydney next January

June 3 (Reuters) - Australia opener David Warner said he will call time on his test career after playing against Pakistan at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) next January, if he is still in the team by then. When available, Warner has been a fixture at the top of the Australian order since his debut in 2011 but his place in the side for the World Test Championship final and Ashes series has been called into question after a run of poor form. The 36-year-old said on Saturday that he wanted to play on until the 2024 Twenty20 World Cup but would call time on his test career after the third test against Pakistan, before the two-match series against West Indies that follows. I've always said the World Cup will be my final game," Warner told reporters in Beckenham, England. "If I get through this and I can make the Pakistan series, I will definitely finish up then."

Greater stability will boost Australian hopes, says Labuschagne

June 3 (Reuters) - Batsman Marnus Labuschagne believes Australia will benefit from increased stability in their Ashes squad as they prepare to face England in the first test of the series later this month. "In 2019, we weren't as set on the team and there was probably a lot more questions about people coming back in," Labuschagne said. "That was Steve, Dave and Cameron's first entry back into test cricket, there wasn't that much stability, even with our bowlers. He helped the Australians retain the Ashes before playing a prominent role in the 4-0 series victory over the English in Australia in 2021/22. I really feel like we let one slip last time we were here, and hopefully we can amend that."

June 1 (Reuters) - One lucky punter who believed 14 years ago that Josh Tongue would one day play for England and placed a cheeky bet will win 50,000 pounds ($63,000) when the fast bowler makes his international debut against Ireland on Thursday. Tim Piper had watched Tongue play when he was just an 11-year-old and placed a 100-pound bet at odds of 500-1 that he would play a test match for England in the future. "I've kept the bet slip in a cupboard all these years," Piper told BBC Sport. Tongue had, however, contemplated retirement during a 15-month shoulder-injury layoff from 2021-2022 before two operations and botox injections fixed the issue. India's urban unemployment soared during the COVID-19 pandemic, reaching a high of 20.9% in the April-June 2020 quarter, while wages fell. Falling employment and earnings undermine India’s chances to fuel the economic growth needed to create jobs for its young and growing population. This means that of the estimated urban workforce of about 150 million, only 73 million have full-time jobs. But only 24 million will likely be created, leaving behind "46 million missing jobs." "From that lens, a growth rate of 6.5% will solve a third of India’s jobs problem," Bhandari wrote.
Djokovic won a record-extending 10th Australian Open in January - despite coming into the tournament with a hamstring issue - to equal Nadal's tally of 22 Grand Slams. An elbow injury forced Djokovic to pull out of the Madrid Open this month and he needed a painkiller during his quarter-final loss in Rome, but the 36-year-old is now back in shape. Djokovic, who starts against Aleksandar Kovacevic, said world number one Carlos Alcaraz was the "biggest favourite". Alcaraz and Djokovic are in the same side of the draw and could potentially meet in the semi-finals. Alcaraz won three titles on clay this year before his shock third-round exit from the Italian Open, but the Spaniard will be expected to resume normal service in his French Open first-round match against Italian qualifier Flavio Cobolli on Monday.
