CNN —The version of Easter you’re likely familiar with probably starts with how the Bible tells the story. As I show in my book, “God’s Ghostwriters: Enslaved Christians and the Marking of the Bible,” ancient dictation was bare bones and idiosyncratic. For the past week the best drama on NBC — apologies to Dick Wolf — has been in the news department. On Friday, NBC News announced that it was hiring Ronna McDaniel, the former chairwoman of the Republican National Committee, as a political analyst. By Sunday morning, Kristen Welker was grilling Ms. McDaniel on “Meet the Press,” after which the former host Chuck Todd told his successor on-air that their bosses “owe you an apology.” By Monday morning, the hosts of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” condemned the hire. This kind of full-on, on-air revolt was something else — because Ms. McDaniel’s hiring was something else. The fiasco at NBC was in part a sign of how media outlets are struggling to cover politics in unusual times.

Six former law enforcement officers who called themselves the Goon Squad face sentencing in Mississippi starting today, months after they pleaded guilty to federal civil rights offenses for torturing and sexually assaulting two Black men and a third white man who has remained anonymous until now. Prosecutors are expected to detail the officers’ violent actions, and victims will have an opportunity to share their stories. The officers could speak publicly for the first time if they choose to talk about their crimes or ask the judge for leniency. Hunter Elward, who pleaded guilty to shooting one of the victims, is scheduled to be sentenced first, on Tuesday morning. The other officers will then be sentenced during individual hearings.

CNN —Toby Keith will receive a posthumous honor. The late country music star, who died in February at age 62 from complications of stomach cancer, will be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. “Election to the Country Music Hall of Fame is country music’s highest honor, and new members are elected annually by an anonymous panel of industry leaders chosen by the Country Music Association (CMA),” according to a press release about the announcement. The legendary country singer went public with his stomach cancer diagnosis in 2022, which he had been dealing with since October 2021. The new members-elect will be inducted during this year’s Country Music Hall of Fame Medallion Ceremony on October 20.
