Morgan Stanley was the last of the biggest U.S. banks to report quarterly earnings. Photo: Thalia Juarez for The Wall Street JournalWall Street banks had hoped that deal making would rev back up in early 2023. Morgan Stanley was the last of the biggest U.S. banks to report quarterly earnings with its release Wednesday, and in some ways it followed a familiar template. Investment banking revenue fell, as it did at JPMorgan Chase & Co., Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and other large banks. Trading revenue also fell at most of the banks, including Morgan Stanley, though by a smaller amount than the decline in investment banking.

Goldman Sachs Sheds Consumer Loans as Losses Mount

How much will it cost for Goldman Sachs to extricate itself from a mistake? Goldman said it had sold off some of those down-market loans and conceded defeat on others, to the tune of nearly $500 million in losses. In October, the firm cleaved its wobbling consumer offerings, including credit card partnerships and interest-earning accounts, into a separate division. Three months later, the bank disclosed more than $3 billion in losses tied to that business over the previous years. Even for a lender as large as Goldman, the continuous bleeding is no small matter.

While U.S. retail sales fell more than expected in March, so-called core retail sales, which excludes automobiles, gasoline, building materials and food services, slipped just 0.3% last month, data released on Friday showed. So I think that will increase (expectations) for the Fed to continue raising interest rates," said Tina Teng, market analyst at CMC Markets. The two-year U.S. Treasury yield , which typically moves in step with interest rate expectations, stood at 4.1161%, after hitting a roughly two-week top of 4.137% on Friday. Some hawkish Fed speak also aided the higher interest rate expectations, with Fed Governor Christopher Waller and Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic suggesting that the Fed could hike another 25 bps next month. The offshore yuan fell roughly 0.1% to 6.8786 per dollar.
Dollar rebounds on higher expectations for Fed hike in May

The dollar bounced from a one-year low on Monday as resilience in core U.S. retail sales, a rise in short-term inflation expectations and impressive Wall Street bank earnings raised market expectations for an interest rate hike in May. Against a basket of currencies, the U.S. dollar index rose 0.15% to 101.82, standing some distance away from Friday's one-year low of 100.78. So I think that will increase (expectations) for the Fed to continue raising interest rates," said Tina Teng, market analyst at CMC Markets. Short-term inflation expectations have also increased, with the University of Michigan's preliminary April reading showing that one-year inflation expectations rose to 4.6% from 3.6% in March. Some hawkish Fed speak also aided the higher interest rate expectations, with Fed Governor Christopher Waller and Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic suggesting that the Fed could hike another 25 bps next month.
A Labor Department report showed producer prices rose 2.7% in March, on a year-over-year basis, below economists' estimates of a 3% rise. The dollar and Treasury yields slid as investors mostly stuck to expectations of the 25-bps hike after Thursday's data. Analysts expect S&P 500 companies to record a profit decline of 5.2% in the first quarter, as per Refinitiv IBES data, in what could be their worst showing since the third quarter of 2020. Financial companies that are part of the S&P 500 are expected to report a profit growth of 4.3% in the first quarter. ET, Dow e-minis were up 62 points, or 0.18%, S&P 500 e-minis were up 12.5 points, or 0.30%, and Nasdaq 100 e-minis were up 60.75 points, or 0.47%.
Following a selloff in March due to the banking crisis, the benchmark S&P 500 (.SPX) has traded in tight ranges this month as investors assessed the path for U.S. interest rates following strong jobs data and signs of cooling inflation. ET (1230 GMT) is expected to show producer prices barely rose in March on a month-on-month basis, following a 0.1% contraction in February. Meanwhile, another set of data is also expected to show weekly jobless claims rose 232,000 in the week ended April 8, higher than the 228,000 claims filed a week earlier. Financial companies that are part of the S&P 500 are expected to report a profit growth of 4.3% in the first quarter. ET, Dow e-minis were down 4 points, or 0.01%, S&P 500 e-minis were up 3.75 points, or 0.09%, and Nasdaq 100 e-minis were up 30.5 points, or 0.24%.
Wednesday’s data showed consumer prices growing at a slower pace than expected last month, bolstering the argument that inflation is decelerating. Yet some investors believe markets may have already accounted for a mild inflation slowdown and say further gains in stocks could depend on whether upcoming corporate earnings - especially results from banks - can beat forecasts. Earnings per share for the six largest U.S. banks are expected to fall 10% from the same quarter last year, according to Refinitv data. Overall, analysts expect S&P 500 earnings to fall 5.2% in the first quarter of 2023 from the year-ago period, I/B/E/S data from Refinitiv as of April 7 showed. That weakness would come on the heels of a 3.2% earnings fall in the fourth quarter of 2022, a back-to-back decline known as an earnings recession which has not occurred since COVID-19 blasted corporate results in 2020.
Some of those stocks are on the conviction buy list of the Wall Street bank, which has raised some of their price targets, giving them big upside. It says it maintains a "tactically more bullish view" on SolarEdge, which is also on Goldman's conviction buy list. Mercedes-Benz Goldman gave the automaker a price target of 96 euros ($105), or around 42% upside, in an April 6 note. Financial services and insurance stocks Goldman upgraded insurer Corebridge Financial's rating to buy, giving it a price target of $23, or potential upside of around 44%.
Earnings per share for the six biggest U.S. banks are expected to be down about 10% from a year earlier, analyst estimates from Refinitiv I/B/E/S show. The bank is expected to report a 30% rise in EPS, buoyed by an almost 36% increase in net interest income, according the Refinitiv I/B/E/S estimates and Reuters calculations. "We expect a challenging earnings season for the banks," said David Chiaverini, banking analyst at Wedbush Securities, in a note. He said bank managements will become more defensive, implementing liquidity measures that could lead to downward revisions for net interest income. Net interest income for the six biggest U.S. banks are expected to be up about 30% from a year earlier, according to analyst estimates from Refinitiv I/B/E/S.
In other words, 72.5% of private-sector organizations — up from 60% in the July-to-September 2021 period — said they did not have employees working remotely. The BLS survey also interpreted respondents’ answers as referring to a company’s formal telework policies, not whether some employees informally work remotely on occasion, such as responding to work emails from home. The same survey respondents said their employers plan to allow employees to work remotely 2.2 days a week, for those who can. “I have talked to hundreds of organizations about WFH [working from home] over the past three weeks, and this is now clearly stabilizing to a post-pandemic norm,” he said in an email. In Pew’s February survey, 35% of people who could work remotely were doing so full time, down from 55% in October 2020, but still well above the 7% of people working remotely full-time before the pandemic.
Finding opportunities in this tricky stock market is no easy task, and Goldman Sachs thinks it might be worth looking at these unloved gems with great potential. The Wall Street bank identified a slew of stocks where its analysts are bullish but most of the Street gave either a neutral or sell rating. These stocks with buy ratings from Goldman analysts have at least 10% upside, based on their price target, and the firm's earnings estimates for these companies are at least 2% above consensus. "These names appear underappreciated by the market and could generate alpha for investors with a contrarian view," Goldman said. Ride sharing giant Lyft is also widely hated by Wall Street, except for Goldman.
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wall Street bankers face an increasingly gloomy job market after last month’s banking crisis worsened an already bleak outlook for pay and staffing. One likely consequence of the turmoil is that banks tighten their lending standards, which could further hinder dealmaking - making the prospects for jobs and compensation on Wall Street more gloomy. Now, financial industry workers are fretting not only about pay, but job security. The Wall Street giant typically cuts about 5% of its lowest-performing staff as part of the process. While there are plenty of reasons to be glum, Wall Street workers are enjoying one silver lining after the pandemic: greater flexibility in structuring their workday.

U.S. District Judge Paul Crotty in Manhattan rejected claims that the Wall Street banks, two of Archegos' prime brokers, should be liable for selling several Archegos-linked stocks while possessing inside knowledge about the firm's imminent collapse, materially harming investors in those stocks. While regional and mid-sized banks are behind the recent turmoil, it appears that large banks may be footing the bill. Ultimately, that means higher fees for bank customers and lower rates on their savings accounts. The law also gives the FDIC the authority to decide which banks shoulder the brunt of that assessment fee. Passing it on: Regardless of who’s charged, the fees will eventually get passed on to bank customers in the end, said Isaac. In 2021, Wall Street was estimated to be responsible for 16% of all economic activity in the city.
This move has attracted positive sentiment from major Wall Street banks, with Morgan Stanley saying that this restructuring could lead to a 100% upside in Alibaba's share price. Alibaba shares closed 15% higher Wednesday in Hong Kong, after trading higher by a similar amount on the NYSE on Tuesday. Morgan Stanley said that Alibaba shares, listed in the U.S. as BABA , are trading at a significant discount to their sum-of-the-parts valuation, and the restructuring could unlock this value. Nearly all of the valuation comes out of Alibaba's massive e-commerce and retail operations, according to Morgan Stanley. Morgan Stanley analysts led by Gary Yu wrote in a note to clients on Mar.
The US housing market has slowed dramatically over the past year, RH CEO Gary Friedman said. Soaring interest rates have hit housing demand, and the banking fiasco is a fresh blow, he said. Friedman said the outlook is less clear now than in 2008, and he urged the Fed not to tank the economy. "The fact is, we've been in a massive housing recession for the past year," Friedman continued, adding that "accelerating weakness" in the sector could weigh on his company's revenue and profits for several quarters. Several experts have sounded the alarm on the housing market and economy.

March 29 (Reuters) - Wall Street banks including JPMorgan Chase & Co (JPM.N) and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (GS.N) are looking to start trading private credit loans, Bloomberg News reported on Wednesday, citing people familiar with the matter. The banks are among the firms talking to private debt funds about facilitating secondary-market transactions, according to the report. JPMorgan declined to comment, while Goldman did not immediately respond to a Reuters' request for comment. That's the concern plaguing aspiring investment bankers across the country as they watch the banking crisis unfold. "I think there's definitely a sense of unease in finance," said Asif Rahman, co-founder of Wall Street career coaching company Office Hours.
