Mario called Tupac. All he could do was listen to her cry as he explained that he didn't know when he'd be back. He didn't speak Spanish, didn't know a soul in Mexico, and had no clue where he would be sent. Mario didn't ask why, and the guy didn't inquire about Mario's predicament. "It's all good, man," Mario told Jimmy.

Fewer than half of rural hospitals now have maternity units, prompting government officials and families to scramble for answers. The closures have worsened so-called “maternity care deserts" — counties with no hospitals or birth centers that offer obstetric care and no OB providers. Ultimately, doctors and researchers say, having fewer hospital maternity units makes having babies less safe. “It feels like you’re held in a way.”Some states and communities are taking steps to create more freestanding birth centers. It was a novel and “innovative” idea to request federal nurses to boost staffing at a rural maternity unit, Wyden’s office said.

My fellow inmates and I were gathered in the women’s ward of Evin prison in Tehran one evening when we saw a television report of Mahsa Amini’s death. In the women’s ward, we were filled with grief — and rage. Other women’s wards also filled up. Other women have been sent to high-security wards, including Evin’s Section 209, run by the Ministry of Intelligence. A detainee who was transferred to Evin from Adelabad prison in Shiraz told us of hundreds of new female detainees in Adelabad.

The Kurdistan Human Rights Network, which said the incident was linked to the protests, said special forces entered the ward, beat up the women and fired pellet bullets. In a separate incident, human rights group Hengaw said security forces opened fire in the Kurdish city of Mahabad, wounding at least one person. Earlier, social media and reports by rights groups spoke of security forces taking up positions around Amini's home in Saqez, in western Iran. Speakers led the crowd in chants of "Say her name ... Mahsa Amini," and also recited "We are the revolution" and "Human rights for Iran!" Iran's Etemad daily reported in August that the lawyer for Amini's family also faced charges of "propaganda against the system".

The veteran South African politician, Zulu prince and controversial figure during the apartheid liberation struggle, died last week aged 95. Fightbacks were the order of the day as Liverpool recovered from falling behind to win 3-1 at Wolverhampton Wanderers in the early kickoff and two goals deep into stoppage time earned Tottenham Hotspur a 2-1 win over Sheffield United. After another tumultuous week off the pitch for Manchester United, the club needed the players to lift their supporters. United fell behind in the 20th minute when Danny Welbeck slotted home against his former club when left unmarked in the penalty area. "Definitely that (losing three from five for the first time in Premier League history) is something that bothers me, but also I have to seen the way we play," coach Erik ten Hag said. Tottenham were heading for their first Premier League defeat under Ange Postecoglou as they trailed to Gustavo Hamer's goal against the run of play in the 75th minute.

SARAJEVO (Reuters) - As a group of would-be protesters grows, shouting and blowing their whistles at the EU force's camp in Sarajevo, a military aircraft flies low and helicopters take off, all as part of a EUFOR exercise echoing the current political crisis in Bosnia. Dodik, a pro-Russian nationalist, has long sought to separate the Serb-dominated part of Bosnia from the rest of it. EUFOR replaced NATO troops in Bosnia in 2004 with a mandate to stabilise the ethnically divided country. Last year, days after Russia invaded Ukraine, the EU decided to almost double the size of its peacekeeping force from 600 troops by sending in reserves to ward off any potential instability. NATO and senior EU officials have warned that instability from the war in Ukraine could spread to the Western Balkans.

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) — Bangladesh is struggling with a record outbreak of dengue fever, with experts saying a lack of a coordinated response is causing more deaths from the mosquito-transmitted disease. So far this year, 778 people in Bangladesh have died and 157,172 have been infected, according to the government’s Directorate General Health Services. The previous highest number of deaths was in 2022, when 281 people are reported to have died during the entire year. Outside Dhaka and other big cities, medical professionals including nurses need better training in handling dengue cases, he said. If the city corporation or ward commissioner took more care and sprayed insecticides, then we could have avoided the dengue outbreak,” he said.

Oher’s petition says soon after he moved in with the family in 2004, the Tuohys gave him legal papers he thought were necessary for the adoption. Conservatorship was the tool chosen to accomplish this goal.”“There was never an intent to adopt him,” the Tuohy’s response states. The Tuohys say it is “demonstrably false” that Oher only found out in February 2023 that he wasn’t adopted. The Tuohys say all the money received from “The Blind Side” movie has been split equally between Sean and Leigh Anne, their two children and Oher – 20% each. The Tuohys said Oher’s share was paid to them, they paid the taxes for a period of time but wrote Oher a check for his full 20% share.

Shopping cart in a department of a Carrefour supermarket, in front of pastas and sauces. French grocery chain Carrefour has taken the unusual step of adding labels to its products that have recently shrunk in size but have ramped up in price. The move — both in stores and on its website — looks to pile pressure on its suppliers that have increased prices for the chain, despite raw material prices having recently eased. Carrefour added the "shrinkflation" warning stickers to a range of products, from Lipton Iced Tea and Pepsi , to boxes of Lindt chocolates and baby milk powder. Carrefour did not immediately respond to a CNBC request for comment.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Environmental groups called on federal regulators Thursday to immediately shut down one of two reactors at California’s last nuclear power plant until tests can be conducted on critical machinery they believe could fail and cause a catastrophe. “We will not sit idly by while PG&E cuts corners on Unit 1’s safety,” Hallie Templeton, legal director for Friends of the Earth, said in a statement. Friends of the Earth, a longtime critic of plant safety, was a central player in negotiating the 2016 closing agreement. He noted that unlike most other reactor safety components, the pressure vessel has no independent backup system that can be called upon if it should crack or fracture and lose essential cooling water. According to the NRC, embrittlement occurs as a result of reactor operation when neutrons from the nuclear fuel irradiate the steel plates and welds used to construct the reactor vessel.

Lawmakers backing the bill say a large number of companies in the state already disclose some of their own emissions. California’s climate disclosure bill would be different because of all the indirect emissions companies would have to report. But the California bill would go beyond that, by mandating that both public and private companies report their direct and indirect emissions. Companies would have to report indirect emissions including those released by transporting products and disposing waste. Companies would have to begin publicly disclosing their direct emissions annually in 2026 and start annually reporting their indirect emissions starting in 2027.

Pay-transparency laws on the whole have helped companies develop healthier work environments, Ward said. AdvertisementAdvertisement"It can create a negative dynamic between new and old employees, and it can lead to really counterproductive comparisons of your peers, which ultimately demotivates those employees," Ward added. Over the past decade, dozens of laws were passed nationwide prohibiting employers from firing or reprimanding workers for publicly discussing salaries. Younger workers are more likely to discuss pay with their colleagues and friends — as well as on social media. Do you live in a state with pay-transparency laws?

An area of high pressure over the Atlantic, known as the Bermuda High, will have a major influence on how quickly Lee turns. As the high pressure weakens this week, it will allow Lee to start moving northward. Lee could make a quick turn to the north early this week if high pressure weakens significantly. If the jet stream sets up along the East Coast, it will act as a barrier that prevents Lee from approaching the coast.
