One would think that those perpetuating the “open border” myth would be eager to seize every opportunity to strengthen border security. This action — and similar ones orchestrated by other GOP governors — have also deliberately elevated the “open border” narrative, which falsely represents that unlawful immigrants are waltzing into the U.S. through a porous southern border in droves. Contrary to the “open border” myth, U.S. borders are guarded by a vast and well-funded national security agency that has grown far larger and more powerful in recent years. Nick Ut / Getty Images fileOne would think that those perpetuating the “open border” myth would be eager to seize every opportunity to strengthen border security. Characterizing the humanitarian challenge at the southern border as a solely U.S. “open border” problem also presents an inaccurate picture of the global forced displacement crisis.
Miles Taylor said Trump wanted criminals found at the border to be sent to Democrat-run cities. Taylor said Trump specifically wanted "murderers" and "rapists" to be identified and bussed out. "In January and February of 2019, Donald Trump directed us to go and take immigrants from the border and, quote, 'bus and dump them into Democratic cities and blue states,'" Taylor told CNN. "He wanted us to identify the murderers, the rapists, and the criminals, and, in particular, make sure we did not incarcerate them, and we put them in those cities." But put aside the murderers and the rapists and the criminals — could you take people from the border and just dump them into blue states?"
Lawmakers in Congress introduced a bill on Tuesday that aims to keep more Southeast Asian refugee families together, advocates say. The Southeast Asian Deportation Relief Act would place limitations on the Department of Homeland Security’s authority to deport refugees from Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos. The bill could have a significant impact for an estimated 15,000 Southeast Asian refugees, roughly 80% of whom were convicted of a crime and have completed their sentences but have final orders of removal and face deportation. “It is profoundly wrong for us to send refugees where their human rights are not protected and guaranteed.”The legislation would prevent DHS from detaining or deporting Southeast Asian refugees who arrived in the U.S. prior to 2008. And that still threatens their lives every single day through these deportation orders to countries that they fled as refugees,” Dinh said.
New York, home of the largest rapid transit system in the country, will install surveillance cameras in every New York City subway car by 2025, Gov. The move is aimed at increasing riders’ confidence in subway safety, Hochul said, as ridership numbers are still lagging behind pre-pandemic levels. But the decision to install cameras on subway cars worries some privacy advocates, who say it will increase the level of surveillance of New Yorkers without necessarily making the subway safer. Subway stations in the city already have surveillance cameras. Instead, Hochul framed the matter of cameras in subway cars as purely one of public safety and rider confidence.

Ron DeSantis sent two planes of mostly Venezuelan asylum-seekers to Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts, advertising executive Max Lefeld slammed the move as a political stunt. A group of migrants huddle on a sidewalk in front of St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Martha's Vineyard, Mass. The divisions largely fall along political lines, with Venezuelan Republicans defending DeSantis and Democrats blasting the move. Venezuelan migrants often cross the perilous Darien Gap in the Colombia-Panama border and then make their way north across Central America. Now many Venezuelans are divided, with Republicans defending DeSantis’ move to send Venezuelans to Martha’s Vineyard and Democrats condemning it.
Criminal hackers have recently targeted U.S. school districts and will likely continue to escalate their attacks this school year, federal agencies warned Tuesday. Hackers infected the district’s computer networks with malicious software, locking up files and demanding a ransom payment. While classes in Los Angeles weren’t canceled, the attack caused a “significant disruption” to the school district and some of its services, the district announced. Since then, there haven’t been any such high-profile ransomware attacks on energy infrastructure. Ransomware attacks on schools also run the risk of giving hackers access to children’s personal information, the government warned.
A leaked video obtained by Insider shows guards violently tackling a Black asylum seeker at a Louisiana detention center. Detainees and immigration lawyers say there is a disturbing and overlooked problem of anti-Black racism in immigration detention. In January, Representative Cori Bush (D-MO) and Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) called for a "holistic review of the disparate treatment of Black migrants." Across the state, eight new immigration detention centers have been opened in the past three years – all privately run. In just Texas and Louisiana, 11 separate facilities in recent years have shifted from prisons or jails to immigration detention centers.

The legislation establishing it directed the committee to report on the entire set of "facts, circumstances, and causes" surrounding the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol. The January 6 committee report contains extensive documentation of forewarnings of violence that were percolating up from confidential sources, open-source analysts, and senior officials. On January 4, Senator Mark Warner, chair of the Senate intelligence committee, called the FBI's deputy director with his concerns. As the committee notes, a threat analyst noted a "tenfold uptick in violent online rhetoric targeting Congress and law enforcement." Looming over the January 6 committee's report is the report by the 9/11 Commission, which was far from perfect, but much more comprehensive and unsparing.
