ATLANTA (AP) — Herschel Walker's wife is seeking to sell the Atlanta house that the football great listed as his residence when he ran for U.S. Senate last year as a Republican. Julie Blanchard, whom Walker married in 2021, has owned the house and 1.5 acre (0.61 hectare) lot for more than 20 years. Democrat Raphael Warnock beat Walker by about 3 percentage points in a December 2022 runoff, ensuring Democrats a majority in the Senate. Such an exemption lowers property taxes and is only supposed to be available if a person is using a house as a primary residence. A financial disclosure statement filed during the Senate race showed the Atlanta house was being used as a rental property as recently as 2021.

United Parcel Service (UPS) vehicles are seen at a facility in Brooklyn, New York City, U.S., May 9, 2022. REUTERS/Andrew Kelly Acquire Licensing RightsSept 26 (Reuters) - United Parcel Service (UPS.N) said on Tuesday it would hire more than 100,000 seasonal workers to handle the 2023 holiday rush, a similar number of employees it hired a year earlier during the same period. Both UPS and rival FedEx Corp (FDX.N) hire thousands of temporary workers each year to move more parcels between the months of October and January. Analysts expect holiday sales to grow at a slower pace this year as high inflation eats into household budgets. A report from career consultancy firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas showed that weaker spending and increased labor costs would result in U.S. retailers hiring the lowest number of seasonal workers this year since 2008.

U.S. District Judge Thomas Thrash during a hearing denied a request by Edward Blum's American Alliance for Equal Rights for a preliminary injunction blocking Fearless Fund from considering applications for grants only from businesses led by Black women. Blum's group had asked the judge to temporarily block the Fearless Fund's "racially exclusive program" while the court considered the merits of the case. Fearless Fund founders Arian Simone and Ayana Parsons in a joint statement said they were pleased that Thrash rejected Blum's attempt to shut down their grant program. According to the Fearless Fund, businesses owned by Black women in 2022 received less than 1% of the $288 billion that venture capital firms deployed. It also provides grants, and Blum's lawsuit took aim at its Fearless Strivers Grant Contest, which awards Black women who own small businesses $20,000 in grants and other resources to grow their businesses.

High home prices and interest rates have created many challenges for young Americans. These trends have been driven by the combination of high home prices and interest rates. By pushing up the number of renters, high home prices help keep young Americans' rent prices high. For young Americans, there's not a whole lot to like about high interest rates. Elevated rates not only contribute to the high mortgage rates that have helped make homeownership so expensive but also make credit-card debt all the more costly.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Ronald Acuña Jr. joined baseball’s exclusive 40-40 club Friday night by hitting his 40th home run of the season for the Atlanta Braves to go along with his 68 stolen bases. Acuña became the fifth player in major league history to have at least 40 homers and 40 steals in the same year. The others were Alfonso Soriano for the Washington Nationals in 2006, Alex Rodríguez for the Seattle Mariners in 1998, Barry Bonds for the San Francisco Giants in 1996, and Jose Canseco for the Oakland Athletics in 1988. Acuña connected off Nationals left-hander Patrick Corbin leading off the top of the first inning. A leading contender for the NL MVP award, the 25-year-old Acuña was already the only player in big league history with 30 homers and 60 stolen bases in one season.

Knowing which hazardous materials are on a train is key to helping firefighters decide how to respond and whether evacuations are needed. The railroads worked with emergency responders to develop the AskRail app in 2014 that firefighters could download to their phones or the computers mounted within their fire trucks. That move made the AskRail information available to about 2.3 million firefighters with hazardous materials training. Railroads are trying to ensure the information is available in multiple places to reduce the chances that firefighters will struggle to find out what is on a train after a derailment. If that effort succeeds across the Atlanta-based railroad's 22-state network in the East, the other major railroads could follow.
