Right now, the program for seniors will only cover one PET scan per lifetime for patients participating in clinical trials. The Medicare proposal would allow regional organizations, called Medicare Administrative Contractors, to decide whether to cover the diagnostic tool. It is still unclear when the decision on PET scans will be finalized. PET scans are a crucial diagnostic tool that detect an amyloid protein on the brain that is associated with Alzheimer's disease. People on Medicare generally pay 20% of the cost of a PET scan after meeting their deductible.

Johnson & Johnson on Tuesday sued the Biden administration over Medicare's new powers to slash drug prices, making it the third pharmaceutical company to challenge the controversial provision of the Inflation Reduction Act. The lawsuit filed in federal district court in New Jersey argues the Medicare negotiations violate the First and Fifth Amendments of the U.S. Constitution. J&J also argues that the new provision forces the company to agree that the federal government is negotiating fair drug prices. The company believes the provision doesn't involve true negotiations since the government "unilaterally dictates" drug prices. HHS said in a statement it will "vigorously defend the President's drug price negotiation law, which is already helping to lower health care costs for seniors and people with disabilities."

This relatively new and growing segment of the housing market is called “build for rent” or BFR (or “build to rent” or BTR). Often constructed in suburban areas with low crime and near good schools, BFR homes attract those who want the lifestyle of a house — but the affordability or convenience of renting. Over the past few years, however, large investment groups — like Home Partners of America or Invitation Homes — have got into buying up existing single-family homes to rent. Miller said demand for BFR homes is strong and suit a modern way of living involving remote work, lifestyle moves and delayed homeownership. Even as a small portion of the market, those BFR homes that are being built are not the smaller, more affordable homes that middle-income earners are looking for.

UnitedHealth Group' s stock price jumped Friday after the health-care conglomerate reported second-quarter revenue and adjusted earnings that topped Wall Street's expectations despite rising medical costs. UnitedHealth Group is the biggest health-care company in the U.S. by market cap and revenue, and is even bigger than the nation's largest banks. Given its size, UnitedHealth Group is considered a bellwether for the broader health insurance sector. UnitedHealth Care said that was driven by the previously noted uptick in elective surgeries and outpatient care activity, primarily among seniors. But UnitedHealth Group executives indicated that the trend may be reversing.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday asked a federal judge in Ohio to block Medicare's new powers to negotiate drug prices before Oct. 1. They argued that the drug negotiations violate the First and Fifth Amendments of the U.S. Constitution, as well as the separation of powers. The Chamber asked Judge Thomas Rose on Wednesday to block the negotiations before they get under way because they violate the due process clause. Drugmaker Abbvie , a member of the U.S. Chamber and the Dayton, Ohio area chamber, fears that its blood cancer drug Imbruvica will be selected for the negotiations this fall. The Medicare drug price negotiations do not provide these safeguards and impose price caps that are well below a drug's market value, the chamber's lawyers said.

But terrified residents watching water climb in their homes had no way of knowing when or if help would arrive. It was like a river had been diverted, running now through the middle of the four small buildings that are the Weyant Green Apartments in the village of Highland Falls. Younger relatives were trying to help, but the nearby bridge was covered by several feet of rushing water, and they couldn’t get to the property. Pat Flynn, a former mayor of Highland Falls, made it over in his Explorer with a friend worried for her mother. He saw older men and women — the ones who could stand — cowering in their doorways as water rose up their legs.

He tells them, “As you get older, there are physiological changes and your brain becomes much more sensitive. It can put you at risk.”That’s how he learns that someone complaining about insomnia might be using stimulants, possibly methamphetamines, to get going in the morning. CNN —There’s nearly a 50-year age gap between the oldest Baby Boomer and the youngest member of Gen Z. As Pew President Michael Dimock put it, a common misconception about Baby Boomers’ past serves as a reminder of a key question we should be asking as we talk about Gen Z today. Cultural critic Louis Menand has pointed out that another important detail often gets overlooked when talking about this chapter in Baby Boomers’ past. And Gen Z may not be as ‘woke’ as you thinkCould our understanding of Gen Z’s politics – frequently described as liberal – also be missing part of the picture? Here's a deeper look at the headlines and their implications for our investment theses in these two health-care companies. The Club's take: The first-of-their-kind FDA and CMS actions came in generally as anticipated, and represent incremental positives for Eli Lilly. That's why some of the decline seen Friday in Eli Lilly shares – down over 2%, to around $453 each – could simply represent a sell-the-news situation. Eli Lilly has said donanemab could be approved by the FDA late this year or in early 2024. Our expectations around donanemab sales also are measured, and the drug is not the primary driver of our multiyear optimism for Eli Lilly.

Sales of the Alzheimer's drug Leqembi may be slow initially due to logistical requirements but could pick up in 2024, analysts said after the groundbreaking treatment won approval in the U.S.Wall Street is chewing over the Food and Drug Administration's Thursday approval of Leqembi – a milestone in the treatment of the disease, even though the drug isn't a cure. Leqembi, from drugmakers Eisai and Biogen , is the first medicine proven to slow the progression of Alzheimer's in people at the early stages of the memory-robbing disease. Yee added that the firm's channel checks suggest doctors see the registry requirement "as a potential real-world challenge – at least in the initial phase." That includes navigating Medicare's registry requirement and coordinating PET scans and MRIs to screen for dangerous side effects of the drug. But Goodman, like other analysts, also noted that "we continue to expect a slow ramp in 2023 and acceleration moving into 2024."

Leqembi is the first Alzheimer's antibody treatment to receive full FDA approval. The antibody, administered twice monthly through intravenous infusion, targets a protein called amyloid that is associated with Alzheimer's disease. Medicare coverage is a crucial step to help older Americans with early Alzheimer's disease pay for the treatment. Costs may vary depending on whether the patient has supplemental Medicare coverage or other secondary insurance, according to the agency. Philipson and his colleagues at the University of Chicago estimated that delaying Medicare coverage of Alzheimer's antibody treatments by one year would result in $6.8 billion in increased spending.

Though steadfast allies throughout much of the pandemic, Trump and DeSantis, as presidential primary rivals, agree on very little about what transpired during one of the most trying periods in their respective tenures in leadership. Unsaid in the ad was that DeSantis had repeatedly praised Fauci early in the pandemic, calling him “really, really good and really, really helpful” and “really doing a good job.” A CNN KFile review found Trump began harshly criticizing Fauci much earlier than DeSantis. Trump has dismissed the conservative back-slapping of DeSantis’ handling of the pandemic, insisting the governor’s performance wasn’t all that great. By preemptively attacking DeSantis’ pandemic policies, Trump, too, appears aware that voters could see his top rival as stronger on the issue. The shift became an early fault line in the fracturing relationship between Trump and DeSantis.
