Minneapolis is the first major metropolitan area to have inflation rates below the Fed's 2% target. According to Bloomberg, Minneapolis hit the goal in May with an inflation rate of 1.8%. The rate is likely due to aggressive legislating to address soaring housing costs in the city. While Minneapolis residents spent 39.9% of their monthly income on housing costs, their co-parts in San Francisco paid 46.7% of their monthly income to housing; residents of Boston shelled out a whopping 60.7% of their income for housing costs, per Bloomberg. People ideally would spend around 30% of their income on housing, senior vice president of the National Low Income Housing Coalition Andrew Aurand, told CNBC.

Factors such as cheaper airfares and weaker currencies in Scandinavia could play a role, but one of the world's biggest tour operators TUI (TUI1n.DE) said on Wednesday that climate change will also drive more tourists northbound. Tour operators in places like northern Norway also see an increased demand. This had resulted in more direct flight routes to Northern Norway being created, it said. Heather Storgaard, a Scottish tourist, planned her summer vacation this year in Denmark, with a stop in Northern Germany. Wissenbach is often in Italy due to work but said she preferred the north for holidays.

Strong travel demand helps TUI swing back to profit

That was despite prices rising 7% over last year, indicating that the higher cost of travel wasn't dampening demand. In particular, the wildfires in Rhodes, Greece meant approximately 8,000 TUI customers had to leave their hotels, TUI said. The cost of that will be reflected in the full-year results and is expected to be close to 25 million euros. Ebel said that the Mediterranean region in Europe remained one of the top destinations for the tour group despite extreme weather. "The heatwave in Northern Europe in June and the wildfires in Southern Europe have only dampened temporarily the previously strong development," he said.

In-N-Out may be pursuing litigation against a burger joint in Sinaloa, Mexico, LA Times reported. The restaurant is called In-I-Nout and has a logo that looks like an upside down In-N-Out logo. The knockoff In-N-Out in Mexico called In-I-Nout. If those aren't convincing enough to make someone think of In-N-Out, the Sinaloa restaurant's name might do the trick: It's called In-I-Nout. A Utah-based restaurant called Chadders was also sued in 2007 because of some similarities the two burger joints shared, including the menu.

Political scientists are saying the public is tired of hearing about Donald Trump. The inattention is not unique, but it is alarming given the nature of the charges, experts say. "The fact that most people don't pay attention to politics is certainly not unique to Trump," Enos said. What perhaps is unique to Trump is that he's exhibited such high levels of corruption." Enos said Trump's actions should be especially alarming and problematic to Americans because of his efforts to attack a foundational part of American democracy.

Professor Kevin McMunigal said he thinks Trump's chance of avoiding all charges is "zero." The maximum sentence for all the charges would be 650 years in prison. Additionally, McMunigal said, Trump would need to be surrounded by Secret Service agents, even while incarcerated. However, McMunigal noted that Trump does face multiple charges, and judges will consider the seriousness of an offense when considering sentencing. "The idea of overturning an election in the US is an incredibly serious offense," McMunigal said, referring to Trump's election fraud charges.

Velez fans violently attack club's players at gunpoint

July 31 (Reuters) - Uruguayan defender Diego Godin's farewell match ended with his team Velez Sarsfield losing to Huracan, sparking a violent incident on Sunday, as some of the Argentine club's own fans viciously attacked the players, assaulting them at gunpoint. When the team returned to their training camp at the Villa Olimpica Stadium hours after the match, they suffered a brutal visit from the club's supporters, as cars ambushed some of the players. We came out and it was all dark when the cars of the 'Barra Brava' came across us. "Atletico Velez regrets and strongly repudiates the intimidating situation experienced last night by some of our first team players in the vicinity of the Villa Olimpica," the club said in a statement. With only five wins in 27 games, Velez finished 25th out of 28 after the loss in the last round of the Argentine Professional League.

Suspected Chinese malware has been identified in several US military systems. US officials told the Times that investigations into Chinese malware had been underway for several months and that the malicious code had infiltrated US military systems across the country and abroad. Previous cyberattacks typically aimed to surveil US operations, experts told the Times. "China is steadfast and determined to penetrate our governments, our companies, our critical infrastructure," the deputy director of the National Security Agency, George Barnes, said at the Intelligence and National Security Summit earlier this month. Now, experts say this new wave of malicious code has the ability to disrupt US military and civilian operations.

Much of Russia's unprovoked war against its neighbor has been concentrated in Ukraine, but recently Ukraine has been bringing the fight to Russia's capital. According to the Times, Ukraine recently made an abnormal admission that it had orchestrated previous drone attacks, citing information from a senior official in Ukraine. Though he did not claim responsibility for the most recent drone strike in his Sunday address, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine was moving the war back into Russian territory. As attacks against Russia have increased, Russian feelings of security, high during the early months of the war entirely in Ukraine, have lessened. However, the drone attacks against Russia have not been as impactful as those Russia fires against Ukraine, which have often targeted civilian-heavy areas.

Winning streak 'keeps the fire going', says Verstappen
  + stars: | 2023-07-31 | by ( Alan Baldwin | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
Since those musings at a race won by Mexican team mate Sergio Perez, Verstappen has won every grand prix to go 125 points clear at the top -- the equivalent of five victories -- and take his career tally to 45 wins. Soon to be a triple world champion, Verstappen has a contract to the end of 2028 -- by which time who knows how many wins and titles he will have. If I have to rock up and I have no chance of winning then the fire starts to go away," the Dutch driver said at Spa-Francorchamps. Retired four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel is the only driver to have won nine in a row in a single season, with Red Bull in 2013. Red Bull have yet to end a season with their drivers one-two in the standings and Perez's task is to make sure he finishes runner-up this time.

Multiple sea drone attack carried out on Russian assets in Crimea and the Black Sea have grabbed recent headlines, with dramatic videos posted online. These sea drones are targeting the Russians in the Black Sea. “The speed of these drones exceeds any sea craft in the Black Sea region at the moment.”The speed and difficulties in detection may go some way to explaining how the drones that attacked the bridge traveled undetected in the dark across the Black Sea to the bridge. Especially since the Admiral Makarov was newly installed as the Black Sea flagship after the Moskva was famously sunk by Ukrainian forces in April 2022. Russia claimed it was responding to an area it says was housing sea drones.

The FBI watched J. Robert Oppenheimer for months after he helped make the WWII-ending atomic bomb. Reports from the FBI show Oppenheimer was accused of Communism and spreading information to Russia. During the investigation, though, Pitzer said he had new doubts about Oppenheimer's loyalty to the country, due to his initial reservations about the development of the H-bomb. The Atomic Heritage Foundation does consider Oppenheimer likely to have held communist sympathies, but maintains that information in the report was exaggerated. At the end of the inquest, Oppenheimer's top-level security clearances were revoked, a devastating blow to the scientist.

When the White House refused it, citing high maintenance costs, Donald Trump purchased the estate. The 20-acre Mar-a-Lago property, meaning "Sea to Lake" in Spanish, is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and Lake Worth. While in office, he referred to the estate as the "Winter White House." Former White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham alleges Trump casually presented some of the documents to guests of the estate. Tuesday, Judge Aileen Cannon, a Trump nominee, will preside over Trump's first pretrial hearing for the case.

The superseding indictment against Trump included a new defendant, Carlos De Oliveira. De Oliveira is the property manager at Mar-a-Lago, and helped move boxes to obscure evidence. What did the special counsel Jack Smith's office charge him with, in the new superseding indictment? Lewis Strauss oversaw J. Robert Oppenheimer as chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission. Strauss used Oppenheimer's communist sympathies to begin stripping his security clearances. However, Strauss was the first to take serious action about Oppenheimer's Communist accusations. The film reenacts another instance when Strauss feels Oppenheimer slighted him — as Oppenheimer and Albert Einstein, played by Tom Conti, speak by a pond after Strauss offers Oppenheimer a prestigious job at the Institute for Advanced Study. Strauss also began a separate security proceeding with the AEC over Oppenheimer's alleged Communist ties, which resulted in his security clearances being suspended.

CNN —Ukraine’s Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov says that Ukraine will continue carrying out attacks on Russian-occupied Crimea and the Kerch Bridge that connects it to the Russian mainland, while also admitting that Ukraine’s plan for its sluggish counteroffensive is behind schedule. As Russia has pummeled the southern port city of Odesa and the surrounding region over the past week, Ukraine has continued to carry out strikes inside Crimea. On Tuesday, Ukrainian drones hit an ammunition depot, just a week after seaborne drones struck the Kerch bridge. If Ukrainian forces can successfully puncture Moscow’s sizeable defense lines along Ukraine Sea of Azov coastline that links Crimea to Donbas, Reznikov said it would be “a good result” for Kyiv. Ukraine has gained “real combat experience – how to deter Russians, to defeat them, to beat them with using NATO standard weaponry,” he added.
