Instacart, DoorDash, and other apps seem to be trying to roll back Seattle's new gig worker pay law. They say Seattle gig workers are making less and delivering fewer orders after many raised prices. But in the preamble to the survey, Instacart indicated it already had thoughts about how things were going. One poster, who included screenshots of the message, encouraged other Instacart shoppers to turn the pre-written letter to the city council around. Uber Eats and Grubhub have also put out statements saying that things have gotten worse for their gig workers since Seattle's law took effect.

Shares of Globe Life rebounded about 20% Friday morning after sinking 53% Thursday following a short-seller report alleging multiple instances of insurance fraud. Fuzzy Panda Research disclosed a short position in the Texas-based insurance company after it uncovered "extensive allegations of insurance fraud ignored by management despite being obvious and reported hundreds of times." The short-seller claims that Globe Life had insurance policies written for fictitious and deceased individuals, forged signatures and had funds withdrawn from bank accounts without customer approval. They also allege that fictitious bank accounts were used to fund fake insurance policies so employees met their bonuses. In a statement Thursday, Globe Life refuted the allegations and said they are "driven solely by short-term profit."

Investors had lately been hoping the Fed might start easing back on policy starting in June, with three rate cuts penciled in for the year. But a robust labor market, as reflected in last week's March payrolls, and this latest consumer inflation data have pushed back that view. Markets now anticipate the first cut might come in September, with just two quarter-point reductions for the whole year. Even so, investors anticipate that markets may be able to take fewer rate cuts in stride so long as the Fed isn't actually forced to raise rates. Varghese still leans toward equities, expecting as many as three rate cuts this year, though he anticipates the first cut might not come until July now.

Donald Trump said the Arizona state Supreme Court went to far in its abortion ruling. As you know it's all about state's rights. AdvertisementIn a 4-2 ruling, the conservative Arizona court ruled that an 1864 near-complete ban on abortions, enacted before Arizona was even a state, could be enforced. Trump is far from alone in his struggle to reconcile his states' rights view with the political implications of rulings that restrict abortion access. Abortion rights groups were already trying to get a ballot initiative approved for this November which would put the question of abortion access before Arizonans.

The result of the court's 2022 decision has been a patchwork of anti-abortion laws in GOP-leaning states, while blue states have largely become havens for abortion rights. Biden's support for abortion rights is already well-established, but Trump in recent months has sought to soften his position on the issue. Despite the pro-Trump push on abortion, Kennedy Jr.'s position on reproductive rights hasn't been as clear as Biden's stance. In a February interview with The Washington Post following a controversial Alabama IVF court ruling, Kennedy Jr. said he felt that women "have the right to choose" regarding abortion. When Kennedy Jr. was asked what he'd do to shore up reproductive rights as president, he told The Post: "I don't know, you tell me.

The Arizona Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that a 160-year-old near-total abortion ban still on the books in the state is enforceable, a bombshell decision that adds the state to the growing lists of places where abortion care is effectively banned. The ruling allows an 1864 law in Arizona to stand that criminalized abortion by making it a felony punishable by two to five years in prison for anyone who performs or helps a woman obtain one. The law — which was codified again in 1901, and once again in 1913, after Arizona became a state — included an exception to save the woman's life. The decision — which could shutter abortion clinics in the state — effectively undoes a lower court's ruling that stated that a more recent 15-week ban from March 2022 superseded the 1864 law. "Absent the federal constitutional abortion right, and because" the 2022 law does not independently authorize abortion, there is no provision in federal or state law prohibiting" the 1864 ban.

A New York appeals court judge on Monday swiftly rejected a last-ditch bid by Donald Trump to delay his upcoming criminal hush money trial while he seeks to move the case to another court. Trump has frequently targeted both groups in the run-up to the Manhattan Supreme Court trial, which is set to begin jury selection next week. At a hearing Monday afternoon, defense attorney Emil Bove urged appellate Judge Lizbeth Gonzalez to delay the hush money trial, according to NBC. Wu added that Trump, who regularly rails against the case on social media and the campaign trail, is responsible for the media frenzy. He cannot drum up a media circus and then use that publicity to seek a change of trial venue, Wu told Gonzalez.
