She’s won gold in the 800 three times and gold in the 1,500 twice – and hasn’t been defeated in those races in any of the Olympics that she’s entered. The Australians medaled in all four medal races on Saturday to the Americans’ three. But in the last race of the night, the American men’s 4X100 freestyle team took back the momentum by winning Team USA’s first gold of the Olympics. It had been 12 years since the French won a medal in swimming. Dressel has won gold in every Olympic event he’s entered so far in his career.

Airports and airlines say they can handle both. U.S. airlines expect to transport 271 million passengers worldwide this summer, up 6.3% from last season, the Airlines for America trade group has projected. Peter Steffen / picture alliance via Getty ImageThe U.S. Department of Transportation tracks “extreme weather” delays caused by conditions like tornadoes, blizzards or hurricanes but not those due to heat. During extreme heat, the airport urges employees to stay hydrated, take frequent breaks and, if they’re working outdoors, to cool off inside every hour. “Passengers are also encouraged to use the airport’s water stations to stay hydrated in the Arizona heat,” he added.

The Israeli military said on Sunday morning that it had conducted overnight strikes in Lebanon, hours after a rocket fired from its northern neighbor killed at least 12 people in an Israeli-controlled town. Israel blamed Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed Lebanese group that has been attacking Israel in solidarity with Gaza, for Saturday’s deadly rocket attack. The Israeli strikes appeared to stop short of a major escalation, amid fears that the rocket launch would prompt all-out war. Still, there were strong expectations on Sunday morning that Israel still might mount a bigger response. For months, as Israel has fought Hamas in Gaza, it has also been trading fire with Hezbollah.

Senior officials from Israel, Egypt, Qatar and the United States met in Rome on Sunday to continue negotiations over a cease-fire in Gaza, according to three officials involved in or briefed on the talks and a statement from the Israeli government. The talks came as tensions mounted in the region amid growing violence along the border between Israel and Lebanon. Qatar hosts part of the Hamas leadership and, along with Egypt, plays a key role in mediating between the two sides. The statement did not give further details. Despite progress in recent weeks, the monthslong negotiations remain stalled over several key issues, particularly the extent to which Israeli forces would remain in Gaza during a truce, according to seven officials involved in or briefed on the talks.

Opinion | Toxic Families: Is Breaking Away the Answer?

The purpose of therapy is to understand and resolve the many ways the parent relationship affected someone — and to understand the complicated person the parent is and why they may have acted in a way that created such pain. Part of healthy maturity and resilience is to be able to manage complicated relationships and not see people as either good or bad, but some mix. So much is embedded in the unconscious that without looking at oneself, rather than just blaming the other person, the child is more likely to repeat unhealthy patterns going forward. To the Editor:Encouraging family cutoffs, as described in this article, has been practiced by some therapists for a long time, even though it’s getting more attention now. It reflects a growing culture of hyper-individualism in which family bonds become disposable when they involve personal pain.

It’s just a decisive move toward America First on foreign policy.”Trump’s selection of Vance is one of the clearest barometers of the former president’s tightening hold over the GOP. Those included Christian conservatives, the business community, congressional insiders and traditional Republican foreign policy hawks shaped by Ronald Reagan’s vision of the US as the muscular leader of the free world. Instead, with Vance, Trump chose an acolyte and potential successor who could deepen and extend the direction the former president has set for the party. Vance has been most unequivocal in criticizing the internationalist approach to foreign policy centered on robust alliances. With the selection of Vance, Trump has broadcast his belief that he has conclusively won the internal GOP debate over all aspects of US interactions with the world – foreign policy, immigration and trade.

The worst may be over for homebuyers

But there are now signs that maybe, just maybe, the worst could be over for homebuyers. “June, in particular, has started to show the housing market slowing down in favor of buyers,” said Skylar Olsen, Zillow’s chief economist. While the Fed doesn’t directly set mortgage rates, its actions do influence borrowing costs throughout the economy. For the past two years, potential homebuyers have faced a double whammy of high prices and high mortgage rates. “We’re sitting today at probably, if not the worst affordability ever, really close to the worst affordability ever — so we almost have nowhere to go but up,” Sharga said.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel is unlikely to immediately change his approach to the Gaza war following President Biden’s decision to stand aside, even if he may privately welcome the president’s departure from the race, analysts said. Mr. Netanyahu would most likely have freer rein in Gaza under a potential new Trump administration, but the prime minister must still work with Mr. Biden for the next six months, leaving him with little immediate room for maneuver, they said. Until January, Mr. Biden will control the delivery of U.S. munitions to Israel, as well as the level of U.S. diplomatic support at the United Nations at a time when global scrutiny of Israel has rarely been higher. “Of course, Netanyahu benefits from a politically weak Biden, who is blamed by the Israeli right for restraining Israel,” said Mazal Mualem, an Israeli political commentator and a biographer of Mr. Netanyahu. “But Biden is still president and Netanyahu needs him,” she said.

CNN —Four days after a faulty software update from a cybersecurity company unexpectedly brought down computers and technical systems across the world, airlines and some other companies are still experiencing delays and other technical problems. The outage was related to a software update rolled out by CrowdStrike, a major US cybersecurity firm. The issue is specific to Falcon, one of CrowdStrike’s main software products, and is not impacting Mac or Linux operating systems, according to the advisory. US-based carriers American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Allegiant Airlines, SunCountry and Frontier Airlines all reported issues on Friday. More than 1,200 Delta flights were canceled on Sunday, after the carrier canceled 1,208 flights on Saturday, according to FlightAware.

For nine months, Israel and Hezbollah, an Iran-backed militia that dominates southern Lebanon, have fought a low-level conflict that has edged closer to an all-out war. An ally of Hamas, Hezbollah has said it will stop firing rockets if Israel halts its war with Hamas in Gaza. If that happens, both Israel and Hezbollah have signaled to interlocutors that they would be prepared to begin negotiations for a formal truce, according to three Western officials briefed on the sides’ positions and an Israeli official. The officials all spoke on the condition of anonymity in order to speak more freely. Those negotiations would focus on the withdrawal of Hezbollah fighters from the southernmost areas of Lebanon and the deployment of more soldiers from Lebanon’s official military, according to the officials.

Houthi Drone Strike Highlights Dilemmas for Israel
  + stars: | 2024-07-20 | by ( Patrick Kingsley | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Israel faces a strategic dilemma over how best to retaliate for the drone attack on Tel Aviv claimed by Yemen’s Houthi militia, which is based thousands of miles from Israel’s southern borders. The attack, which struck an apartment building early on Friday near the United States diplomatic compound, killing one person and wounded several others, has heightened concerns in Israel about the threat of Iran. Tehran funds and encourages militias opposed to Israel throughout the region, including Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, in addition to the Houthis in Yemen. According to military experts, those factors make it harder for drones to be tracked by radar and intercepted by surface-to-air missiles. Yoav Gallant, the Israeli defense minister, has vowed revenge for the attack, but analysts said this weekend that Israel had few obvious options against a militia that shares no common border with Israel and has appeared undeterred by earlier displays of force by Western powers.

The Voting Machine Conspiracy Theorists Are Still at It
  + stars: | 2024-07-20 | by ( Alan Feuer | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Nearly four years later, zealous supporters of former President Donald J. Trump who promoted the conspiracy theory that Dominion Voting Systems had rigged its machines to rob him of the 2020 election are still at it. Even though Dominion has aggressively defended itself in court, a network of pro-Trump activists has continued to push false claims against the company, often by seeking to use information gleaned from the very defamation lawsuits the firm has filed against them. The network includes wealthy business executives like Patrick Byrne, who once ran Overstock.com, and Mike Lindell, the founder of the bedding company MyPillow. Both have sought without credible evidence to put Dominion at the heart of a vast conspiracy to deny Mr. Trump a victory. It also includes a pro-Trump sheriff from southwest Michigan, a former election official from Colorado and Mr. Byrne’s own lawyer, who is facing charges of tampering with Dominion machines and who once worked alongside Mr. Trump’s legal team in claiming that the company was part of a plot to subvert the last election.
