☆ Oil heads for weekly gain as Middle East tensions keep traders on edge

Oil prices rose on Friday and are on track for a weekly gain of more than 1%, as tensions in the world's top oil-producing region, the Middle East, and a restart in Gaza ceasefire talks in the coming days kept traders on edge. Both benchmarks settled down 58 cents a barrel in the previous session after prices fluctuated against expectations of heightened or reduced tensions in the Middle East. Oil traders are waiting for Israel's response to a missile attack by Iran on Oct. 1 that may involve hitting Tehran's oil infrastructure and disrupt supplies, although reports said Israel would strike Iranian military, not nuclear or oil, targets. U.S. and Israeli officials are set to restart talks for a ceasefire and the release of hostages in Gaza in the coming days. Ceasefire talks have a small net negative impact on oil prices, Sycamore said, adding the focus is more on the conflict in Lebanon and Israel's potential response to Iran.

Analysts at Itau BBA, the largest investment bank in Latin America, said investors should short Apple and Amazon before their quarterly financial results are released on Oct. 31. Investors also often use options contracts to take a short position on a stock to limit losses or amplify returns. However, Itau analysts said Apple's shares have "been performing well in a not-so-strong environment" and pointed to its elevated valuation levels. Apple stock now trades at 31 times price-to-next year's earnings, compared to the stock's five-year average of 26 times, according to FactSet. Asia-Pacific markets were mixed on Friday, with investors awaiting Japan's general election over the weekend. Japan also released its October inflation numbers for the capital city of Tokyo on Friday, its last key economic data before the election. Tokyo's inflation is widely considered a leading indicator of nationwide trends. The city's headline inflation rate fell to 1.8% in October from 2.2% the month before, with core inflation — which strips out prices of fresh food — also coming in at 1.8%, down from 2%. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast the core inflation rate in Tokyo to slow to 1.7% in October.

Two co-owners of a Colorado funeral home where around 190 decomposing bodies were found last year pleaded guilty Thursday to federal fraud charges, officials said. Some of the remains found were of people who died in 2019, four years earlier, the U.S. Attorney's Office said. The Hallfords also admitted to Covid relief fraud of around $800,000, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said. The funeral home where the remains were found was later demolished, NBC affiliate KUSA of Denver reported at the time. Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said Thursday he will seek resentencing for Lyle and Erik Menendez in their parents' murders, paving the way for their potential release from prison after decades. Robert Roberson, 57, was set to become the first person in the U.S. executed in a "shaken baby" case until members of the state House Criminal Jurisprudence Committee issued a subpoena to have him testify at a legislative hearing this week. Outside groups have poured an astounding $1.1 billion into the presidential race with less than two weeks to go before Election Day, an NBC News analysis found, surpassing the record set during the 2020 election. To put the current level of outside spending into perspective, the $1 billion-plus figure dwarfs the gross domestic product of more than a dozen nations. Outside groups have spent $464 million in support of her and more than $393 million in opposition. By comparison, Trump has benefited from $75 million of outside spending supporting him, while facing $124 million in outside spending against him. Add that to the more than $1 billion in independent expenditures, and the price tag of the presidential campaign reaches $2 billion.

And among young voters who say they will vote in the presidential election in November, Harris leads 56%-36%, a 20-point advantage. Young women said they’ll vote for Harris over Trump by a 33-point margin. The gender differences splashed across the issues young voters say are most important to their vote. Roughly a third of young voters said they’ll pay attention to endorsements by political leaders (38%) and organizations to which they belong (31%). One-third of young voters have a positive view of Trump’s VP pick, JD Vance, and 45% have a negative view of him.

A San Francisco man has sued Alaska Airlines alleging negligence led to the death of his beloved 3-year-old French bulldog after he was asked to move from first-class to coach on a flight from New York to San Francisco. The lawsuit, filed Oct. 16 in San Francisco County Superior Court against Alaska Airlines, alleges breach of contract, negligence, negligent hiring and supervision, negligent infliction of emotional distress, and seeks punitive damages to be determined at trial. However, shortly before take off, “an Alaska Airlines flight attendant and another unknown male employee of Alaska Airlines asked the Plaintiff and his father to move to aisle 11 of the Plane for safety purposes,” the complaint said. Alaska Airlines employees should have known the requirements needed to avoid that happening,” the filing claimed. NBC News has reached out to Alaska Airlines and attorneys for Contillo for comment.
