Gold slides on brewing concerns of U.S. rate cuts still far off

Gold bars and gold coins of different sizes lie in a safe on a table at the precious metal dealer Pro Aurum. Spot gold was down 0.1% at $2,024.99 per ounce, after rising as much as 0.8% before the data. The dollar index extended gains after data showed U.S. consumer prices rose more than expected in December, which could delay a much anticipated U.S. rate cut in March. Traders see a 67% probability of a rate cut in March, according to the CME FedWatch tool, compared with about a 71% chance seen before the report. (Reuters) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Thursday classified the recall of certain respiratory masks made by ResMed as most serious as their use could cause major injuries or death. ResMed was recalling some models of its continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) masks, AirFit and AirTouch, due to possible magnetic interference with certain medical devices and implants which might disrupt their function or position and cause serious harm or death, the FDA said. The FDA said ResMed was recalling these masks to update the labels and add more warnings and information. The California-based medical device maker started the recall process on Nov. 20 and has recalled over 20 million devices in the United States. The health regulator said there has been six reported injuries and no reports of death due to the devices.

Elon Musk's social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, announced it will launch peer-to-peer payments this year, according to a Tuesday blog post. X said the payments will unlock "more user utility and opportunities for commerce" as the platform works to "revolutionize 2024." The blog post did not offer specific details about how the payments will work or when they will officially launch. According to the Nationwide Multistate Licensing System website, X Payments LLC — the payment subsidiary of X — has only obtained money transmission licenses in 14 states so far. Introducing peer-to-peer commerce to the platform would mark the latest sweeping change at X since Musk acquired the company for $44 billion in late 2022.

Shares of Tinder owner Match jumped as much as 12% during Tuesday morning trading after The Wall Street Journal reported that Elliott Management, the activist investing firm behind campaigns at Salesforce and Pinterest , had built a roughly $1 billion stake in the online dating company. The company had a market cap of $10 billion at the close Monday, but that pales in comparison to its more than $45 billion market cap in 2021. Elliott is expected to engage with Match management, the Journal reported citing people familiar with the matter, but it was not clear if that engagement would include nominating its own directors. But the company reported a continued tumble in so-called Tinder payers in November when it reported third-quarter earnings. A spokesperson for Elliott Management was not immediately available for comment.

Fidelity fund again trims Elon Musk’s X valuation
  + stars: | 2024-01-02 | by ( Brian Fung | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +1 min
The latest disclosure by a Fidelity mutual fund reflects a long-running trend that has steadily reduced X’s estimated value over the past year amid successive crises at the company, many of which have been driven by owner Elon Musk. The filing said its shares in X represent less than .01% of the total value of the fund, which it said is more than $49 billion. Fidelity did slightly increase its estimated value of X multiple times last summer, around when Linda Yaccarino became X’s CEO. Since then, however, Fidelity has continued to cut the estimated value of its X shares. With X being privately held, Fidelity’s estimates have emerged as a closely watched indicator of X’s health and a reflection of the attitudes of Musk’s own investors.
