Read previewThis as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Jorge Reyes , a 27-year-old professional from Bogotá, Colombia, who moved to Finland less than a year ago. Finland was the opposite of my hometown in Bogotá, Colombia, and completely unlike my Caribbean background, where 40 degrees Celsius, beaches, and sunshine are the norm. I saw on social media that Finland was ranked one of the happiest countries in the world. Ironically, Colombia was up there on this list, but I felt I needed to experience Finland for myself. I'm sure smaller cities within Finland might not be as receptive to foreigners as the bigger cities, but they're becoming increasingly inclusive.

Here are four unpopular rules rich people follow that most others don't:1. The problem with this mindset is that it can make people very competitive with other folks in similar financial situations. A rich person has no problem, for example, socking away money in a retirement account. But they know that just because they can't spend that money now, it's not like it has disappeared. It's actually the opposite: the longer they wait, the more money they get later on.

One of the biggest wood-framed projects under way in Florida began construction this year on the water near Tampa Bay. Photo: Deborah Acosta/The Wall Street JournalDevelopers in Florida are rolling out new homes built with wooden frames, undaunted by the risk that wood can be less reliable than other materials for withstanding hurricane-force winds. Homes with wooden frames are cheaper and faster to build than those framed in concrete, one reason why wood-frame construction is the norm in much of the U.S.

Childfree workers told Business Insider they often feel pressured to cover for parents at work. Benson's not alone in experiencing the tension of splitting work between childfree workers and those with kids. For childfree workers, it may lead to resentment, or feeling like their time isn't as valuable. And that might, in turn, lead to childfree workers being asked to take on more. But the childfree workers, parents, and experts that Business Insider spoke with say that making it a worker-to-worker dispute takes the onus off of companies and policy.

The October jobs report — with the economy adding just 150,000 jobs and the unemployment rate ticking up to 3.9% — was a disappointment. Of particular notice, the unemployment rate has increased by half a percentage point over the past six months. A simple way to show that things are still in balance is to look at Okun's law, a relationship between movements in the unemployment rate and economic activity. The historical record shows that once it rises half a percentage point, the unemployment rate tends to rise even more. The unemployment rate is already above the Fed's year-end forecast of 3.8% — the first time that's happened since March 2022.

In some circles, it is heretical to maintain that women and men are biologically different, largely because such differences have in the past been manipulated toward misogynist ends. Ms. Bohannon believes that “while the majority of scientists still effectively ignore the female body, there’s a quiet revolution in the science of womanhood brewing.”

Despite what the Hallmark Channel tells us at this time of year, fairy-tale endings don’t always stick. Brian Smith and Jackie Cuscuna, the Brooklyn couple who founded Ample Hills Creamery, have been fired by the same investors who came to the rescue of the popular ice cream brand in June. Mr. Smith said in an interview that he and Ms. Cuscuna had lost everything. The nine nations had announced in December that Vietnam would receive $15.5 billion in grants and loans in exchange for a commitment to renewable energy. Ms. Nhien, 48, never got the chance to see Vietnam present the plan. While two activists have since been released, the United Nations high commissioner for human rights said in September that the “prosecutions and the arbitrary application of restrictive legislation are having a chilling effect” on environmentalists in Vietnam. Activists and academics say that Vietnam appears to be emboldened by its growing importance to the West and has taken the opportunity to clamp down, knowing there will be few repercussions. President Biden visited Vietnam in September, elevating ties to a new strategic relationship that he said would “be a force for prosperity and security in one of the most consequential regions in the world.”

NBA Stars, Fix Your Free Throws With One Easy Trick
  + stars: | 2023-11-27 | by ( Robert O Connell | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
Over the last generation of NBA basketball, players have reimagined nearly every method of scoring points. Top dunkers have evolved from lumbering behemoths to athletes who can sprint the length of the floor in a few strides. The exception is the free throw, stuck more or less where it’s always been. Even the league’s worst shooters, with rare exceptions, settle for the norm after they draw a foul. They tinker instead of overhauling, trying for higher arc and a more consistent release, logging the same lousy numbers.
