Travelers reported a nearly three-fold jump in third-quarter profit on Thursday, as higher underwriting gains and investment income more than offset steep catastrophe losses. Travelers' net written premiums rose 8% in the quarter from a year earlier, as all its units grew, the company said. Underwriting gains climbed to $685 million compared with a loss of $136 million a year earlier, while net investment income rose nearly 18%, thanks to strong fixed income returns and growth in fixed maturity investments. The euphoria has also spread to other asset classes, bolstering gains across investment portfolios. Travelers' underlying combined ratio improved to 85.6%, compared with 90.6% a year earlier.

An army of political propaganda accounts powered by artificial intelligence posed as real people on X to argue in favor of Republican candidates and causes, according to a research report out of Clemson University. The network identified by the Clemson researchers included at least 686 identified X accounts that have posted more than 130,000 times since January. Many of the accounts were removed from X after NBC News emailed the platform for comment. In Arizona’s Republican congressional primary, the accounts supported Blake Masters over Abraham Hamadeh. A search on X for that hashtag shows only one other tweet, from 2018, has used it.

London CNN —For consumers still scarred by jumps in their energy bills in recent years, the International Energy Agency has good news: Oil and natural gas prices will probably be lower over the next five years. Energy prices soared in the wake of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, which followed a rise in global demand as economies reopened after Covid lockdowns put lives on hold. And that “would move us into a very different energy world from the one we have experienced in recent years during the global energy crisis,” he added in a statement accompanying the IEA’s latest World Energy Outlook report. But global oil output has been increasing, thanks mostly to producers in the United States and other countries in the Americas. CNN —Delta Air Lines is debuting a new look this fall, with sleek new cabin interiors on its narrowbody Boeing 757 aircraft that will eventually be applied across the carrier’s fleet.
