The Internet Archive, a nonprofit digital library that has served as a main repository of internet history, is back online with limited functionality after weeks of being harassed by hackers. “Safe to resume but might need further maintenance, in which case it will be suspended again. The California-based Archive has run the Wayback Machine, devoted to preserving the internet as a historical and cultural artifact, since 1996. Starting on Tuesday, the Archive came under repeated DDoS attacks and was briefly replaced with a taunting message from the hackers. “We never really know the true motivation behind most attacks until much later, if at all.”

Positioning in financial stocks is light relative to other sectors, Morgan Stanley says. AdvertisementInvestors are lingering in defensive trades that don't take advantage of the economy's strength, Morgan Stanley said, highlighting opportunities in underinvested sectors. The firm — which just last week upgraded cyclical stocks to "overweight" relative to defensives — described the financials group as particularly attractive. Morgan Stanley said net exposure to financials was in the bottom 15th percentile of a historical data series that goes back to 2010. Morgan Stanley noted that this weakness lowered earnings-season expectations for investors, making it easier for major lenders to outperform forecasts.

European stocks are heading for a mixed start to the week Monday, with regional markets lacking direction after a choppy week last week. The region's major indexes closed higher on Friday as investors assessed U.K. growth figures and looked ahead to a fiscal stimulus announcement by China over the weekend. China's Minister of Finance Lan Fo'an in a press briefing on Saturday hinted at more debt issuance amid efforts to shore up the economy, stating the government had a "rather large" space to increase deficit. Asia-Pacific markets were mixed on Monday and China stocks volatile as investors assessed the weekend press briefing. Meanwhile, U.S. stock futures were little changed in overnight trading Sunday as investors waited to assess whether the next batch of key corporate earnings could power the market to more records; Bank of America, Goldman Sachs and Johnson & Johnson report their latest results on Tuesday before the market opens, while Morgan Stanley and United Airlines are set to release results Wednesday.

Nurphoto | Nurphoto | Getty ImagesBEIJING — China's Ministry of Finance press briefing over the weekend underscored how it is focused on tackling local government debt problems, instead of the stimulus markets have been waiting for. In his opening remarks on Saturday, Minister of Finance Lan Fo'an laid out four measures, starting with increasing support for local governments in resolving debt risks. China's real estate market slump has cut into a significant source of revenue for local governments, many of which struggled financially even before needing to spend on Covid-19 measures. He added that a large plan to address local governments' hidden debt would be announced in the near future, without specifying when. Historically, local governments were responsible for more than 85% of expenditure but only received about 60% of tax revenue, Rhodium Group said in 2021.

Apple stock jumped Monday after a Wall Street firm touted the iPhone maker ahead of its quarterly earnings report. Analysts said Apple's stock may be able to advance higher on a late October earnings report that merely matches Wall Street estimates, so investors should be positioned accordingly. However, we do agree with Evercore's optimism on AI iPhone integration, and its ability to usher in an upgrade cycle for Apple's flagship device. But with our "own it, don't trade it" view still intact on Apple stock, it's acceptable for the upgrade cycle to get off to a slower start. "I'm for the elongated [upgrade] cycle," Jim Cramer said on Monday.

How to counter a low-ball salary offer
  + stars: | 2024-10-14 | by ( Morgan Smith | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +3 min
It's no secret that hiring managers often keep their cards close to their chest during a salary negotiation. Of course, there's always a chance a salary offer falls farther than $10,000 away from your expectations. A low-ball salary offer doesn't always mean a lost cause. "The person you're talking to isn't always the person who decides whether or not you get that higher salary, they're often the person who has to go make the case to someone else," she adds. Candidates who can articulate how the timing of their start date benefits the company's goals have the "best chances" of landing a higher salary, Tolbert adds.

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Monday reviewed quarterly reports from two of the biggest names in the financial sector, JPMorgan and Wells Fargo . He said he was excited by both banks' performance and suggested their success means earnings season will bring more positive news. "While these quarters were certainly good news for JP Morgan and Wells Fargo, I think they're also good omens for earnings season and the market overall," he said. Like JPMorgan, Wells Fargo beat Wall Street's expectations last week. "Rather than getting bogged down in the details, it's better to focus on the positive overall picture, which is exactly what happened on Friday.
