Mexico City Associated Press —Claudia Sheinbaum will take the oath of office Tuesday as Mexico’s first female president in more than 200 years of independence, promising to protect an expanded social safety net and fight for the poor like her predecessor, but facing pressing problems. Sheinbaum romped to victory in June with nearly 60% of the vote, propelled largely by the sustained popularity of her political mentor, former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. “So, where López Obrador was charismatic, Claudia Sheinbaum will have to be effective.”He is not leaving her an easy situation. Things with its northern neighbor were already tense after López Obrador said he was putting relations with the US embassy “on pause” after public criticism of the proposed judicial overhaul. López Obrador built a massive new oil refinery and poured money into the state-owned oil company.

A look back in history shows how a key group of transportation stocks performed the last time there was a major port strike, according to Wolfe Research. Against that backdrop, Scott Group, a senior analyst covering freight transportation at Wolfe, looked at transportation stocks in 2002, the last time there was a major port strike in the U.S. That strike, which lasted just 11 days and affected only West Coast ports, hurt transportation stocks throughout the protest, he said. But those same stocks staged a major comeback in the month after the strike ended. Here are how some key stocks performed during and after the last major strike. Disputes across the country are brewing over the role of local election boards and how much power they have to question – or even throw out – election results. In Georgia, for instance, Trump-backed members of the state election board recently passed controversial rules that could allow local election boards responsible for certifying results to conduct investigations that threaten to delay certification. One of the Georgia rules, the “Reasonable Inquiry Rule,” would allow election officials to conduct a “reasonable inquiry” before certifying election results. The petitioners in the case argue that the rule would give partisan board members a wide ability to cast doubt on, or even reject, election results. In some cases, the threat of legal action has been enough to deter officials from pursuing challenges to the certification process.

WASHINGTON, Sept 30 — Stellantis said Monday it is recalling 194,000 plug-in hybrid electric Jeep SUVs to address fire risks after 13 fires were reported, and it told owners to park outside and away from other vehicles until recall repairs are completed. The Italian-American automaker is recalling some 2020 through 2024 model year Jeep Wrangler and 2022 through 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee plug-in hybrids. The Chrysler-parent company said the fires occurred when the vehicles were parked and turned off. The recall includes 154,000 vehicles in the United States, 14,000 in Canada, 700 in Mexico and nearly 26,000 outside North America. The company said the recall was prompted by a routine company review of customer data that led to an internal investigation.

Shortly after announcing North American tour dates, the band said it will not be participating in dynamic pricing. Dynamic pricing occurs when a ticket seller adjusts the cost of a ticket in real time based on live demand. The band's announcement comes after the U.K. government scrutinized Ticketmaster and its dynamic pricing model in relation to the sale of Oasis concert tickets. Some music fans feel that fandom and devotion should be considered when granting ticket sale access. Oasis said in a news release that it plans to take the tour to "other continents outside of Europe and North America later next year."

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration said Monday it is making asylum restrictions at the southern border even tougher, as it’s increasingly eager to show voters uneasy over immigration that it is taking a hard stance on border security. The new rules, which toughen restrictions announced in June, bar migrants from being granted asylum when U.S. officials deem that the southern border is overwhelmed. But the administration has touted its asylum restrictions, saying they have led to serious drops in the number of migrants coming to the southern border. A senior administration official said Monday that the longer timeline was necessary to make sure that drops in immigration are sustained and not due to a one-time event. “It’s absolutely reasonable to want robust systems in place to know who is coming into our country, and certainly, the surges we’ve seen at the southern border have been unsustainable,” she said.

Hannah Gutierrez-Reed will remain behind bars, according to a decision filed by the judge overseeing the “Rust” movie armorer's case on Monday. Judge Sommer ruled that Reed’s conviction still holds even though the judge previously determined that the prosecution suppressed evidence in the involuntary manslaughter case against “Rust” star and producer Alec Baldwin. For this reason, Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer dismissed Baldwin's case, saying New Mexico prosecutors failed to disclose the evidence — a violation of the Brady Law. The sanction of dismissal is the only warranted remedy,” Sommer said of her decision at the time. Morrissey has since asked the judge to reconsider dismissing the case against Baldwin.

Former President Donald Trump is finally gearing up for an all-out sprint in his bid to reclaim the White House. For Trump, the frequent campaigning is not without challenges, with both candidates receiving unprecedented levels of security after the two attempts to assassinate Trump. Looking ahead to the final month before Election Day, the Trump campaign anticipates two to three rallies per week, a couple of smaller policy-focused events, retail stops at local stores and town halls hosted by campaign surrogates, a Trump campaign official familiar with the planning said. “Nobody in the game of politics works harder than President Trump especially in the fourth quarter,” Trump campaign national press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement to NBC News. “President Trump and Senator Vance will continue to outpace Harris and Walz in the media, and bring their winning message to make America wealthy, safe, and strong again to voters across the country.”

The Harris campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Trump's remarks on Sunday. Permian Resources is primed for strong gains ahead, according to Goldman Sachs. Analyst Neil Mehta initiated coverage on the energy company with a buy rating and 12-month price target of $19, which suggests about 40.6% upside. This year, the stock has lost roughly 1% this year and about 16.7% this quarter amid a rough quarter for the broader energy sector. Permian Resources produces oil and natural gas primarily from the Permian Basin, which is the highest-producing oilfield in the U.S. located in West Texas and southern New Mexico. "We are recommending PR as the stock carries several fundamental elements that position it to outperform peers," Mehta said in a Sunday note to clients.

CNN —A New Mexico judge on Monday denied “Rust” armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed’s request for new trial and upheld her involuntary manslaughter conviction for the 2021 death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Gutierrez Reed, who as armorer was in charge of firearms on the movie set, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in March. Her defense attorney argued she was scapegoated for the safety failures of film set management and other crew members. Baldwin was also charged with involuntary manslaughter and had pleaded not guilty. Assistant film director David Halls took a plea deal in 2023 for his role in the shooting.

While overall inflation has slowed, insurance costs are taking a bigger bite out of many household budgets. Car insurance premiums have also shot up. Bankrate estimates that in September the average cost for full coverage car insurance is $2,348 a year. Extreme weather events, higher replacement and repair costs, and increased medical expenses after accidents have boosted car insurance rates, experts say. Car insurance discounts range from safe driver and good student discounts to taking a defensive driving course.
