The couple fell in love with the second property they viewed — an abandoned farm set on three acres of land. The couple — who were living and traveling around in a van at that time — bought the farm for 95,000 euros, or about $103,000. The Newbys have been documenting every step of their Portuguese farm renovation on their YouTube channel.

With outstretched arms, dancers skimmed across the sand like gliding birds, soundless against the pressing wind and somehow soaring without actual wings. Surveying the shoreline of Rockaway Beach on a recent morning, Patricia Lent, from the Merce Cunningham Trust, was elated. “This is a dream come true,” she said, adding: “It’s someone else’s dream — but it is a dream come true.”Cunningham’s “Beach Birds” has finally made its way to the beach. An adaptation of this 1991 dance is part of this year’s Beach Sessions Dance Series, at Rockaway Beach on Saturday. Staged by Lent and Rashaun Mitchell — both former company members and trustees — “Beach Birds” comes to life in a setting where the sand, the sea and real birds create, along with 11 dancers, a humming summer landscape.

CNN —A large red cargo ship named Pyxis Ocean set out on its maiden voyage this month. The ship, chartered by US shipping firm Cargill, has been retrofitted with two WindWings – large steel sails 37.5 meters (123 foot) tall, designed by UK company BAR Technologies and produced by industrialization partner Yara Marine Technologies. Huge kites and rotor technologies have been tried on cargo ships in attempts to reduce their dependence on diesel. Now the news agency is the first to detail how Mexican drug gangs have harnessed legitimate remittance networks to repatriate their U.S. drug profits, and the factors that make this activity so difficult for authorities to detect and thwart. But authorities say Mexican drug cartels are piggybacking on this legal network to repatriate earnings from U.S. narcotics sales. A Reuters search of Mexican court records dating back to 2012 turned up no cases involving money laundering through remittances. Still, prosecutors in those cases mentioned several of those firms in court documents because they said the defendants had used their platforms to wire drug money. His office did not respond to requests for comment about law enforcement allegations that Mexican cartels are using remittances to launder drug money.

The drill is the latest in a flurry of Chinese activity in the Middle East, traditionally seen as the US’ backyard. According to the Wall Street Journal, the US wants Saudi Arabia to distance itself economically and militarily from Beijing in return. Four of the top 10 importers of US arms are Gulf Arab states: Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and the UAE. Some of these purchases were driven by US restrictions on selling arms to Gulf states under the Biden administration, according to Alhasan.

Yes, Weschler explores Irwin’s early years with the California Abstract Expressionist school, and his move into spatial experimentation. SUN HOUSE, by David James DuncanAt least give David James Duncan credit for an eclectic and well-nourished sensibility: Not every writer would quote Walt Whitman and Fran Lebowitz in consecutive sentences. His ambitious new novel, “Sun House,” takes its title from an imagined nomadic tribe’s name for Earth, but Duncan is surely alluding to the real-life Delta bluesman Son House, whom one of the characters recalls seeing in performance. In this multiperspective epic about an “unintentional menagerie” of seekers and strivers in a Montana valley, Duncan name-checks John Cheever and Frank Zappa, Anne Carson and Glenda Jackson, Teilhard de Chardin and Jabba the Hutt, as well as Eastern and Western mystics from Gandhi to Catherine of Siena. Gary Snyder makes a cameo appearance, we hear Willie Nelson and Emmylou Harris sing a song of Duncan’s invention, and a Border collie named Romeo plays the fool — literally — in a production of “King Lear.”A similar high-low range of reference once enriched the wry and witty fictions of Donald Barthelme, but Duncan is bereft of Barthelme’s worldly sense of irony — for him, no bereavement at all. In a chapter titled “On Irony (Yeah, Right),” one character ventriloquizes what seems to be Duncan’s own aesthetic credo: “My bottom line in art, as in life, is to serve that irony-proof idiot the human heart.”In “Sun House,” idiocy is theodicy, holy foolery transcends the “thinky” intellect, and “dumbsaint notebook” entries, scrawled by a student of Sanskrit, muse on “Unseen Unborn Guileless Perfection” and “a nothingness out of which compassion, empathy & generosity flow & flow.” Such “mind-stopping paradoxes” are Buddhism 101, but if given enough of them — and we’re given far more than enough of them — an agnostic might convert to heartless rationalism out of sheer annoyance.

In an interview on Aug. 2, Mr. Williams said that inflation was coming down as hoped, and that while he expected unemployment to rise slightly as the economy cooled, by how much was unclear. The upshot is that interest rates are unlikely to rise much further than the current range of 5.25 to 5.5 percent. Fed officials could also consider cutting them soon: Mr. Williams did not rule out the possibility of lowering rates in early 2024, depending on economic data. His comments are a sign that moderating inflation could pave the way for a shift in policy approach. I wonder if there is anything that is on your mind that you want to talk about?

The central bank has lifted its policy interest rate to a range of 5.25 to 5.5 percent — the highest level in 22 years — which has trickled out to increase borrowing costs across the economy. The goal is to deter demand and force sellers to stop raising prices so much, slowing inflation. But nearly a year and a half into the effort, the Fed is at or near the end of its rate increases. The economy is approaching a pivot point, one that has many consumers wondering when rates will come back down, how quickly and how much. “Eventually monetary policy will need over the next few years to get back to a more normal — whatever that normal is — a more normal setting of policy,” Mr. Williams said.

Fictionalized shows drawn from real life don’t always satisfy the people depicted. But when the subjects are superstars accustomed to speaking for themselves, their criticism can take on a life of its own. That’s what happened after the first season of HBO’s “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty,” which returns for a second season on Sunday. But many of the people portrayed in Season 1 objected loudly to the way they and others were depicted — Magic Johnson (Quincy Isaiah), Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (Solomon Hughes) and Coach Jerry West (Jason Clarke) among them. West even demanded an apology from HBO (and his character does seem more muted in the coming season).
