Starbucks is parting ways with its CEO and bringing in the head of Chipotle to lead the coffeeshop chain, as it seeks to revive flagging sales and appease outside investors. Starbucks announced Tuesday that Brian Niccol, who has led the Mexican-style chain since 2018, will take over the coffee giant starting next month. Laxman Narasimhan, who'd been with Starbucks for less than two years, is exiting the company. But in its release announcing the change, Starbucks said Niccol had "transformed" Chipotle. Starbucks CFO Rachel Ruggeri will step in as interim chief executive until Sept. 9, when Niccol officially takes over the top job.

Chipotle stock fell as much as 10% in premarket trading Tuesday as the company announced CEO Brian Niccol would be leaving his role on Aug. 31 to become CEO of Starbucks . Niccol began as Chipotle CEO in March 2018. Chipotle stock has risen more than 700% since since he took over. Niccol helped lead Chipotle through a foodborne illness scandal and oversaw the chain of restaurants during the pandemic. Before taking over at Chipotle, Niccol was the CEO at Yum Brands' Taco Bell.

Starbucks announced Tuesday it's replacing CEO Laxman Narasimhan with Chipotle CEO Brian Niccol as the coffee chain tries to reverse a sales slump. Before joining Starbucks, Narasimhan was chief executive of Reckitt, which owns brands like Lysol and Mucinex. Narasimhan's surprise ouster also suggests that Starbucks' board isn't interested in a deal with activist investors. When news of Elliott's stake in Starbucks first broke in July, the hedge fund offered Starbucks' board a settlement that would protect Narasimhan's job, CNBC previously reported. Starbucks' board did not initially respond or engage with Elliott for some time, driven in part by the lingering influence of Schultz.

Saving Australian Crocodiles by Yucking Their Yum

Researchers in Australia believe being a bit nauseous could help save crocodiles from a poisonous pest. That’s why ecologists recently set traps baited with toad carcasses in gorges where freshwater crocodiles like to hunt. Instead of the deadly toxins the toads usually carry, these had been injected with a nauseating chemical. The results of the experiment, published Wednesday in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B, reveal that these tainted toads may save crocodile lives by changing their eating habits. Even top predators like freshwater crocodiles are susceptible to a deadly dose of toad.

PARIS — Jordan Chiles is a rarity in Olympic history: an athlete forced to return their medal for reasons other than a doping violation. On Sunday, the International Olympic Committee said that the appeal shouldn’t have been allowed, meaning she will have to return her third-place prize. In 2017, the Russian Olympic Committee said that none of the 18 athletes stripped of their medals because of doping violations had returned the physical awards. After Chiles’ bronze bumped Romanian gymnast Ana Bărbosu off the podium, the country’s Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said he’d refuse to attend the closing ceremony in protest. “Given these circumstances, we are committed to pursuing an appeal to help Jordan Chiles receive the recognition she deserves,” the U.S. committee said.

They immediately ran into a problem finding a candidate to oppose the incumbent. There were only 16 practicing lawyers in the three counties that make up the deep-red district, including the present Democratic office-holder, Randy Reynolds, who some said was not an effective prosecutor. Desperate for a challenger, they turned to Sarah Stogner, an oil-and-gas lawyer who, on paper, would seem to be an unlikely candidate to boost the Republican Party in what ought to have been one of its strongholds. She has never tried a criminal case. And she’s made her mark in Texas oil law mainly for suing Chevron over environmental damage from abandoned oil wells.

Whether it's the Moët champagne poured to celebrate a win or the custom trunks that Louis Vuitton has made for medal ceremonies, luxury has been on full display at the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games. To Carly Duguid, the creative director for tennis and fashion star Naomi Osaka, luxury fashion and athletics are the perfect combination. Osaka was the first athlete to partner with Louis Vuitton, whose roster now includes Victor Wembanyama, Carlos Alcaraz, and many French Olympians and Paralympians. That includes the Jan. 6 and 2020 election interference case brought by special counsel Jack Smith. If Harris wins the election in November, Trump’s Jan. 6 case — though weakened by the Supreme Court — will continue to move toward trial. She is also likely to avoid much discussion of Trump’s handling of classified documents: While a Trump-appointed federal judge dismissed a federal case involving his alleged mishandling of classified documents, the Justice Department has appealed and the case could ultimately survive. While those rules are binding only on the Justice Department, part of Harris’ pitch to voters is that she would respect the lines between the Justice Department and the White House that have existed for decades, since the Watergate scandal. During the Biden administration, the Justice Department appointed another special counsel, a former Trump appointee, who secured the conviction of Biden’s son Hunter Biden on gun charges.

Urban warfare in Gaza has revealed a painful truth for NATO: Many of its armies are ill-prepared for fighting in crowded cities. There is good reason for concern: urban warfare has become a fixture of warfare on a rapidly urbanizing planet, from Fallujah in 2003 to Bakhmut in 2023. Israeli troops and their vehicles have faced challenges operating in sections of Gaza that the Israeli Air Force shattered. The biggest lesson of Gaza is the importance of firepower in urban warfare, according to RUSI. Brazilian investigators on Saturday began analyzing the black boxes from a São Paulo-bound flight to try to understand why the passenger plane fell from 17,000 feet on Friday, in a crash that killed all 62 on board. But to aviation experts around the world who watched the videos showing the 89-foot plane spinning slowly as it plummeted before crashing almost directly on its belly, the question of what had happened was simple to answer: The plane had stalled. In other words, the plane’s wings had lost the lift needed to keep the aircraft aloft, causing it to stop flying and start falling. “You can’t get into a spin without stalling,” said John Cox, an airline pilot for 25 years who now aids plane crash investigations. “It’s A plus B equals C.”

Google unnerved Silicon Valley last week when it agreed to pay $2.5 billion to license Character.AI's technology, hire its two superstar cofounders and 20 percent of employees. The deal came after AI developers Adept and Inflection both effectively sold themselves to Amazon and Microsoft, respectively, in recent months. It was only last year Character.AI raised $150 million in venture funding, which valued the company at $850 million. Its appeal as a chatbot that uses AI to make virtual characters that interact with users seems decidedly niche. WASHINGTON — U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan on Friday approved a request from special counsel Jack Smith to allow for more time to propose the next steps in the government's election interference case against former President Donald Trump. The special counsel's office said in its filing Thursday that prosecutors are still assessing the "new precedent set forth" in the Trump immunity decision by the Supreme Court. Smith asked Chutkan to give them and Trump's lawyers until Aug. 30 to submit the joint status report and to schedule the status conference after that. The appeals process made certain that the trial would not happen before Election Day on Nov. 5. For now, here's what we know — and what we don't know — about stem-cell therapy for knees. Bryan Johnson flew to the Bahamas to get MSC stem cells injected into his knees, hips, and shoulders — for about $16,500 per joint. Plus, even Sampson warns that young donor stem cells should not be seen as a quick fix or a panacea. Done with proper medical oversight, some studies have found no adverse effects from stem-cell treatments for various conditions. Botched stem-cell treatments can cause infection, blindness, and excessive cell growth, which can trigger the formation of tumors.
