The federal minimum wage, which has been stuck at $7.25 an hour for 15 years. Given the situation, here's an idea: Why not raise the federal minimum wage right now? Getting anything done legislatively is always a challenge, especially in an election year, but polls indicate a higher minimum wage is broadly popular. AdvertisementOnce the minimum wage gets so high that it starts to cause a bunch of job loss, that's a problem. If a higher minimum wage lifts millions of people out of poverty, that's incredible.

Homeownership in the largest U.S. cities has been put further out of reach for all but the richest residents, according to a recent analysis by mortgage analytics firm HSH. A household needs to earn $463,887 to afford a median-priced home in San Jose, California, making it the most expensive of the 50 largest U.S. cities. The estimate assumes no more than 28% of gross income spent on housing costs and a down payment of 20%, plus an average mortgage rate of 7.16% for borrowers with a good or excellent credit score. A longstanding shortage of homes is another factor that's particularly acute in California, which helps explain why median home prices in some of the state's cities, such as San Jose, are twice the national median of $412,300, per U.S. Census data. Here's a look at the 15 most expensive cities to afford a home, based on the income needed to buy a median-priced property in that market.

According to public announcements, the firm has made four acquisition deals so far in 2024, exactly even with Nvidia's 2020 deal total. Nvidia declined to discuss its acquisition strategy for this report, citing a quiet period before it announces earnings on August 28. In May, Nvidia agreed to acquire Deci AI, another Israeli startup that makes tools for developers to build AI models, for $300 million. In July Nvidia competitor AMD announced an agreement to acquire Silo AI, a Finnish AI startup, for $655 million. And this quiet trickle of deals in various forms is unlikely to stop since the market for AI talent is so tight.

EV fast chargers – the big tall units that look like major appliances – aren’t generally designed to completely fill an EV’s batteries. A line of EVs wait to charge at Electrify America chargers in East Brunswick, New Jersey, on July 6. At 10 of the busiest EV fast charging stations in California, Electrify America has enacted a strict limit. There can also be other legitimate reasons a driver may want to charge to 100% at a fast charger, said Barrosa. Cases like these are why Electrify America probably won’t institute an overall charging cap at charging stations near major highways, he said.

The Summary Many young climate advocates see Kamala Harris as stronger on environmental issues than Joe Biden. President Joe Biden may have passed the United States’ most significant climate legislation ever, but many young environmental activists say they see Kamala Harris as stronger on the issue. But several young climate activists ages 16 to 29 said for them, the expansion of the fossil fuel industry during Biden’s presidency has clouded those successes. Harris’ young supporters have highlighted the settlements she secured as California attorney general with Chevron, BP and ConocoPhillips over their handling of hazardous materials. Sunrise Movement protesters gather near Vice President Harris' Brentwood home on April 14, calling on her to urge President Biden to declare a climate emergency.
