Mikalsen knows this process intimately because in addition to being a worried mom, she works in health care. Seattle Children’s Hospital says it is seeing double the number patients they would normally see in October. The Illinois Department of Health alerted hospital systems in the state that they are running out of pediatric intensive care beds. “That’s actually an optimistic number,” says Dr. Deanna Behrens, a pediatric critical care specialist at a children’s hospital in Chicago. With hospital beds in short supply, Mattie McKoy waited weeks for scans he needed.
A global helium shortage has doctors worried about one of the natural gas’s most essential, and perhaps unexpected, uses: MRIs. Now, four of five major U.S. helium suppliers are rationing the element, said Phil Kornbluth, president of Kornbluth Helium Consulting. That’s where helium comes in: With a boiling point of minus 452 degrees Fahrenheit, liquid helium is the coldest element on Earth. “Without helium, MRIs would have to shut down.”Manufacturers like GE Healthcare and Siemens Healthineers recognize this vulnerability. As doctors dread possible worst-case scenarios, scientists who use liquid helium for research are already there.
Scholars discovered the oldest known star map beneath the text of a Christian manuscript, according to new study. The ancient Greek astronomer made the earliest known attempt to chart the entire night sky. The Christian text came from Egypt's Saint Catherine's Monastery and is now in possession of the Museum of the Bible in Washington, DC. Researchers say the star map was scraped away so the parchment could be reused — a common practice at the time. The "new evidence is the most authoritative to date and allows major progress in the reconstruction of Hipparchus' Star Catalog," the study authors wrote.

Ulm-based NVision uses quantum tech to enable MRI scanners to analyse tumors at tissue level. The startup has partnered with Siemens to use its medical-imaging technology for cancer treatments. It secured a $17 million grant from the German government using this 18-slide pitch deck. Currently, MRI scanners can only conduct imaging at an anatomical level. "We know that with cancer, tumors have different metabolisms, and this is how they keep themselves alive," said CEO Sella Brosh.
Like many stay-at-home moms I know, I work a side hustle that brings in income. But for most SAHMs, our paid work goes unacknowledged since it's not our family's main source of cash. Stay-at-home moms are known for cooking, cleaning, caring for kids, and an endless stream of other minutiae we call "homemaking." Thankfully, my family's financial well-being doesn't depend on my income; it depends on my husband's steady, 9-5 corporate finance gig. SAHMs contribute to their family's financial welfare by eliminating numerous household expenses through uncompensated labor.
CNN —The experimental Alzheimer’s drug lecanemab made big news last week when the companies testing it released trial results that showed the drug met its goals, making it one of the first dementia drugs to return positive results. By some counts, lecanemab is the 16th drug that’s been developed to clear toxic amyloid plaques from the brain. Or did the companies that are testing it – Biogen and Eisai – run a smarter clinical trial that finally showcased the potential of these kinds of medications? Clinical trial results were mixed, with only one showing a small benefit to patients. He says he might change his mind if analysis of the clinical trial shows that one group of people got more of a benefit than others.
After seeing her listing on the front page of Airbnb search results, other hosts in the area reached out for advice. Now, she runs an operation with six assistants that oversees 60 properties nationwide, from condos in Myrtle Beach to fishing cabins in Colorado. This strategy will only ultimately frustrate guests, Mosher said. In addition to bad reviews, hosts with an over-capacity space are increasing liability for their space and the wear and tear on their furniture. For example, instead of "Thanks for your message," Mosher sends guests: "Thank you for the fantastic communication, safe travels and happy adventures."
The UK's MOD said the number of fleeing Russians likely exceeds Putin's original invasion force. "Whilst exact numbers are unclear, it likely exceeds the size of the total invasion force Russia fielded in February 2022." According to the Associated Press, as of Wednesday at least 194,000 Russians have fled to Georgia, Kazakhstan and Finland alone. Those conservative estimates already exceed what the US had estimated to be the 190,000-strong invasion force that massed at Ukraine's border just prior to the invasion. The UK's MOD noted on Thursday that "the better off and well educated are over-represented amongst those attempting to leave Russia."
Jim Koch founded the Boston Beer Company, the maker of Samuel Adams, in 1984. The bottle is a Samuel Adams, a mainstay on shelves alongside American beer brands like Budweiser and Miller. The Boston Beer Company, which he founded in 1984, now owns Angry Orchard, Truly Hard Seltzer, and Twisted Tea. The billionaire founder and brewmaster said the strategies that made him successful 38 years ago are the same ones that continue to improve Samuel Adams beer today. "In my mind, there is a perfect Sam Adams Boston Lager.
Shares of Biogen and Eisai were halted, but shares of Eli Lilly & Co , which is also developing an Alzheimer's drug, were up 6.7% in after hours trade. Aduhelm was the first new Alzheimer's drug approved in 20 years after a long list of high-profile failures for the industry. Symptomatic brain swelling was seen in 2.8% of those in the lecanemab group and none of the placebo group, they said. Aduhelm's approval was a rare bright spot for Alzheimer's patients, but critics have called for more evidence that amyloid-targeting drugs are worth the cost. Other plaque-targeting antibodies in late-stage development for Alzheimer's patients include Roche Holding AG's (ROG.S) gantenerumab and Eli Lilly's donanemab.
NEW YORK — When an undersea volcano erupted in Tonga in January, its watery blast was huge and unusual — and scientists are still trying to understand its impacts. “This was a once-in-a-lifetime event,” said lead author Holger Voemel, a scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Colorado. And since water vapor acts as a heat-trapping greenhouse gas, the eruption will probably raise temperatures instead of lowering them, Toohey said. The water vapor will stick around the upper atmosphere for a few years before making its way into the lower atmosphere, Toohey said. The stratosphere stretches from around 7.5 miles to 31 miles above Earth and is usually very dry, Voemel explained.
ALLEGHENY NATIONAL FOREST— Amy Bue set out after nightfall armed with a thermal-imaging camera and two-way radio. The English teacher from Youngstown, Ohio, was hoping to finally get a clear look at Bigfoot. In dense woods northeast of Pittsburgh, she hiked with a group that included a civil engineer, a wildlife filmmaker and a Zumba teacher. In the darkness they whooped, made loud knocks and let out a long, mournful cry known as the Ohio howl. Then they sat silent for a reply.
Significant strides in cancer treatments, diagnostic tools and prevention strategies continue to drive down cancer death rates, according to a report published Wednesday by the American Association for Cancer Research. Death rates from cancer have been falling over the past two decades, particularly sharply in recent years, the group's annual Cancer Progress Report found. “Cancer cells are mavericks, but they are your own cells. Coussens also highlighted developments in cancer drugs that work by targeting specific DNA mutations in cancer cells but noted that more work is still needed. Catching cancer earlyAlso key to cutting cancer death rates is catching the disease as early as possible.
CNN —More people are surviving cancer than ever before in the United States, according to a new report from the American Association for Cancer Research. The report notes that there were only 3 million US cancer survivors in 1971. Declines in smoking and improvements in catching and treating cancer early are driving the change, according to the AACR Cancer Progress Report 2022, released Wednesday. The reversal of Roe v. Wade is also expected to affect cancer care by limiting health care options for pregnant women with cancer, the report said. The Covid-19 pandemic had an effect on cancer in the US, with nearly 10 million breast, colorectal and prostate cancer screenings missed in 2020.
PARIS — Planet is adding another type of imagery satellite to its product line, the latest expansion of the company's data-gathering operations. The company named the new satellites Tanager -- named after a bird family, like the existing lines of Dove and Pelican satellites that it manufactures. Tanager satellites will collect 420 bands of spectrum, Schingler said, noting that detecting methane requires detecting just four bands. The company is building the Tanager satellites with the same spacecraft bus – which is the main body of a satellite – as its Pelican line, to leverage Planet's vertical approach to manufacturing. The first two Tanager demonstration satellites are set to launch in 2023.

KYIV, Aug 18 (Reuters) - A well-known Ukrainian TV host has crowdfunded a gift to help Ukraine's armed forces beat back Russia's invasion: usage rights to a radar satellite that can see through clouds. TV star Serhiy Prytula and Finnish satellite company ICEYE OY confirmed the deal in separate statements on Thursday. "The contract signed with the Serhiy Prytula Charity Foundation will initially provide the Government of Ukraine with the full capabilities for one of ICEYE's satellites already in orbit," the company said. "In addition, ICEYE will provide access to its constellation of SAR satellites, allowing the Ukrainian Armed Forces to receive radar satellite imagery on critical locations with a high revisit frequency," it said on its website. As yet another Alzheimer's drug targeting plaque buildup in the brain fails to improve cognition in patients, leading scientists said a significant shift is underway in the search for effective treatments for the disease. By 2050, that number is projected to rise to nearly 13 million, according to an estimate from the Alzheimer’s Association. Alzheimer’s disease is often referred to as “Type 3 diabetes,” a brain-specific form of diabetes that is the result of the brain’s neurons lacking glucose, said John Didsbury, the CEO of T3D Therapeutics. Data from the longest-ever phase 3 trial of exercise on cognition released at the conference on Tuesday found that exercise may stall cognitive decline in Alzheimer’s patients. He said it’s only a matter of time before we see more research discoveries that show potential for slowing Alzheimer’s disease, possibly within the next year or two.
"What bigger problem is there to solve for our generation than climate change?" Not only is climate change an existential-level threat to humanity, it is especially dangerous for the poorest communities around the world. "Eventually, it just got to the point where I couldn't justify to myself why I'm still doing something that isn't climate," Kirpichov told CNBC. "It turns out that there are just so many people who are in the same boat," Kirpichov told CNBC. We know Southeast Asia is going to get hit really hard with climate change.
Ashley Johnson, chief financial officer for Planet Labs PBC, said the satellite-imaging company made the right call to go public by combining with a special-purpose acquisition company—better known as a SPAC. WSJ’s CFO Journal talked to Ms. Johnson about Planet Labs’ past year as a public company, investing and finding efficiencies as the economy slows. It’s unfortunate that a lot of companies that shouldn’t have gone public did go public using that vehicle.
Researchers created a microscope slide that can detect cancer by simply "viewing" cells. It's not limited to cancer cells, so could also be used to detect other diseases. Cancer cells tend to interact with light in a different way from healthy cells. Cancer cells tend to interact with light in a different way from healthy cells. In contrast, the NanoMslide can manipulate light at the nanoscale, causing cells to "light up" with vivid and contrasting colors.
Created in 2017, "Homia" is a memory and recognition game card game where players race to build their Nigerian home to win. "Wan wan touch" is a football-based board game. But in Nigeria, there is hardly any data about the tabletop game industry. There is also no access to tabletop games cafes and other value chains surrounding these games," he explains. People can come there to play," he says, with 60 Nigerian-made board games and another 300 non-Nigerian games.
