The hearing focused in on nursing home deaths and a controversial March 2020 directive from the New York State Department of Health on hospital discharges and nursing home admissions. “You own this,” Republican Rep. Brad Wenstrup of Ohio, chairman of the subcommittee, told Cuomo at the outset of the hearing. The former governor has defended his handling of the pandemic, saying that the state followed federal guidelines. New York State Attorney General Letitia James issued a report in 2021 finding that the New York State Department of Health undercounted Covid-19 deaths among nursing home residents by approximately 50%. The New York health department undercounted the number of Covid-19 deaths in nursing homes by thousands during Cuomo’s time in office, an audit conducted by state officials found in 2022.

Median household income rose to $80,610 in 2023, essentially the same as it was in 2019, the Census Bureau reported Tuesday. The typical household’s income rose 4% from 2022, driven primarily by an increase in workers’ earnings. There were widespread gains across the income ladder, though income inequality did not change significantly between 2022 and 2023. Changes in the poverty rateThe official poverty measure fell to 11.1% in 2023, down 0.4 percentage points from the year before. The supplemental poverty measure has been closely watched in recent years because it showed the impact of many federal Covid-19 pandemic relief programs.

“Teens need our support now more than ever.”Significant socioemotional development occurs during adolescence, along with substantial changes to brain structure and function. The researchers originally intended to track ordinary adolescent brain development over time, starting with MRIs the authors conducted on participants’ brains in 2018. The study revealed accelerated cortical thinning in the post-pandemic brains of teens — occurring in 30 brain regions across both hemispheres and all lobes for girls, and in only two regions for boys. The prevalence of the thinning amounted to 43% and 6% of the studied brain regions for girls and boys, respectively. The regions affected in boys’ brains are involved in processing objects in the visual field as well as faces.

Billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates has spent the past couple decades warning the general public about ominous issues, from upcoming "climate disasters" to devastating cyberattacks. "A lot of unrest" in today's world could spark "a major war," he tells CNBC Make It. And even "if we avoid a big war ... then, yes, there will be another pandemic, most likely in the next 25 years." "The country that the world expected to lead and be the model fell short of those expectations," Gates says, referring to the United States. While some progress has been made, with increased spending on pandemic preparedness in the U.S. and elsewhere, Gates says the global response hasn't yet been enough.

The hedge fund "agreed that any room for avoiding a total divestment from China and the South China Sea was now completely lost, and market re-entry was probably many years away." The hedge fund responded by choosing to invest heavily in semiconductors manufactured in regions not affected by the war. The European Union has successfully avoided the "terrible prophecies" that threatened its economy in recent years, but must still contend with Russia's war in Ukraine and a tenuous trade relationship with China, outgoing European Commissioner for Economy Paolo Gentiloni said Saturday. A former prime minister of Italy, Gentiloni has served as the European Commissioner for Economy under EC President Ursula von der Leyen since December 2019. Gentiloni will not be returning for a second term as commissioner following Von der Leyen's tumultuous re-election as president — but he has laid out the economic picture that awaits his imminent successor. Economists were expecting a net gain of 160,000 jobs and for the unemployment rate to fall to 4.2%, according to FactSet consensus estimates. With inflation pretty much tamed and moderating as expected, the Federal Reserve has turned its focus to the labor market (the other part of its dual mandate). Job growth has been slowing, but there were indications that the labor market was weakening under the weight of 23-year-high interest rates. A ‘place of stability’July’s shockingly weak jobs report stoked fears that the jobs market was collapsing, potentially taking the economy into a downturn. And while a rate cut is coming, the jury is still out on the exact size of that move.

China halts foreign adoptions of its children

BEIJING — The Chinese government is no longer allowing foreign adoptions of the country’s children, a spokesperson said Thursday. The only exception will be for blood relatives adopting a child or a stepchild, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning said. Many foreigners have adopted children from China over the decades, visiting the country to pick them up and then bringing them to a new home overseas. China suspended international adoptions during the COVID-19 pandemic. The government later resumed adoptions for children who had received travel authorization before the suspension in 2020, the U.S. State Department said in its latest annual report on adoptions.
