REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Aug 18 (Reuters) - A swift sell-off in technology stocks and surge in Treasury yields are punishing Cathie Wood's flagship ARK Innovation ETF (ARKK.P), leaving the closely followed fund down more than 20% for the month of August. Much of the gains for the year came as inflation concerns ebbed and longer-duration Treasury yields subsided. Yet signs of strength in the U.S. economy have helped push 10-year Treasury yields up nearly 30 basis points this month to 10-month highs and within inches of their highest levels since 2007. Higher yields often weigh heavily on technology stocks by decreasing the value of their future profit. August has been particularly challenging for the fund, which has lost ground every trading day but two this month.

London CNN —The price of bitcoin has dropped nearly 9% since early Thursday as part of a broader sell-off of risky assets. According to CoinGlass, a cryptocurrency trading platform, $1 billion has been drained from cryptocurrencies over the past 24 hours — with bitcoin accounting for nearly half of that loss. The report sparked “a panicked reaction in the crypto market,” Hani Abuagla, senior market analyst at online broker XTB, said in a Friday note. Tesla (TSLA) also dumped a big chunk of its own bitcoin holdings last year. The crypto market has faced pressure from US regulators in recent months.

Even as family offices explode in size and number, they're increasingly prone to "group think" when it comes to investing, according to Tim Draper, a leader in early-stage venture capital. "There is a little bit of group think that happens in family offices," said Draper, founder of Draper Associates . "One leading family office says 'we're going to do middle market buyouts' and then they all do it. Family offices in recent years have quickly piled into certain asset classes, like private credit, direct deals and secondary private-equity, as they follow larger family offices. Traders work on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City, U.S., July 19, 2023. Wall Street closed sharply lower on Tuesday after solid retail sales growth in July added to uncertainty around the interest rate outlook, with concerns over a possible downgrade of several U.S. lenders by Fitch further denting risk sentiment. Investors are now focused on the Federal Reserve's July 25-26 meeting minutes, due at 1400 ET (1800 GMT), which may indicate how many policymakers feel the U.S. central bank is done raising interest rates. The central bank had raised rates by 25 basis points at the end of the meeting. Coinbase(COIN.O) gained 5.4% as the crypto exchange secured regulatory approval to allow U.S. retail customers to trade crypto futures.

A representation of the cryptocurrency is seen in front of Coinbase logo in this illustration taken, March 4, 2022. The approval was granted by the National Futures Association (NFA), a self-regulatory organization designated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). The NFA approval, which came nearly two years after Coinbase filed its application, could allow the company to expand into a largely untapped market. In July, crypto derivatives trading volumes globally totaled about $1.85 trillion, according to research firm CCData. The latest offerings will be from Coinbase Financial Markets, a unit of Coinbase.

New York CNN —Coinbase has won a crucial regulatory approval that will allow the platform to provide US-based investors access to the crypto derivatives market. The approval comes from the National Futures Association, a self-regulatory body designated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, nearly two years after Coinbase applied to register as a futures merchant. Crypto derivatives make up more than 75% of all global crypto trades, but such products had been off-limits for investors in the United States, in part because of their complexity and high levels of risk. “This is a significant milestone for bringing federal regulatory oversight over the crypto markets,” said Faryar Shirzad, Coinbase’s chief policy officer. “Offering US investors access to secure and regulated crypto futures is key to unlocking growth and enabling broader participation in the cryptoeconomy,” said Andrew Sears, the CEO of Coinbase Financial Markets.

The Stand with Crypto Alliance is America’s first independent advocacy group for the crypto community, Coinbase says. Crypto regulation: Questions of who and howA central sticking point is the question of how crypto tokens should be regulated. The Securities and Exchange Commission, Wall Street’s top cop, contends that most crypto products are investment contracts and therefore fall under its jurisdiction — an argument the crypto industry is fighting. ‘Recess is over’The Stand With Crypto Alliance aims to mobilize “the full force of the decentralized crypto community to tell lawmakers: Recess is over,” Shirzad wrote in a blog post announcing the nonprofit. The Coinbase-backed nonprofit is an outgrowth of Crypto435, an earlier Coinbase campaign to try to organize the crypto community around legislative issues.

REUTERS/Andrew Kelly/File PhotoNEW YORK, Aug 9 (Reuters) - The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission plans to appeal a recent court decision involving Ripple Labs that was a setback for the agency's efforts to oversee cryptocurrency markets. The SEC said an appeal could address legal issues on which there was "substantial ground for differences of opinion." Torres' decision was not a total victory for Ripple, as she found that it violated securities laws by selling XRP to institutional investors. The judge must decide whether to let the SEC appeal her decision, and put the case on hold. Abrdn’s turnaround is a work in progress

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File PhotoLONDON, Aug 8 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Abrdn’s (ABDN.L) machine is firing on two of its three cylinders. The latter two units are growing, but the stock-picking arm – once Abrdn’s core business – needs more attention. The 1.5 billion pound deal, which closed last year, boosted Abrdn’s exposure to the business of managing savings. Since some of that windfall will disappear when rates fall, Bird needs to speed up his turnaround of Abrdn’s core funds business. The 3.9 billion pound company’s turnaround has a long way to go.

Saudi’s swelling fund has scope for foreign binge

LONDON, Aug 7 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Saudi Arabia’s big sovereign wealth fund is getting bigger. The Public Investment Fund’s assets under management swelled to 2.23 trillion riyals ($603 billion) in 2022 from 1.98 trillion riyals the year before. PIF’s international assets, which range from UK soccer club Newcastle United to struggling carmaker Lucid (LCID.O), shrank from 576 to 512 billion riyals. Still, PIF has big ambitions: it hopes to boost its total assets to a whopping 4 trillion riyals by 2025, of which 24% will be international. If so, its foreign assets could yet double to 960 billion riyals, according to Breakingviews calculations, making it a key player in global finance.

Adobe's Figma deal faces EU competition investigation
  + stars: | 2023-08-07 | by ( Foo Yun Chee | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/IllustrationBRUSSELS, Aug 7 (Reuters) - Adobe's (ADBE.O) $20 billion bid for cloud-based designer platform Figma could reduce competition in global markets for interactive product design tools and also shut out rivals, EU antitrust regulators said on Monday. The European Commission said it opened a full-scale investigation into the deal after a preliminary review triggered concerns, confirming a Reuters story last month. The deal would remove an important rival and could allow Photoshop maker Adobe to restrict competition in the global markets for supply of interactive product design tools, the EU antitrust watchdog said. It said the acquisition could also affect Figma's potential for growth into an effective competitor to Adobe's asset creation tools and effectively reduce competition in interactive product design tools by bundling Figma with Adobe's Creative Cloud suite. The EU competition enforcer said it would decide by Dec. 14 whether to clear or block the deal.
